Vietnam Itinerary Sanity Check (HCMC → Ninh Binh → Hanoi)

Hey everyone,

Travelling to Vietnam with one friend starting 16th April and wanted a sanity check on our itinerary. We’re more into exploring, food, culture, and chill experiences than hardcore partying—but we do want one proper fun/drunk night.

Would really appreciate feedback on:

  • Places we should skip
  • Things we should add
  • Better sunset spots
  • Any logistical mistakes
  • And generally if this feels too rushed or just right

🏙️ Days 1–4: Ho Chi Minh City

Day 1 (Chill city exploration)

  • Tan Dinh Church
  • Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Reunification Palace
  • Central Post Office
  • Book Street
  • Opera House (outside)
  • Ben Thanh Market (dinner)
  • Nguyen Hue Walking Street

Day 2 (Heavy + light balance)

  • War Remnants Museum
  • Tao Dan Park
  • Café downtime
  • Bui Vien (just to see, not really party)

Day 3 (Packed day)

  • Cu Chi Tunnels (early)
  • Mekong Delta (Ben Tre / My Tho) same day
  • Back to HCMC by night

Day 4 (Slow day)

  • Fine Arts Museum
  • District 3 walk
  • Long lunch + café
  • Sunset drink (rooftop or river)

👉 Qs:

  • Best rooftop sunset bar in HCMC that isn’t too “party club” vibe?
  • Is Bui Vien worth even a short visit?
  • Better sunset spots less crowded ones.

🌿 Days 5–7: Ninh Binh (Tam Coc base)

Day 5

  • Travel + check-in
  • Bich Dong Pagoda
  • Cycling around Tam Coc
  • Riverside dinner

Day 6

  • Trang An boat ride
  • Hoa Lu
  • Mua Cave (sunset climb?)
  • Chill evening

Day 7

  • Free / rest / buffer day

👉 Qs:

  • Is Trang An + Mua Cave same day doable comfortably?
  • Better sunrise vs sunset: Mua Cave or elsewhere?
  • Should we consider Hang Mua at sunrise instead?

🏛️ Days 8–11: Hanoi

Day 8

  • Travel from Ninh Binh
  • Hoa Lo Prison
  • Women’s Museum
  • St. Joseph’s Cathedral
  • Dinner in Old Quarter

Day 9

  • Ngoc Son Temple + Hoan Kiem Lake
  • Temple of Literature
  • Train Street (via café)
  • Local railway walk

Day 10

  • West Lake
  • Tran Quoc Pagoda
  • Chill final day

Day 11

  • Fly out (11 AM)

👉 Qs:

  • Is Train Street still worth it or too touristy now?
  • Best chill cafés with a view in Hanoi?
  • Where should we do our one proper drinking night — HCMC or Hanoi?

General Questions

  • Any must-try food spots (not super fancy)?
  • Any tourist traps to avoid?
  • Are we missing anything that’s a “wow, don’t skip this”?
  • Any scams or gotchas we should be aware of?

Overall goal:
👉 Not rushing
👉 Good mix of culture + nature + food
👉 One fun night out, rest mostly chill

Appreciate any advice 🙏

Coron to El Nido tour advice

I’m looking to do the Coron to El Nido boat expedition, I have either castaway or buhay isla in mind to go with. I’m 21 and solo travelling but don’t want crazy partying, if anyone has any advice around which one to go with please let me know

Also Buhay Isla does 4D3N whereas Castaway only does 3D2N so I’m not sure which amount of time is best

Ninh Binh transport to Endangered Primate Rescue

Hello! I’m trying to get us from our hotel in Ninh Binh to the endangered primate rescue center. https://www.eprc.asia

What’s the best way to do this? We get to the hotel in the early afternoon and would love to go right after that. I don’t want to do a whole tour or anything. Just get to the center and back. I just emailed the hotel to ask about it but is there a way to just book a driver for this? Google Maps says it’s about a 45-60 minute trip one way and presumably the driver will wait for us to see the place then take us back?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Island Recommendations

Hi - I'm trying to plan a trip for me and my husband for December of this year. We're looking at going anywhere in SE Asia and particularly looking at Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines (but open to any suggestions really). We love beach destinations so I'm specifically looking for islands. Ideally we want beautiful turquoise waters, opportunities to take boat tours, and places that are less touristy. We also love beaches that are more cove like as well. We'd rather not go to the most touristy destinations but somewhere less touched and potentially more preferred by locals :) I've been having a hard time doing research for SE asia because I find more posts telling me where NOT to go rather than where to go.

For reference, some of our favorite islands/beach locations have been Miyakojima, Japan and Milos, Greece.

Ha Giang and Ha Long Recs

Hey, I'm a backpacker in my 30's and going to Vietnam soon, would like to do the 3d2n loop and 2d1n cruise. Any recs?

The loop seems fairly well organised and social if you want it to be, so it doesn't concern me too much. (I'm looking at Mama's and Odyssey).

The cruise on the other end, I'm worried it might be couples galore or a massive groups of 18-22 first time abroad kinda thing.

So I guess what I'm asking is, does anybody know of a very well priced (cheap) cruise that is nice and social and none of the above?

Any help is appreciated.

Would be great of some tours that could perhaps connect the 2, but couldn't find any.

Cambodia visa run

Hello. Im EU Citizen so im eligible for 45 days visa free in vietnam. I did my previous visa run to thailand but right now i decide to do it "quicker" with cambodia border run

My question is: Do i need to fill up cambodian e-visa online if i want to get it on arrival? also can i pretty much just enter cambodia and then goes back to vietnam and i will surely get stamp? I contacted one "company" and they pretty much told me that for this kind of stamp alone i dont even need any help.

Last minute birthday trip to Vietnam with my 8 year old son, I only have 7 days

Traveling from U.S and flying into Ho Chi Minh. Desperately want to get a few custom clothing peices and also do the famous lantern lighting in Hoi An. Traveling by train between the two cities seems like a better use of money so I'd prefer that over flying.

Help me come up with a quick itinerary? What are the must sees/most beautiful spots in and around those two cities!?

First solo trip

Hello everyone. As the title says, this will be my first solo trip out of my home country. Saying this, I'm actually quite uneasy and nervous about going. I'll be flying out on Tuesday morning, arriving in China with a near 6 hour layover, then flying into Ho Chi Minh City at 1:35am. So I'll have to navigate a foreign airport at night, and get to my hotel.

My plan is to work my way up the coast to Hanoi and get the sleeper train back to Ho Chi Minh City. Nothing really locked in, but there are a few things I want to see along the way.

Really, I'm looking for tips to ease my anxieties. Anything to make my trip that little bit less daunting.

Thanks everyone.

First time traveling to Hanoi!!!

Hi everyone!

My bf(30M) and I(33F) are planning to take a 7 day trip to Hanoi mid-end of July! I've never planned a trip like this before and I'm not sure how to go about researching things to do or see. We're big foodies, and pho is my absolute favorite food so I'm super super SUPER excited for that haha.

I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for things for us to see or do so I can start planning an itinerary. We both love history and architecture!

Budget for Vietnam trip from India (2 people, splitting costs?)

Hey everyone!

I’m planning a trip to Vietnam from India and wanted a realistic idea of the budget from people who’ve actually been there recently.

•	How much did your total trip cost (including flights)?

•	How many days did you stay and which cities did you cover?

•	If you travelled as a couple / with a friend, how much did it cost per person after splitting hotels, transport, etc.?

•	What was your flight cost from India?

I’m trying to understand a rough per person budget for a 8-10 day trip if expenses are shared.

Would really appreciate if you could share your breakdown or even a rough estimate 🙏

Thanks in advance!
