I just got a Surly Preamble (my first Surly bike!) and i am considering adding a front rack. I am also putting on a rear rack with panniers.

I’ll be doing some small grocery pickups and carrying stuff to the beach, etc. but also want to start bike commuting to work. I will basically be carrying a 24L AERSF backpack which in it will have a 6-7 pound laptop and my lunch. Maybe 10-11 pounds total.

Not sure if this is better to carry on rear rack/pannier or to throw on a front rack.

I’m looking at the Surly options for Front Rack, 8-Pack, and 24-Pack. I like the idea of the 24 Pack but is that overkill for this bike?

This is my first time getting racks on a bike to carry stuff so hoping to get some advice here.
