[Discussion] The show was way better than I thought it would be.

At first I had no interest in watching the show since I assumed it would be like some of the older show attemps (like the beauty and the beast show that got repackaged as a movie and was just so boring) but when I did start watching i was so surprised that it was actually compelling and real effort was put into it. Obviously it's still a kida show and can be a bit limited by that but they managed to handle some mature topics very well. Anyway there's no real point to this post besides me being happy that the show was good, even has me looking up fanfics for it.

So I was looking at twitter comments about Repunzel being in Sofia the First: Royal magic and alot of people were mentioning how she was wearing shoes.

Obviously she didn't wear in the original movie but is the fact she's wearing them a huge deal?

[Discussion] Do you wish the series had Rapunzel and Eugene having big passionate arguments? Or do you Iike how the series always kept them subdued and tender?

[Discussion] Rootbound Quotes!

Source

Couple things of note here:

- The book is going to have Rapunzel adjusting to not having her long hair anymore, poor girl 😭

- “Minister Cressian” sounds very “Chris/Christ” coded but also sounds like “Crescent” which could be an allusion to the moon. The kingdom already has a star-themed name, so the this seems to play into that. And they seem to have a semi-antagonistic or at least not super familiar relationship.

- I love the idea that Rapunzel talks to herself as a stress response from her long-term isolation. Very fitting. I wish the show had done more stuff like this!

- Someone is giving someone the business about diplomacy likely this “Minister Cressian” person to Rapunzel or Eugene. And i love it. I hope we get to see them be out of their depth in situation like this where neither of them have any experience whatsoever and it MATTERS to the plot gosh-darn it!

- Someone had a constellation themed robe. Still more star symbology. (Also, isn’t there a Vat7K character like that???)

- Astera, very stellar, very good thematically. And I like the idea of Rapunzel having a very limited worldview due to her upbringing but speaking to understand the would though the limited window of her hobbies/interests.

What do you guys think? Any ideas predictions about what the plot is going to be?

A while after the series has concluded, a physical version of the artbook was made exclusively for the member of the crew and not meant for a commercial release

So i made it myself based on the official footages of the real thing but also fetched official art, behind the scenes, storyboards and assets for every single episodes and more.

You can have access to it in Artbook folder . Feel free to dowload the PDF versions as well !

The full book might be a bit heavy to open so i suggest you to check it by seasons

I also included official Tangled the series comics, novels and more in The library

Enjoy !

Similar to the original film, Tangled the series shows a range of fashion eras! The nobility shown in Before Ever After wear mostly 18th-19th centuries clothing, whereas the lower classes and servants wear medieval/renaissance fashion.

So what time period is it? Technically…not anytime specific, though most art books say the film is set sometime between the 1650s and 1810s. Ofc there’s anachronisms (Varian “invented” hot running water in Corona but it wasn’t invented until 1868).

People wanted shipping unbanned, and back on the menu, so with unbanning it also, comes allowing discourse and debate.

So let's point this one out.

Rapunzel x Cassandra is classisst!

Eugene:

>Orphan (Foundling in the series, even worse as it's literal abandonment, of course the series retcons his rogue blood and makes him a blue blood, but he was still RAISED an orphan in an era where having rogue blood, or being born 'wild,' classified you as subhuman.)

Had no one and nothing.

Raised a commoner.

Ended up resorting to thievery to survive starving on the streets and wilderness.

Re-invented himself to be someone instead of no one, and survive.

If going by Series, got mixed up in organized crime gangs like think Oliver Twist as a kinchin cove to an upright man.

Cassandra:

>Born to Gothel, a doxy by rogue classifications and thus a wild dell herself, YET she was found and taken in by the Captain of the Guard. In that day and age (15th-18th century if we go by all the eras creators have said over the years) to be a knight or Captain of the Royal Guard you had to be a NOBLE.

To be the level of servant she was, aka a lady in waiting, you also had to be a noble. So Cassandra was not a commoner. She was born one, but she was not raised one.

Raised by a loving father, who may have been a bit strict and stuck to varied sexist of that era, but still allowed her to train with the guard, gave her a home, family, and got her in with the servants to allow her an upbringing which would have been difficult in that time.

Eugene:

>Finds Rapunzel, who falls for him first, advancing with the questions and body language before Eugene finally opens up and falls for her.

>Rapunzel is the first one to see through the role and love and accept him for who he is unconditionally.

>Decides ON HIS OWN without Rapunzel telling him to, to give up his role and shield and occupation of survival to be with her.

>Gives up his life to free her.

FANDOM: "Let's take Rapunzel from the literal orphan who had nothing and was considered subhuman and hated until she came and saw him, and accepted him, with him giving his life for her to give her to the adopted into nobility, and cared for girl who got to live in a castle all her life and train with knights in a society that would normally not allow it showing she had privilege while she's completely toxic to Rapunzel and their chemistry is Rapunzel just obsessing over her for no reason but their lesbians and that's hot and if you disagree you're homophobic."

Why couldn't the series have let them have this? She's not ready for marriage yet? Boom! Promise ring. They promise to get engaged later.

It doesn't work against anything as she was ready to say yes and looked thrilled before he mentioned staying in a castle. A promise ring means future engagement, no fear of the castle.

If the series had just given us this, then the marriage plot wouldn't have been as bad as people take it these days.

It literally even fits the timeline! It says they're usually given 6 months later. The series starts 6 months later.

[Discussion] HELP! - The Crazy World Building of Tangled the Animated Series

Hello everyone! I want to build a reference document for the world building elements for the Tangled Animated Series. I’m working on a fanfiction, and I’d like to compile the canon setting details into one place for easy reference! (Note: not looking to be Vat7K compliant.)

Eventually it would be cool to put it into a more visual form and perhaps eventually a wiki.

This is a rough draft so I’m looking to crowd-source feedback! So please please let me know if you see anything that stands out to you as incorrect or if I missed any important (or unimportant!!) elements of the various different settings!

The sources I used were the show, the 3 Series/Pitch Bibles, interviews from Chris Sonnenberg/Ricky Roxburgh, and the BNF blog. But I did include a few popular fan theories and personal speculations, but they are clearly indicated.

Please feel free to include fan theories too in feedback, but please make they are labeled as such 😃

In no particular order:

Koto:

Each of the daughters has a flower that matches their momma's dress!!

  • One of the “Seven Kingdoms”
  • Flag: White unicorn on a pink field
  • According to character designer Amanda Jolly:
    • "Think standard “American/Euro” fairytale royals. Black and white, in your typical floofy animation royal dresses."
  • “Cliffs of Koto” from the Bird episode show us Koto has giant ancient statues of people:
    • One of the Statues very much looks like a Greek philosopher
    • A few look like roman soldiers
    • One is just straight up the Buddha.
  • Geography features massive craters and Giant’s Causeway rock formations:

A bird-witch family just lives here ig...

  • They appear to be at least somewhat affected by the Black Rocks.
  • The Kotos' Queen chose traditional ballroom dancing for their “Contest of the Crowns” event.
    • Cass and Raps consider it “Unbearably Stuffy.”
    • Queen of Ingvarr is openly annoyed by the dance.
  • They wear TIGHT corsets.
  • Princesses found the concept of “spirit bracelets” funny. So it's likely not a cultural practice for them.
  • Reportedly the people are “Kotos” not “Kotoans”

Ingvarr:

What do the beads mean?????????

  • One of the “Seven Kingdoms”
  • Flag: Roaring red lion head on black field
  • Warrior Culture/Tradition
  • According to character designer Amanda Jolly:
    • "So while I can’t speak to whatever backstory our show may have given the fictional country of Ingvarr, I can say that the designs themselves were based on Persian/Iranian women.
    • I collected lots of images of both modern Persian women and women in traditional Persian garb to influence the draping and details of their costuming (eventually I’ll post some concept images where you’ll see more options of what those characters could have looked like/dressed in).
    • And then I pumped up the “warrior” aspect by melding those traditional elements with the silhouette of old European armor."
  • Their army has many Warrior Women.
  • Cass had nearly been recruited by the Queen directly—to her “Personal Battalion”
  • This kingdom seems to have an ADVANCED mechanical advantage over all other nations. Their mechanical lion is on par with anything Der Sonne, Demanitus, and even Varian have ever made.
  • Beaded headbands are worn by the women, with different number/color beads on different individuals, their meaning (if any) is unknown.
  • They wield swords that resemble the Bronze Age leaf-shaped swords and/or Greek xiphos. (Either that or they are *another* Lord of the Rings Reference lol)
  • Queen seemed disgusted when Cass chose personal alliance over ambition, could be her individual disposition or could be indicative of wider cultural values.
  • Queen seems to be so anti-nepotism that she’s cheering *against* her own daughters at the end of contest of the crowns at a certain point. Could indicate an extreme meritocratic culture, or like above, maybe she’s just a weirdo.
  • Ingvarr’s Contest of the Crowns competition was likely the Wild Carriage ride. Then subsequently in the finals they provided the Mecha Lion Capture the Flag.
  • The princesses of Ingvarr were crowned as the champions of the Contest of the Crowns.
  • In the TTS Staff art book it appears that the original name for this Kingdom was going to be "Zulberg" which was referenced later in Pioncosta.

Neserdnia:

Don't let the clothes fool you: They run an industrial trade empire

  • One of the “Seven Kingdoms”
  • Banner: Seashell-Blue/Yellow
  • According to character designer Amanda Jolly:
    • ”Based on Pacific Islanders. Instead of typical crowns like the Kotos wear, they wear flowers and beading.”
  • Native habitat of  Üümlauts!
  • Native habitat of  Dragons!
  • Volcano island, archipelago city, as well as mainland:
  • Place where Red and Angry stole many things.
  • The Magical shell house from day of the animals likely originated here!
  • Seems to be very close to Corona, at least a days ride.
  • Better supplier of rare alchemical supplies than Corona.
  • MAJOR trade partner to Corona. Two separate episodes in S3 were based off trading with them.
  • They export:
    • Cumquats
    • Wool
    • Lavender Oils
    • Porcelain Dolls
    • Elaborate and fancy Neserdnian Riding hats
    • Tea cups
    • Chalices, etc.
  • Willow traveled from here prior to her episode.
  • Neserdnia’s Contest of the Crowns competition was likely Cake Decorating, mainly because of the process of elimination and because they have been shown to export fancy dishes.
  • Fan-Theory: Nigel/Willow/Arianna might be from here -> A fan theory is that this is the homeland of Arianna, Willow, and Nigel. We know that dragons come from here and Nigel’s home was beset by dragons. Further, it would be highly unlikely that a foreign national would have such a high-ranking position on his own, so the idea is that he came with Arianna when she moved to Corona to marry Fred, and Willow’s travels there would be a visit home.

Bayangor:

I wish I had that kind of chill tbh,,,

  • One of the “Seven Kingdoms”
  • Flag: Green branch/blossoms on a yellow field
  • According to character designer Amanda Jolly:
    • “Asia mixed with Classic Greece.  I wanted the women themselves to look of Asian descent, but for their outfits to be a blend of kimonos and ancient Greek robing and draping.”
  • Bayangor’s Contest of the Crowns competition was likely Befriend Woodland Creatures seeing how the Bayangoran princess was so happy with her little deer, and process of elimination.
  • In the Development Materials from the TTS staff artbook it appears that these characters were originally to be from Equis.

Galcrest:

https://preview.redd.it/rojwkyfklc0h1.jpg?width=1288&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd6e2cfd88847021bac4e1084a880466aa709d1a

  • One of the “Seven Kingdoms”
  • Flag: Blue penguin on white field.
  • Galcrest’s Contest of the Crowns competition was likely Embroidery because between Galcrest and Neserdnia, Galcrest seems to have more embroidery on their clothes.
  • According to character designer Amanda Jolly:
    • “Based on Inuit women. I tried to combine more current garb with traditional details.”
  • Fan Theory: Could possibly inhabit the icy northern region near Kresten Loch...
  • The original name of this Kingdom was going to be "Snowlandia" 😭

Pitsford:

https://preview.redd.it/z6nnahzilc0h1.jpg?width=966&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f08b5d5091b36851c940cca16e60c1d4fde1c4e

  • One of the “Seven Kingdoms”
  • Flag:  Gold Griffin of red field
  • Their leader is a “Griffin” not a King.
  • Griffin is easily offended and prideful. Has a reputation for being "notoriously insecure" This is likely a personal disposition and not a cultural additude.
  • Title: “Your Excellency” is used for the Griffin.
  • King Frederic of Corona proposed a trade accord with the Griffin of Pittsford, which heavily favored the Griffin, in order to secure peace between the two nations and prevent the Seven Kingdoms from entering a path to war.
    • This suggests that they were on the path to war prior to these negotiations. What factors had led to this posture are unknown.
  • So they are clearly politically important enough to be a major player in continental politics while not being an economic superpower.
  • Much poorer than Corona. The Griffin said he needed to “swallow my pride and accept help”
  • Griffin sales home in a tiny boat. Meaning the kingdom is likely accessable by sea.
  • Griffin’s uniform resembled WW1 era German uniforms. But likely they intention was that it would resemble a Napoleonic uniform.
  • According to character designer Amanda Jolly:
    • “I was literally told, “Take the king we already have and just turn him into a woman around his age.  Also turn him two slightly younger women.”  SO THAT IS WHAT I DID.  haha.”
  • Pitsford’s Contest of the Crowns competition was likely Identifying Cutlery.

EQUIS:

https://preview.redd.it/cvbvhmqhlc0h1.jpg?width=1150&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e702cef6a8dedf273e61c6e6497876c8b0aa22ac

  • NOT one of the “Seven Kingdoms”
  • Ruled by King Trevor
  • Equis is described as the kingdom “next door” to Corona.
  • The TTS series bible described the kingdom as “extremely prosperous.”
  • King Trevor has been lifetime rivals with Fredric.
  • Trevor and Fredric apparently competed over Arianna even before their marriage.
  • Royal Seal – Trevor Jr. (Only kingdom that has been shown to recognizes sentient animal rights.)
  • Has “Navy Seals” (They allowed animals to join the military/guard before Max!)
  • Problems resolved by Prank Wars and Dance Offs! (In contrast to Corona’s executions and forced prison labor!)
  • Flag: Either Crossed Axes - This is speculation based on the book Rapunzel was reading about it, and repeated imagery in the castle. OR maybe the Crown Trevor wears based on the Artbook Image
  • Name of the kingdom is possibly a “Dos Equis” Beer reference.
  • Employs “1000 guards on duty at any given time.”
  • Many bobby traps in castle; The Castle of Equis is specifically described as impenetrable.
  • Only Eugene has ever sucessfully infiltrated the castle.
  • Guards uniform look like the Swiss Guard.
  • The kingdom maintains a Navy, including the "Navy Seals," commanded by Trevor.
  • King Trevor engages in pranks against King Frederic, often managing to thoroughly embarrass him.
  • Most Notably: The very same act, breaking into a castle to steal/(kidnap?) results in a brutal execution in Corona results only in a harmless prank in Equis.
  • Inter-Kingdom law requires respect for the institution of marriage, But NOT over international waters.
  • Employs a ninja-garbed spy network to report to King Trevor about what goes on in Corona. And carry out pranks. Easily the most robust information network in the setting.

VARDAROS:

https://preview.redd.it/buf189sglc0h1.jpg?width=1501&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60b59d7b44a34ca18e9911fcbcffdb554f713e4f

  • From the TTS Series Bible:
    • "Once a vibrant and colorful town (think Las Vegas), Vardaros has become a slum overcome by crime, thanks to the Baron. Danger lurks around every corner, and no one can be trusted. .... we see them help turn the city around, so that by the time they leave, it's on the path to becoming great again."
  • City Banner: “Welcome to Vardaros” with red/pink flowers atop a thorny cog wheel.
  • Once referred to as “The City of Fun and Games”
  • Eugene once considered it one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
  • It is located in "sneezeweasel country"
  • Overrun by black rocks.
  • City nestled inside a high canyon.
  • Chris Sonnenberg said in an interview it was meant to be a reference to his time in New York, but also said it was based on his hometown of San Bernardino.
  • Baron’s mansion is in the back of the canyon. A huge lavish estate with golden lion décor.
  • Quaid is now in charge. Vex is his deputy.
  • This town is where Eugene and Lance grew up!
  • There is a whole script for an episode meant to take place at their orphanage set here called “The Trial of Fitzherbert and Schnitz”
  • Numerous weapon vendors. Including Vex. (Formerly)
  • Citizens prefer “edgy” activities.
  • They are characterized as a "rougher around the edges" crowd who are not typically inclined toward celebrations like the Corona tradition of a Goodwill Festival. One resident told Rapunzel he hated "goodwill."
  • Home of: Captain Quaid, Vex, Stalyan, the Baron, and Anthony the Weasel.
    • And Formerly: Eugene, Lance and the Stabbington Brothers.

PINCOSTA:

https://preview.redd.it/lpe8rkvflc0h1.jpg?width=1899&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=39e765e1289adf32ff279d955095f05c16f9d9dc

  • The Hamlet of Pincosta is known for its warm smiles, hearty handshakes, and its world-famous Pincostan Pecan Pie.
  • Send their criminals to the Copper Mines of Malany - Forced labor, (potential destination of Corona’s “Prison barge of the lost sea” perhaps?)
  • Used to treasure the “Eye of Pincosta”, a giant red diamond.
  • Noted as the second biggest diamond in the world (after Zulberg's)
    • Note that "Zulberg" was the original name for Ingvarr.
  • Seems to be governed by a Constable, similar to Vardaros.
  • From the TTS Series Bible:
    • "CONSTABLE LUMPH - The chief lawman in the Hamlet of Pincosta, a modest berg... When Eugene walks through town again, Lumph wastes no time locking up Eugene and holding him accountable for his theft. Lumph is a bitter, self-important, and somewhat pretentious man who relishes locking Eugene into a cell, and taunts Eugene at every opportunity*
  • They seem to favor russian “onion domes” for their architecture.
  • Turbans.

TIRAPAI ISLAND:

https://preview.redd.it/597c9v2flc0h1.jpg?width=1567&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=764b96c3d3969b9bee565a1b97e150bac1ea7dc9

  • A tropical island with white sandy beaches, inlets, and coves
  • The plaque on the island reads, Tirapai is an "Agricultural port known for its bountiful fruit. The waning of the moon sharpens the sweetness of its crop, making the lunar eclipse an optimal time to harvest. A cargo ferry arrives to bring the island's fruit to the mainland each eclipse."
  • The "crop" is a fruit called "pompoen", which is harvested by a tribe of small, leaf-like indigenous creatures called "The Lorbs."
  • From the (UPDATED) Series Bible:
    • Small, green, leaf-like creatures who speak in Old World Dutch-style accents, the Lorbs are indigenous to tropical Tirapai Island.
    • Their village, Lorbwalda, features dome-shaped villas and lush vegetation, and is the location where the Corona Lanterns-released every year by King Frederic on Rapunzel's birthday-have settled back down to earth (the superstitious Lorbs mistake the lanterns as "gifts from the heavens").
    • A festive group, the Lorbs also work hard at harvesting their beloved Pompoen fruit. They live in fear of the monstrous "firefly" - a beast which regularly returns to their land and destroys their crops.
    • They eagerly await the return of a legendary "Lizard King" (for whom they mistake Pascal) to defeat this menace.
  • Ricky Roxburgh really wanted us to know it was his idea for them to have a "Lorbrary"
  • They have a game called "schlafen doofen" which means "sleeping fool"... it's basically just limbo.
  • Home of the warlock named Horb. He created a magical idol (Idol of Vershaftsbezeigungengien) to eliminate sadness. It ended up corrupting everyone and he needed to preform a ritual ritual atop the temple of Torb.
  • The other souce of Dark Magic on the island is the magic wishing well, from the Islands apart. Fountain of Unbeaten Gain Faifel which grants any wish exactly as one wants it at first, but then turns even the purest of wishes into terrible living nightmares if the wisher doesn't take the wish back by sunset on the ninth day.
    • Trivia: In the original Pitch Bible the premise of this was to have a tribe of *people* worshipping *Rapunzel*! It was later changed to be the leaf people worshipping Pascal, likely due to optics reasons...

Okay.... Now the big ones:

THE DARK KINGDOM:

I wish we'd spent a whole season here tbh....

  • NOT one of the “Seven Kingdoms”
  • Emblem is the black comet the Brotherhood have tattood on their hands.
    • Though on the scroll, and in a few other key places it’s the ornate crescent moon design. (It had been thought that the Cresent moon was the symbol of the kingdom and the comet for the order of the Brotherhood, but RoTK verified this was not so.)
  • Nocturnal/Plunged in darkness in some places. In other parts it seems sunny and covered in living plants and animals.
  • The existence of the Dark Kingdom is rooted in an event that occurred millennia or eons ago in the heavens, during which an ancient power was divided, causing both the Sundrop and the Moonstone to fall to Earth
  • BACKSTORY FROM ADIRA AND EDMOND:
    • E: “Once upon a time, a single drop of moonlight fell from the heavens. And from this small drop of moonlight formed a single, seductive opal stone. It had the ability to destroy any and all who would seek to possess it. Centuries passed, this opal's defenses spread, and from that grew a kingdom. A kingdom founded by our ancestors. Generation after generation of our bloodline have stood guard here, helping to protect the world from the opal's limitless power."
    • A: "But it was Edmund, the last of the Dark Kings, who tried to end this legacy and destroy the stone. That didn't go so well..."
    • E: "I commanded my subjects to leave and never return. Even my own son. I sent my most trusted soldiers into the world to ensure this power be kept a secret. For if it ever fell into the wrong hands, it would mean certain doom.”
  • Chris Sonnenberg remarked once that he had a whole backstory about the farmer and his son who found the Moonstone originally.
  • King Edmund was the "last of the Dark Kings" before Rapunzel's arrival. His reign ended tragically when he attempted to neutralize the Moonstone.
  • There are two statues that resemble the Argonath from Lord of the Rings. This and the Season 3 episode: Return of the King are references to Lord of the Rings.
  • From the series bible:
    • “In the middle of a black, jagged desolate landscape is the spire-ridden Dark Kingdom. Thousands of years ago, the Moonstone caused a monolithic black rock to sprout, which eventually grew into the Dark Kingdom-a towering castle of glistening, razor-sharp rocks."
    • "A long line of descendants has dwelt in this kingdom, each of them swearing to protect the sacred Moonstone held in the kingdom from the outside world."
    • "Today, King Edmond lives there, and he has commanded his best warriors-The Brotherhood-to leave the kingdom and ensure that nobody ever finds the Moonstone for it is too dangerous for any man to hold.”
  • The Demanitus scroll heavily portrayed the Dark Kingdom.
  • Demanitus inhabited the Great Tree for a time, suggesting the sorcerer spent time there.
  • Demanitus's Labrynth was in or near the Dark Kingdom.
  • Flynn Rider books were widely circulated, including here.
  • DK Ghost curses are as real as Saporian ones, (Perhaps the same curses?)
  • Rhinos, GIANT salamanders, Bearcats are native to this land.
  • Cable cars are used to navigate over the giant fields of Black rocks.
  • River of Lava under the castle! Geothermal energy applications?!
  • Booby Traps in the castle! Though most are old and inert.
  • Stained glass appears to be a HUGE way for them to pass down history and culture for them.
  • Queen weirdly looks like Stalyan???
  • Seem to be significance placed on purple amethyst stones, not dissimilar to Varian’s “Cassandrite” They apear as crown-jewels, sword inlays, and Edmond's necklace.
  • King: Edmond
    • Prince: Horace/Eugene
  • Kings through history: Edmond was the “Last of the Dark Kings” – we see at least 3 former dark kings in portrait, statue and ghost forms. One Queen too!

lotta stained glass...

  • Brotherhood: A group of warriors sworn to keep any and all away from the Dark Kingdom. Adira, Hector, Quirin and Edmond.
  • All the members of the Brotherhoosd have been shown to wear fur of some kind. (Perhaps a cultural practice.)
  • A part of the oaths of the Brotherhood involve making them susceptible to mental enslavment via "The Mindtrap" magical artifact.
  • Trivia: the original pitch bible refered to them as "The Brotherhood of The Stone" :'(
  • Great Tree is the boarder marker to the Dark Kingdom - Meaning also that Cass’s Season 2 Armor was DK in origin.
  • Every single man from the Dark Kingdom has facial hair of some kind and many have full beards. (Could possibly be a cultural practice.)
  • Other possible cultural fashion; The majority of characters shown from the DK have long hair.
  • Also it was said that Adira's atire/face paint was not supposed to be indicitive of her culture either:
    • From Ben Balistreri: "It’s paint and definitely not cultural. Adira is an interesting character that may or may not be trustworthy. The design is there to hint that sometimes there are two sides to a character. (Also I just thought it looked really cool!)"
  • The Great Tree:
  • From the Series Bible:
    • "In between two mountains sits The Great Tree, which is in fact hundreds of giant sequoia-like trees that have grown closely together. Over the millennia, they have intertwined to become a single tree as big as a mountain."
    • "Traveling through its hollowed-out inside is the quickest way through the mountain range Hector, the most sadistic of King Edmund's The Brotherhood, dwells in The Great Tree to make sure any interlopers or those otherwise curious about the Dark Kingdom meet a sorrowful end."
    • "Thousands of years ago, the tree was once a sentient being, a torce for good. But it was corrupted by the evil sorcerer - Zhan Tiri-so that it would destroy any who approached. But Zhan Tiri's mortal enemy, Lord Demanitus found a way to destroy the tree by piercing it's heart with and enchanted spear."

☀️CORONA☀️:

The original movie never actually named it. They just called it \"The Kingdom\"

  • One of the "Seven Kingdoms"
  • Their banner is a Golden Sun on a purple field.
  • Despite prominent cultural markers, Corona has repeatedly been denied by creators as a straightforward stand-in for France or Germany.
  • The Disney History Book cited the movie era as 1650-1815
  • Government:
    • Corona is ruled by a monarchy (the specific nature of which is unknown), with King Frederic and Queen Arianna presiding over the kingdom
    • The King has the authority to make major decisions of rule, including forbidding Rapunzel from leaving the kingdom's walls using his "martial right"?
  • Security:
    • Maintained by the Royal Guard, originally captained by Cassandra's father.
    • Guard patrols are frequent; for example, security was doubled at the main gates and south towers for the coronation, and standard procedure dictated patrols every five minutes in high-security areas like the gallery.
    • Eugene Fitzherbert later assumes the role of Captain of the Guard**.**
  • Geography:
    • The capital city is built on an island resembling Mont-Saint-Michel.
      • Within the castle, there are impressive collections of artwork, elegant furniture and several spacious rooms including a great hall, a guard tower, a throne room, a majestic garden terrace, a dungeon, and a network of secret underground tunnels.
    • The kingdom is geographically diverse, featuring mountains, forests, and coastal areas
    • Super Sunny/Warm possibly near the equator (?)
      • The only bad weather we see was apparently caused by a Demon.
      • A few inches of snow was enough to declare a "snow day" lol
  • Festivals:
    • Corona has FREQUENT festivals.
    • Rapunzel's Birthday
    • Day of Hearts - his day commemorates the union of Corona and Saporia after a long war.
    • Couples celebrate by signing Herz DerSonne's journal
    • Goodwill festival/Gopher Grab - Goodwill
    • Gopher Grab: This is a major "Corona institution" celebrated annually, marking the 500th anniversary in one instance. The event is highly symbolic, representing "honor and tradition throughout this kingdom"
    • Challenge of the Brave - a fighting tournament open to contestants from various lands.
    • Science Expos (WAY less attendance than the combat events)
    • Ricky Roxburgh said he had developed ideas for a Chistmas Episode
  • Culture:
    • The importance of supporting local businesses is highlighted, the King creates new demand for the cobbler's services to ensure the livelihood of local industry.
    • Art is valued, and the royal family supports artists. The city features a Gallery of the Seven Kingdoms, and the monarchy commissions murals and portraits that are intended to communicate the identity and uniqueness of the ruler.
    • Formal events often involve elaborate clothing, including corsets, buckles, and bows. Foreign dignitaries wear clothing that designates high social status, such as a Duchess's "hand-woven coiffure, weft from the finest silk and vicuña fabrics."
    • "Steed Capering was invented in Corona." Very similar to Dressage (Disgusting and inhumane btw...)
    • "First of the seven kingdoms to have hot running water"
    • Pseudo-Christianity:
      • Raps and Eugene are clearly getting married in a church.
      • Cass was in danger of being sent off to a convent (Sometimes lol).
      • Ricky Roxburgh's aformentioned scrapped Christmas episode.
      • Knights were protrayed with Corses on their helms.
  • Legal System:
    • Execution happy. Will execute for property crime
    • All decisions are made by the King. King is judge & jury.
    • Convicts have NO right to defend themselves unless they have cronyism on their side. "Onus procedendi" which only gives them 24 hours to build a case if a "statesperson" ie Princess sponsors them.
    • King can and does lock up minors, despite claims to the contrary. (Lance, Bernsy, Patchy and Varian.) Perhaps only male chldren??
    • King can and does lock up a tailor who accidentally riped his robe in the stockades.
    • Uses maritime slavery = sends prisoners to "The prison barge of the lost sea"
    • Indefinite prison sentences for minor financial crimes.
    • The Captain of the guard has the right to retire whenever he feels like he doesn't want to carry out orders anymore.
    • Lady Caine described it as: "18 years ago the princess was taken from Corona, and it was because of her the king unfairly cracked down on all those he considered undesirable."
    • It is apparently considered normal for minor prisoners to be locked up in the same dungeon cell with violent adult offenders. This has a radicalizing effect.
  • History:
    • The Saporian War: Centuries ago, Corona fought a long war with its rival kingdom, Saporia. This conflict ended when Corona's King Herz Der Sonne and Saporia's General Shampanier fell in love and married, leading to lasting peace and uniting the nations. A small sect of Saporian separatists, however, swore revenge.
    • King Herz Der Sonne: During his reign, Corona was in a bitter war with their rival kingdom, Saporia. Under King Der Sonne's rule, a complex tunnel system was built beneath Corona to safely move the kingdom's knights and supplies wherever King Der Sonne needed. A detailed map of the tunnels and their secrets were recorded in a journal, by Der Sonne.
      • He built the tunnels and the automotons.
      • His tomb is resided over by ghosts that were likely implamented by his Saporian wife.
    • Demanitus: refers to himself as Corona's "Eternal Protector"
    • It seems to have been the final settling place of the ancient Lord of Demanitus.
      • Why was Demanitus such a simp for such a historically low-magic/tech nation???
      • One of his larger labs was located on Corona
      • "Eons ago, an evil warlock, Zhan Tiri, had a deep hatred for Corona..."
  • SAPORIA:

Keeep in mind this is Coronan Propaganda...

  • Saporia existed within modern Coronan boarders, possibly a separate Ethnic group.
  • Used to be a separate kingdom, but when Herz der Sonne and General Shampanier got married, they combined the two kingdoms into one under the name Corona.
    • (Somehow a Genral had the authority to do this???)
  • Leader of separatist group: Andrew/Hubert (Shampanier?)
  •  Culturally they don't condone modes of transportation that exploit animals, so their technology is different. (This could possibly a primary point of cultural conflict as Corona has a VERY different approach.)
  • Invented hot air ballons.
  • Banner is a stylized white rose on a dark red background.
  • Clearly have a presence in the DK as evidenced in RDO. (Displaced traveling people? Or refugees?)
  • They are by far the most magically proficient society. (Demanitus connection possibly?) Saporian Wand of Oblivium for example.
  • SAPORIAN APOTHACARY CART HAD:
    • Wand of Oblivium
    • Ice potion
    • Potion that gives one multi-colored hair for a few seconds.
    • Potion that gives a person two heads for a few seconds.
    • Potion that makes someone very tall for a few seconds.
    • Saporian curses are real, and resemble DK curses. (Their Ghostly Guardians look nearly identical.)
  • Feldspar speaks the language due to enigmatic shoe reasons. Mentioning that Saporians "invented the wingtip loafer." Xavior is a lore master.
  • Possibly a reference to "Sapporo" beer.
  • Separatist Members: Andrew/Hupert, Clementine, Juniper, Kai, etc.
  • Random Trivia from the wiki: "The Nation seems to be loosely based on an abandoned idea from Tangled. In the original version, Corona was at war with another nation because they assumed that they were the ones who had kidnapped Rapunzel as an infant."

OTHER PLACES WITHIN CORONA:

One of Eugene's maps??

  • Mount Saison:
    • Where an ancient subterranean machine was built that can control the weather.
    • Prison of the ancient spirits of Zhan Tiri's disciples.
  • Capital City(Corona Village):
    • Commercial hub of the Kingdom of Corona, is a lively town center.
    • Its cobblestone walkways are usually a-bustle with locals, as businesses (which include Monty's Sweet Shop and Feldspar's Cobbler's Shop), cafes and street performers abound.
  • Sundrop Site:
    • The spot where the Royal Guard found and dug-up the magical sun-drop flower rests on the edge of a remote cliff.
    • The site is now home to a commemorative plaque. The black rocks first sprouted near where the miracle flower was found.
  • Old Corona:
    • A rustic village located on the outskirts of the Kingdom of Corona.
    • It is home to Quirin (a member of The Brotherhood) and his son Varian (the local alchemist), and "has been completely ravaged by mysterious black rocks."
    • The Der Sonne Tunnels lead through here.
    • Citizens of this villiage rely entirely on agriculture and working the land, putting them into the peasant class.
    • People were displaced by the blackrocks in the ensuing years to the adjacent famlands.
    • Eventually Old Corona was able to be rebuilt.
  • Janis Point: An ancient Stonehenge-like structure. Cited as mystical ground. Site of dark demon rituals.
  • DerSonne's Tunnels:
    • King Herz Der Sonne created a complex maze of tunnels beneath Corona to move knights and supplies during the war with Saporia.
    • When the war ended the booby-trapped tunnels were hardly used since and only the map in Der Sonne's journal can help people find their way around them, as well as finding hidden entrances to them.
    • This possibly indicates that Quirin's home was some strategically relevant spot for the Saporian forces.
  • The Forest: Located on the mainland, the forest is an expansive area that homes the Snuggly Duckling pub, and a remote tower that held Rapunzel prisoner for eighteen years.
  • The Snuggly Duckling: A recurring location known as a pub or club for Pub Thugs.

BONUS SETTINGS:

KRESTEN LOCH/The Oceans:

I love these guys so much... They are just so inexplicable

Okay hear me out: The same mermen creatures that are native to Kresten Lock also appear pursuing Seraphina on the Island!!!

Thay are called VODNIKS

  • "We are the vodniks and we enforce the laws of the sea!"
  • They have language, Laws and society.
  • The Ice variants wield axes and seem to be highly teritorial and do not speak.
  • The tropical variant wield tridents and expanding/ encasing traps.

THERE IS A WHOLE RACE OF MERMEN WITH ADVANCED SOCIETIES IN THIS SETTING AND NO ONE EVER AKNOWLEDGES IT!!!

  • Duchy of Rochester:
    • Within Corona somewhere.
    • Governed by a Duke and Duchess.
    • Traditional dress and manners (Good to know of if your fic needs stuffy/ judgmental noble types.)
  • Kingdom of Gluegendorf aka Non-Canon land:
    • This is not a canon setting as the episode that introduced it was scrapped.
    • But I think it's worth including in case fanfic writers want a generic "bad guy" setting.
    • Here is the link to the Episode Premise.
  • Duchy of Quintonia: The best world building l've ever seen in any fantasy story ever. Tolkien and Martian wish they could craft a fantasy setting this rich and grounded. Sanderson and Jordan wish they could construct a hard magic system this balanced and solid. Nothing inspires imagination like the master world building in The Duchy of Quintonia and their Beautiful and Honest Duchess!

PHEW!!!

Like I said above, PLEASE let me know if I missed anything or if I absorbed any information from fandom osmosis and didn't label it as speculation or a possibility

(I remember my original draft had some VAT7K info by accident before someone pointed it out.)

And where would you like to go in the tangled setting?? I feel like I'd thrive in Neserdnia tbh...

Obviously you can love it for both reasons, but as I read discussions about it I’ve noticed a kind of line. I personally love it for both reasons but lean more toward the family aspect. It just felt really fresh and different at the time to have that family focus throughout. And if you bring in the series it’s extremely family focused. Please let me know your thoughts!!! 💖💖💖

Not completely sure, as I'd have to find the RAW and have a friend translate the Japanese.

But the Tokyopop official translation didn't use the word years in the joke.

Note: I don't take the manga as an authority, it makes its own changes quite a bit. Just found it interesting they ditched that part.
