Food rotation suggestions

Hello all! My wife and I got a kitten a few weeks ago. Her name is Cheesy Bean (named after the cheesy bean and rice burrito from Taco Bell), and she's a firecracker. First time having an orange.

We have been giving her Hills Science Kitten Wet food and just introduced some IAMS Healthy Kitten Kibble because I liked the idea of the smaller kibble bits. We feed her 2 cans of Hills a day and she free feeds the IAMS and uses the Trixie Cat Puzzle Mat for the kibble as well.

I am wondering if doing wet food rotations would be good too? I don't want her to end up being a picky cat in the future.

This is an issue we are running into our 15 year old senior who has early signs of CKD and refuses to eat anything other than this one particular food, in this one particular flavor.

What would be a good compliment to the Hills? We will probably continue to use Hills wet food as her main food. But would love to keep her on her toe beans so to speak.

Wet food for extremely picky senior cat

My 15 yr old cat used to devour anything in her path. The last 2 months she refuses to eat any wet food I give her, although she wants it. I’ve tried every brand, flavor and texture. The only thing she will eat is fancy feast gems. She is eating dry food.

She’s been to the vet, so no medical or dental issues.

Anyone have experience with this? What did you do? I’m extremely frustrated.

My cats will only eat fancy feast, but lately it keeps making them sick!

I don’t think I’m the only one who has noticed that Fancy Feast’s quality control has gone way downhill. We started throwing out the ones that were clearly bad (smell and texture), got rid of the gravy lovers which seemed to be the worst offender, but I think the sliced and cheese lovers ones still aren’t agreeing with them either, and those are what they like.

Maybe some of it is just normal eating-too-fast, but I’m not thrilled about throwing out one out of every 5 cans either, and it I also wonder if it is just too rich for their elderly kitty bellies. Problem is, I haven’t found a remotely similar replacement. They don’t like the pate (which would be easy to replace), they only like the chunky kinds. Are there any other brands that are similar? Would like to stick to under $2 a serving ideally, but at this point I just want them to eat anything else…

Open Farm wet cat food causing vomiting. Bad batch or just my cats?

Hey everyone, I’m trying to figure out if this is just a coincidence or something I should be concerned about.

My sister-in-law and I both recently started feeding our cats Open Farm wet food, and weirdly, both of our cats have been throwing up after eating it. However she has three other cats and I have one other who does not seem to be affected in the same way and has not thrown up.

So now I’m stuck wondering:

- Could this be a bad batch?

- Is it possible our specific cats just have an allergy or sensitivity to something in it?

- Has anyone else had issues with Open Farm wet food causing vomiting?

- Should I toss the cans to be safe, or would it be okay to donate them since other cats seem unaffected? (I ask about donating because it is close to $250 in food)

For context, neither of our cats had this issue before switching foods, and the vomiting started pretty soon after introducing it. I don’t want to waste it if it’s just our cats being sensitive, but I also don’t want to risk making another cat sick if there’s something wrong with it.

Any advice or similar experiences would really help 🙏

Best cat food for bloody stool and throwing up?

Every vet tells me Purina is the best brand but I kind of doubt it since Friskies makes my cat vomit more, fancy feast helps but then my other cat has really nasty stool from it. I have been to PetSmart and another local pet supply shop but for the life of me I cannot remember what food they recommended. Right now, we have 5 cats so I would like something I can buy in big bags, price does not matter. I also like to do a mix of wet food and dry food for the day, wet in the morning and dry for the rest of the day. Lately I've been buying food from Dollar General and I feel like the cheap food is just not good for their stomachs at all! My older boy just has issues right now and the change in food is making him sick I think, he's due for the vet but I still need a food I can stick with for them.

Any alternatives to Essence Air & Gamefowl dry food?

Hello, as the title above says, I need alternatives as they are discontinuing the dry food. This was one of the few dry cat foods that had no fish on the bag as my cat is allergic to everything from the water. Unfortunately, veterinary food diets all one or more fish related products in it including soy sauce. They also don't like beef or pork either.

Kirkland branded Wet Cat Food

Does anyone feed their cat the Kirkland branded wet cat food from Costco?

If so, can you share your experience? What did you feed your cat previous to switching? Do you think it compares to any other brand?

I consider trying it every time I go, but my cats are picky and I don't know if I'd try flavors and return if they didn't like them (even though I know they'd take the return). I wish I could get a sample, or at least try whatever brand makes their food before purchasing, to see how my cat would react.

Experience with Hills z/d wet and dry food?

My kitty needs to be on this diet for 2 months now to test for chronic gut inflammation and she really likes it and is super excited but turns out to be constantly hungry. She is a rescue and when we got her she had pretty big food anxiety which we got under control with lots of patience and routine. Now with this new food it seems to be back and 100x more. She is usually the sweetest cat, doesn’t do anything wrong and is very well behaved. And now in 24h we got a full switch of her becoming the devil, not sleeping during the day anymore at all, breaking everything in sight and zooming through the apartment without a stop. Also constantly whining for food.. I know that’s cats can be very active and everything but this switch was just with the food.. we are at a loss of what to do but we also really need to give her the diet otherwise we need to do biopsies etc and that’s too much for her and us right now (and might end up needing the diet anyways)

Cat Food Reco

Hi! I need your help po sana 🙏

I have 10 cats (yung oldest is 5 years old), and ever since Royal Canin wet and dry food lang po ang diet nila. Hindi pa po ako nakakapag-try mag-switch to other brands.

Gusto ko lang po sana humingi ng recommendations for more affordable options na pwede ipalit, since I’m currently spending almost ₱30,000 per month (kasama na rin yung cassava litter). Medyo hindi na po siya sustainable for me.

Also, I’ve tried Meowtech litter, pero parang may chemical smell siya after a few days, so hindi rin po siya okay for me.

Hoping po for your suggestions on:

• Dry food

• Wet food

• Litter sand

Thank you so much po 🙏

Experience with Heritage Ranch or other HEB brands? Would it be a good switch form Purina Pro plan?

Hi, I have 2 cats(kittens?) Who are coming up on their birthday in a month and some change. I was advised by the shelter to keep them on kitten food until then. The food they ate there and have been eating since is Purina Pro plan. My question is since they will be upgrading to full-on cat food is there a specific way to choose their new food? Do I stick with the same brand or could I entertain store brands that are offered by my job for instance that are a fair bit cheaper? I'm not sure what to look out for in terms of comparing and needs in a food but don't want to risk compromising on their health a bunch

Currently feeding my cat rawz chicken and liver pate and saw that open farm has a certificate for good source of ingredients is rawz still better than open farm or should I make the swap?

Any alternatives to Bonkers cat treats?

Recently i started buying these and my cat goes WILD for them. She finishes one in less than 3 minutes which is crazy. I wanted to ask if anyone knows any alternatives to these so i can let my cat try out new treats. I have tried actual freeze dried chicken cubes but she doesn't eat them. These lollipops seem like chicken pate that is freeze dried into a heart shape. Does anyone know if there are any similar pate freeze dried treats?

Transitioning from single-protein homemade diet to rotation (cat with small cell lymphoma) — looking for real-world experiences

I’m hoping to learn from others who have experience with homemade diets and protein rotation.

My cat McGee has been on a vet nutritionist formulated homemade cooked diet for a while now:

- ground pork

- pork heart

- pork liver

- Alnutrin with eggshell calcium completer

- Folate

- Nordic Natural fish oil

- Visbiome Vet

We originally went this route because we suspected protein allergies/sensitivities. Since then, he’s had biopsies and was diagnosed with gastric small cell lymphoma, so we now know the issue wasn’t protein-related.

Because of that, I’d really like to move him toward a more varied diet instead of feeding the exact same protein mix every day long-term. (Similar to people, I worry about nutritional gaps with zero variety over time.)

Between chemo, vet visits, ultrasounds, biopsy, and an upcoming dental, I’m trying to avoid the cost of going back to the nutritionist for a full reformulation if I can safely manage this myself.

I’m thinking, keep the same structure and ratios, but rotate proteins.

Example swaps:

- pork → chicken, turkey, beef, etc.

- pork heart → corresponding heart (chicken heart, etc.)

- liver → whatever liver is available

- Continue using the same Alnutrin completer as directed

- Transition slowly (90/10 → 80/20 → 60/40, etc.)

- Eventually rotate proteins batch-to-batch (each batch lasts ~6 days)

Questions for those who’ve done this:

- Have you successfully moved from a single-protein homemade diet to a rotation? How did it go?

- Did you stick to one protein per batch, or mix proteins within batches?

- Any proteins that were easier/harder to introduce?

- Anything you wish you had done differently?

- Any signs I should watch for that a protein isn’t agreeing with them (beyond the obvious GI upset)?

I’m not interested in raw feeding (just a personal choice), so this would stay fully cooked.

I’ll be going slowly and watching him closely, but I’d really value hearing real-world experiences before I start making changes.

Thanks so much in advance — I really appreciate any insight ❤️
