I just got a Surly Preamble (my first Surly bike!) and i am considering adding a front rack. I am also putting on a rear rack with panniers.
I’ll be doing some small grocery pickups and carrying stuff to the beach, etc. but also want to start bike commuting to work. I will basically be carrying a 24L AERSF backpack which in it will have a 6-7 pound laptop and my lunch. Maybe 10-11 pounds total.
Not sure if this is better to carry on rear rack/pannier or to throw on a front rack.
I’m looking at the Surly options for Front Rack, 8-Pack, and 24-Pack. I like the idea of the 24 Pack but is that overkill for this bike?
This is my first time getting racks on a bike to carry stuff so hoping to get some advice here.
TIA!
Pardon the indoor pic.. just soo excited for these tires!!

Not a MTB frame one for commuting to work.

I found this one I wonder if the SOMA logo is above the clear coat like surly or under?
And is this SOMA frame E-Coated with automotive process to prevent rust like Surly frames are? because being steel it would rust if not coated I see it's selling for $800 that's hella expensive for a frame with no fork so I assume it's coated?
It's crazy that Priority bikes sell full 8 speed shimano nexus belt drive bikes with steel frame for less than this, YIKES!! did Tariff cause SOMA to raise prices or some shit?
Finally getting back out after the cold and man I missed this. This bike has honestly been therapy for me.
Yeah I know the seat looks low before anyone says it 😅 I learned the hard way that Surly runs big. I’m 5’11 and probably should’ve gone smaller, but it’s too late to swap and I can’t really afford to take the loss and buy another frame.
That said, I still love this thing. Just being out riding again makes it all worth it.
I wanna build my very own Belt Drive Bike a custom one with specs that I want like single speed belt and Carbon Fiber wheelsets etc.
I know surly has E-Coat paint protection on it's frame inside and out like how automotive is done but surly doesn't make belt drive frames sadly.
Someone here said to get SOMA so looking for reviews on this.
The owner was awesome, my kids needed to stretch after the 2 hour drive so they played in his backyard. We just talked about bikes and life. After I test drove it he knocked $50 off and it came with a set of road tires as well as a set of bar mitts.
I just took it for a few mile spin and it was a BLAST. Obviously more work than my road bike, but it took me back. Felt like I was on a bmx again.
Truthfully, I feel like I still want a 1x10 or something but I can’t complain. Very relaxed ride
I know it's only a dream but what a beautiful dream and the day that happens I will be building my own Gates Carbon Belt Drive bike from scratch I already learned how to build 90% of a bike myself yesterday I learned to build a entire wheel from scratch, what a beautiful experience.
I have an idea of a custom Surly Belt drive bike to get that GOD LIKE STEEL IS REAL smooth ass ride.
I thought of even going as far as buying a straggler and getting a professional to cut the frame chain stay or whatever and install the joiner but I am unsure if that would be a good idea
Ooh but what I dream I would be building a custom carbon fiber wheelset with a Alfine 11 hub from scratch. I learned everything from youtube and reddit and I can repair my own bike now it's such a great hobby.
Hi there folks! I’m in search of a niche part! I recently picked up a first gen Pugsley that came with a Mr. Whirly crankset. Looking for a 58-104 BCD spider adapter for that crank. Looks like a super rare part from what I can find online and have a back up plan but figured I’d see if anyone has one kicking around the parts bin as I’d love to run the OG crank that came with bike. Thanks so much!
Looking to swap my QRs out for security skewers like pitlocks, though a glance online seems to suggest people had issues sizing them properly - and no solutions.
Seems to me like I'd want 120mm front and 155mm rear since hubs are usually 100mm and 135mm, and we've got to account for the dropout and racks mounted on it.
Anyone here successfully used any kind of security skewer on their Preamble, and if so what size was it you settled on?
My Benno e-bike is starting to hurt my shoulders and I'm looking to go back from e-bikes to analog power. I figure Surly is likely the direction I'd like to go but I'm not sure where to start with frame models. Ideally in the long run I'd be looking at a more upright posture with a chain and internal gearing. Also prefer larger tires that don't need to be inflated every few days.
My use cases:
daily cruising along beach bike paths. I don't deal in hills very frequently
using my surfboard rack to carry a 9 foot surfboard. I have a 30 inch inseam so ideally a low stepover height to accommodate getting on while the board is there
standard grocery getting with pannier bags. I really like THESE removable ones
Did the first overnighter of the season on my new ogre build. The bike itself rode great, even though it was pushing well over 60 pounds loaded. It stayed pretty nimble and quick, I did have some really twitchy steering when I had loaded the front heavier, so I ended up moving some more stuff into the panniers and that made a huge difference. We had gusts over 30 mph but I helped lead a pack of mostly new folks averaging about 14mph, and an overnight low of 25 with some light flurries in the morning. For our first trip of the season we had 12 riders which I was super stoked for! It’s pretty cold and damp in our part of Wisconsin this time of year but everyone still had a blast. We had my ogre, a big dummy, two bridgeclubs, and a disc trucker on this trip! Anyway if you’re interested here’s the specs.

I am SUPER interested in a Sorceress. I fly for free, and the idea of flying somewhere in the US to test out a bike just sounds like a nice day to me. Can people recommend bike shops that tend to carry a lot of Surly mountain bikes in different sizes? Some kind of premiere Surly dealer? I don't know where to look.
