I’ve always been fascinated with coonhounds since I was a kid. Growing up Where the Red Fern Grows was my favourite book/movie.
Recently found a redbone breeder near me and was wondering what it’s like to own one. I currently own a lab and would be taking the puppy to training once old enough.
The dog would mainly be a family pet, but would be interested in trying to get into scent work and tracking.
Also, I know hounds noses tend to get their noses into trouble. I like taking my lab off leash when possible I use an e-collar to help with his recall. Wondering if anyone here is able to do that with their hound with the proper training.
She is now 10 months old and boy she wants NOTHING to do with us humans. I mean avoids us at all cost unless we are bringing her food or giving her treats. This has been extremely frustrating to say the least. Just curious if tis is going to be here the remainder of her life, maybe just a phase she is going through? or is there anything we can do to combat this? Not looking for 24/7 lap dog but would be nice to atleast get some attention from her.
Three of our six hounds are siblings, and turned six the other day. We got them to cooperate with headgear long enough for some pics, and then got to the pupcups!
Lennie has been an only pup for a couple of years, and now he has a younger brother! They've been playing together and doing great 🥰
I'm trying to teach my 5-year-old Redbone Coonhound/Vizsla mix not to jump. I've done the "turn around" thing when she jumps, the "knee in dog's chest" thing (gently), and holding her down and redirect her to become a "leaner" instead of a jumper.
So what she now does is this: Instead of jumping, she puts her body between my knees, where her butt is in front of me and her head is behind me. Is this position a hound thing? I've never known a dog to do this. This is my first hound. Maybe she's got the leaner thing all wrong and it came out like this, I don't know.
When she does this, I scratch her back around her tail, which she loves, to re-enforce. It's better than jumping.
I adopted her when she was 10 weeks old. She's now almost 6 months old. She does funny things, like she goes "mmmm-rrrow-mmm" in the morning, a soft cooing murmur sound. She makes a funny sound when she yawns. She's very vocal. She also looks up at the sky when a plane goes by... none of my other dogs did that. People tell me that her breed likes to hunt deer and raccoons and such, but so far, she hunts butterflies (chases them)... maybe because she's only 5 months old, or maybe deer aren't her thing. She sits on my feet when I stand by the sink doing dishes. She wants to sleep on MY side of the bed instead of HER side of the bed. Is all this a hound thing?
Fostered this girl for about six weeks. Adopted her on the 14th. I took her on an 8 mile hike yesterday through some pretty tough terrain. When we got home, she slept for 3 1/2 hours, woke up for about 2 hours, and slept through the night until 6:20. I guess I exhausted her!!! But, she loved every minute of it!!!
Love my black and tan coonhound Roger🥹! Wondering how coonhounds do when you bring a baby home? This boys been the center of attention in our home for 5 years now and am worried he will hate our daughter when we bring her home later this year haha. Let me know if you have experience with this!
Welcoming our first official Black & Tan Coonhound to HERO, meet Shine! ✨🐾🤴
Shine was bought to be a hunting dog, but he has no desire to hunt which lead to his owner planning to shoot him 😭, luckily a friend stepped in & offered to help get him into rescue.
Thanks to rescue resources in East TN, Shine was safe, got his vaccines & tested Heartworm Negative 🎉. Tomorrow Shine will be neutered & we will have a better estimate of age, but he is definitely an older gentleman.
Now that he is with HERO fosters getting a taste of the good life, he chooses to spend most of his time in his crate enjoying the comfort of blankets & a cool relaxing house over outside hunting life.
Shine will be available for adoption soon as he gets a clean bill of healthy & we get to see his personality. We have a feeling he is what our vet calls “a good ole hound boy”.
If you are interested in adopting Shine or any of our Hero Hounds please visit our website herohounds.org. Transport can be arranged for approved adopters 🚗💨
Percy aka Deputy Dawg loves watching and waiting for the birds and squirrels.
🆘 On the euthanasia list Friday, 4/17. There will be no extensions per BARC. 🆘
⏰ Pongo must have a HOLD no later than 1PM or he will lose his life. 🥺
🏡 AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION, FOSTER, OR RESCUE
🚗 OUT OF STATE ADOPTION IS POSSIBLE - cost is typically around $600 USD (give or take). The fee includes transport, boarding, full medical, spay/neuter, and a health certificate.

📝 Behavior Notes:
4/15/2026: Walking the row, Pongo was at the front the kennel with a hunch back, low stiff tail, tense body, dilated eyes and forward barking as I was walking pass the kennel.
4/15/2026: Dog greeted me at the front of the kennel, growling and barking with whale eyes, and a tense body. When I went to open the kennel, dog immediately bolted towards the back. I had to use a double leash, due to dog being so far in and low growling. Once leashed, dog was easily walked outside to potty on the leash. Once done dog was taken back inside, and i was able to remove the leash. Dog did go back to growling through the kennel at me when i went to give out enrichment.
4/16/2026: He is in the back of the kennel low growling and he dodges the leash when I go to leash him. I leashed him and he walked on a loose leash slowly behind me. he was flinchy when i would try to pet him at first but after walking him around for a bit he would approach my hand and put his head under it and let me rub his face. He went back into the kennel easily but was vocalizing and doing some growling when I was passing out enrichment.
🚑 Medical Notes:
