Beautiful “ghost town” of hundreds of abandoned Greek-style stone

Kayaköy is a hauntingly beautiful “ghost town” of hundreds of abandoned Greek-style stone houses, churches, and 1920s-era schools. Formerly known as Levissi, it was abandoned in 1923 during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey and officially deserted after a 1957 earthquake.

Monte Palace Hotel - Sao Miguel, Azores

This is from a trip we took to the Azores in 2022. I’m sure others have posted this as it has become quite the attraction since security has been pulled. However, it was pretty cool to see what once was a bustling, five star hotel, taken over by the elements.

Unfinished, contaminated tunnel in the Italian mountains ☣️

Construction was halted in the 1980s due to geological problems and a partial collapse of the tunnel.

Today, the site is left to its own devices. People frequently use it to secretly burn trash inside, so several burn marks are visible and the smell is clearly noticeable. As you go deeper into the tunnel, the air quality deteriorates noticeably, since the tunnel slopes upward and much of the pollution accumulates in the upper sections.

Another problem is the high concentration of particles in the air, which can be seen in the light of a flashlight. In the rear section, shotcrete containing asbestos was used for stabilization. This results in additional harmful particles in that area. Combined with the residues from the trash fires, the overall environment is quite contaminated.

There are also old fuel drums in the tunnel, some of which are damaged and leaking. At the end, there is a tunnel-boring machine that was left behind and has been sitting there since construction was halted.

It is best not to enter the tunnel without appropriate protective gear.

Southern Travels~

Some of my favorite shots I got from my trip down south recently, didn't get to see as much as I planned due to the bad thunderstorms/tornado warnings on the way home. Enjoy!
