Long story short I’ve owned this 2003 Toyota Matrix 1.8L (1ZZ-FE) for the last 10 years. When I bought it, it had 66,000km now it’s sitting at 186,000km and the whistle is still and has always been there. Mainly only when accelerating harder or going up hills.
I recently replaced air filter hose, air intake manifold gasket, and upstream o2 sensor. No luck with whistle gone taken to multiple shops and no one seems to have an answer. Many have tried and failed, I’m open to any suggestions I will make it my life goal to fix this whistle.
Parked beside this today at lunch thought it was worth the share
What all can I do to squeeze a little more power outta this puppy? Im not in the budget for a turbo or anything along those lines :(
I've been thinking about a new exhaust system and a cold air intake (either routed near battery terminal or into of the fog light brackets XD), but otherwise I dont know what else I could do this car haha. I know it's a bit silly to dump money into a base model but damn i love this 'trix, lmk!
Upstream and downstream cats. Needless to say, im gonna need new cats. But, if im not mistaken, these died via oil consumption, and getting new cats will help for a year till this happens again. I figure ill just strait pipe it, I dont care about noise (though I dont wanna be obnoxious) and i dont care about inspection (havnt for over a year, never had any trouble. Only thing it failed for was the exhaust broke by the muffler as they all do) what strait pipe or exhaust kits can I buy that will just bolt right up and that dont have a cat, so im not replacing a cat every year like its a damn consumable
Got the same 40mm lift kit that has been posted in this sub (thanks!) and installed it with just a couple modifications (bolts for the front ones didn’t fit the stock nuts ) what should I do next to this thing??? I’ve banged it up pretty good you can’t really tell here but the hood is kinda messed up so I don’t really care about resale haha. It’s already got an inch and quarter hitch which I’ve got a little cargo rack for. Unfortunately my summer tires are pretty new so they’ll stay in but thinking of getting some beefy snow tires next fall to really show off the lift

Long time lurker here. Here’s my 03 matrix xr had it for almost 4 years now I got it from a lady who’s husband passed away it was parked for about 5 years till I got it. Came with the bazooka tube I’ve replaced just about everything in the suspension and brakes fell in love with it that I got my daughter a 05 Corolla for her first car. Currently swapping to black rims and about to tint it it’s hard getting a good weekend with no rain out here. I haul water heaters doors all types of stuff in here and what I can’t fit I use my suburban. I need a roof rack.
Found a 2006 xr its got 72k miles and very clean all around. Its the 5 speed manual and drives good. Dealer is asking 9k could maybe work down to 8.5k. Anyone have some advice on this who has a similar model?
Whenever I bring my rpms into the higher side of things, 4500, 5000, 5500, it starts making that first weird noise. Then it starts making a noise i can only describe as "skritchy". Anyone have any ideas why its making those noises? Also likes to surge at anything past like 4k. Never really take it over 4k because of it, though recently ive been experimenting with how to use that rpms range because it doesnt have jack all for power without it.. especially uphill. Anyone got any ideas? It'd be a great help. Thank you!
06 matrix, manual 5 speed c59, 1zzfe. Currently sitting at 212,553 miles. Trans swapped it about 2k miles ago, trans has roughly 122k miles.
As for the surging at 4k rpms, I tried cleaning the maf that didnt do anything. It starts softly at around 3500 sometimes, but 90% of the time, 4k rpms hits it starts surging. Im thinking vvti. Anyone got any ideas?
As for the noises, they come pretty much directly from under the shifter right down by the exhaust. Its got no other exhaust noises, other then the fact that the exhaust right around where the rear axle would be isnt really attached.
Noticed this strip on the bottom of my windshield is loose, looks like it was glued on and maybe the adhesive has worn out. Would love to fix it myself if it’s relatively easy to do.
Would love to know what this rubber strip is called that sits above where the cowl meets the windshield so I can look up parts to replace or repair it.
Anybody have a similar issue? Did you leave it or replace/repair it? Is it a case of gluing it back down with the appropriate adhesive?
Just trying to take real good care of my new-to-me 2011 Matrix!
Thanks!
Rarely ever together at the same place/time. In fact, this was the last time they were.. 4/3. My 09 & 04. Re-cleared the 09's headlights right after this. Now it's on loan to my kid who can't seem to keep tires on his car. 🤦🏼♀️🥰
85,000 miles, no issues no lights. 2 sets of keys, if it’s available Friday I may go check it out but I feel like the price is high. I have a 2008 with 208k I know how to work on them. Mine needed water pump radiator thermostat serpentine belt. I am not sure I think it’s on the high side
I was able to find some perfect condition leather seats for my 2003 vibe gt, back seats bolted right in. The fronts seem to have different wiring though, my old ones have an airbag, new ones don't and all connectors seem different. Has anyone figure this out before?
I am considering seeing if I can move the old wiring over to the new seats, if not is there a way to bypass the airbag to ensure i don't get a light?
If this doesn't work I was going to see if I can almost dissect the seat and move the cushions to the old rail...
First 2 photos are the new seats, middle 2 are the old seats, and last 2 are the seat connections within the car itself
Hey everyone,
My friend recently passed and I inherited his 06 Toyota Matrix. Was running really when and then was parked for about a week. When I went to start it again it is completely dead. Like it has no battery kinda dead. When we hooked it up to my moms car with booster cables the head lights came on but that was it. Found the 100A fuse was split so we bought another and just replaced it. Still absolutely nothing though so I'm at a loss. Does anyone have any tips at all to help diagnose the issue? I've done a decent amount of my own mechanics but the electrical side of things has always eluded me.
Thanks!
Have an 05 matrix with this down O2 sensor issue. Was told that the connection to the cat is “mushrooming” and I’m not sure what to do. Is this fixable 🥹 or do I need a full exhaust replacement
