Unable to accept nose after septoplasty

hi everyone,

I'm almost 4 weeks since having doing my septoplasty operation, and while I will say my breathing has gotten better, for the life of me I cannot look at myself anymore. My nose has completely structurally changed. It now is much shorter, and is just less projected than before, it feels like someone stepped on it which gives it a wider and a flatter appearance. I contacted my surgeon, he said he had to do what he had to do fix the deviation (trigger warning: last post includes the amount of bone removed) but i genuinely feel like i require therapy now because my face has completely changed. my nose used to be my favorite feature of mine and now i can't look at it. it looks so weird now, sitting way lower than it used to, and has no definition or anything. and even the tip now looks like it got "cut off" I know swelling may still be part but the whole structure of it has changed. I don't know what to do anymore I'm so broken

Day 1; kmn

Had mine done yesterday afternoon... No packing, just a stent. And I was fine all night, aside from dry mouth. I could still breathe a little and thought it was going to be an easier recovery than anticipated! And then... Over the course of about ten minutes a couple hours ago... My nose completely clogged and I'm getting the vacuum effect when I swallow. Pressure in my ears. I already want to try to poke a qtip up there just to get a LITTLE relief. Or get a turkey baster and suck out the (I'm assuming) clot.

It's been two hours. How am I going to last a week? What if it doesn't even resolve after the stent removal? I really hope this was worth it ...

PSA: You will be breathing out of your mouth for around a WEEK! Your throat will get so dry, stock up for THAT!!

Hey all, I’m on day 2 post Septoplasty & turbinate reduction. I had made a big grocery shopping trip before the surgery where I picked up my usual staples, not thinking anything of it because I foolishly assumed the healing process would be “business as usual with some bandages on my nose” :)

If you’re about to get this surgery - stock up on things that relieve a dry throat: ice cream, smoothies, juice, water ice, teas, yogurts, those mouthwatering mints…

And soft, non spicy foods!! I have a bunch of bagels in the freezer that I cannot eat because they’re too hard and a Panera soup I can’t have because it’s too spicy.

my ENT has specifically advised against me walking a couple blocks to the corner store until I’m later in my recovery. So I guess I’m stuck doordashing 🥲

Gauze Stitched to Outside of Nose?

I have both gauze and stents IN my nose, but when I woke from surgery I also had gauze sutured to the OUTSIDE of my nose. I have looked everywhere online and haven’t seen this done — has anyone else experienced this? I have my follow up in just over 2 days (Friday) with my doc and will ask, but have been curious.

Substantial volume of negative posts

I see a substantial volume of negativity on this sub. Is general statistic of 99,9% success rate false, or the unlucky people are most likely to be publicly vocal about it bias?

Feeling conflicted about septoplasty

I have a septoplasty scheduled next month and I’m feeling very conflicted about it.

I saw an ENT, who specializes in sleep apnea, a few months ago to talk about why I continue to feel tired despite regular CPAP usage. He examined me and noted my septum was significantly deviated. He recommended I see one of his colleagues who specializes in surgery.

When I saw the specialist, he mentioned how I had significant nasal collapse with a deviated septum. Here’s the crazy thing though: my whole life I’ve felt completely fine. I never have issues breathing through my nose. The doctor mentioned the goal would be to fix my septum so that I’d have better air flow to potentially improve the quality of my CPAP treatment.

I’m starting to get cold feet about the procedure. Many of the stories I’ve read on Reddit are filled with horrors about recovery and complications. I think the biggest thing I’m worried about is undergoing a surgical procedure that may not lead to an appreciable difference in how I feel.

Had Surgery 4/21 - horrible anxiety and sinus infection post operation.

Anyone else dealing with this? I’m taking Tylenol and plenty of fluids. I’m so congested and keep having horrible panic attacks post anesthesia. 😭

Surgery scheduled, do I need?

So had the pre op for my nose, for a turbinate reduction. I've just had a smaller nose, narrow passages my whole life and I feel I can't breath well alot, but honestly, half the time I think do? I've become such a mouth breather but I've been working on breathing through my nose for the last couple months, and it's helped a lot. But still, I don't think it's normal? There's times of the day, like after eating or whatever i seem to not breath well or at all they my nose..but is this just regular human stuff? So, I just randomly recorded videos the other night and I was hoping to get some insight to see what others think about a random night of me breathing.

Lil problem here, I had numerous vids to share, but only lets me post one..the point was to show how my nose is just thru the night(a few hrs or so). I have this for now I guess!

UK Septoplasty, polyp removal & sinus opening widening. Concerns over risks.

Hi everyone,

I am due to undergo a septoplasty to rectify a pretty severe deviation, my entire septum is past the midline and currently inside my left nostril.

At the same time ENT want to remove polyps (mostly from my right nostril which I thought was my good nostril but apparently not) and widen the connections between my sinuses.

I wasn’t really briefed in depth on the risks of the surgery. They were stated as bleeding, infection, septal perforation, CSF leak and if I wanted to know more to look at the NHS website.

After doing that and some research online I found the most concerning of the risks to be empty nose syndrome ENS, but was surprised I hadn’t been told about it.

From reading up I’ve come to the assumption it can happen to anybody with any kind of septum surgery, doesn’t matter if the turbinates are touched or not, but when calling my ENT to discuss it he simply said it’s impossible, we aren’t touching your turbinates so there is no risk.

Am I over thinking the risk or misunderstanding it? I feel like the improvement to my breathing would be substantial as I have 100% mouth breathed for the last 14 years since I had my nose broken however I don’t really feel like a potential life changing and irreparable condition is worth the risk as I don’t think I could take my breathing getting any worse than it already is.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and anyone from the UK who has undergone or knows about how the surgery goes and risks with how we do it over here would be really helpful also.

Thanks in advance!

7-days post op.

Hello all, I’m 7 days post op from a septoplasty.

About an hour after having my splints removed my nose started bleeding randomly in the car drive home from the doctor’s office. I was able to stop the bleeding but I felt a clot get stuck in the back of my throat. I kinda freaked out so I pushed it out the best I can it felt like I was choking on it. I got the bleeding to stop after about 10-15 minutes then it started again. Stopped for a while then another clot got dislodged and it bled again for a while. Finally done bleeding now it’s been dribbling out for a few hours just kinda worried about what to do next. My other nostril is perfectly fine and I can breathe okay through it. My right nostril is the one that was bleeding and I can’t really breathe through it from all the blood crust.

How long should I wait to do the sinus rinse?

Thanks for any help. Still waiting for a response from my dr.

Do I have a deviated septum?

I saw a video of myself and was like oh my shits uneven as hell. if I pinch it I feel like I can literally feel disconnected chunks of cartilage. I also do have troubles breathing and falling asleep bc I can’t breathe righ sometimes. U think I could get insurance covered surgery? Im on my parents signa insurance if that matters.

I included a candid pic where I just noticed how bad it looked randomly, and one I took just now.

Also if you do think I have one, what do you think caused it? I don’t remember any specific times I got hit in the nose or anything rly hard but I did play soccer and basketball so anythings possible.

Idk anything about this really so sorry if I’m being annoying/repetitive in this sub 😃 Also I’m drunk posting rn sorry if I sound cray cray

Also I have some medical ocd/hypochondriac type thoughts sometimes so that may have fueled this post: disclaimer 😭

Is revision septoplasty worth it in my case? (Residual deviation + Inferior turbinate hypertrophy)

I had a septoplasty done a few years ago, unfortunately lost the medical documents surrounding it. My septum was severely deviated in both ways, and my right nostril had probably 99% blockage with the left one being quite blocked too. I did topical anesthetic which was a huge mistake, maybe it was psychological, but I was stressed throughout, and I felt pain even though I was assured I shouldn't be feeling pain. If I do get a revision septoplasty, it will definitely be under general anesthesia.

A few years later and nose breathing is still quite hard, my septum is still deviated to the right. But the worst issue is I have inferior turbinate hypertrophy. Nothing seems to really be able to get it under control, and I am terrified of ENS so don't think I'll ever mess around with them.

Main points from CT scan (translated from Polish)

  • Residual rightward deviation/bulging of the nasal septum, especially in the front bony part
  • Enlarged inferior nasal turbinates
  • The right inferior turbinate lies close to the septal bulge, which narrows the airway
  • The left middle turbinate is described as briefly touching / adhering to the septum

Also allergy tests have ruled out allergy.

My hope is, after consulting some people informally and researching online, that the inferior turbinate hypertrophy is compensatory and will restore itself after the septum deviation is fixed. https://djm.uodiyala.edu.iq/index.php/djm/article/view/443

Has anyone had success with doing this? The septoplasty probably needs to be done anyway but has anyone managed to reverse their turbinate hypertrophy with just a septoplasty?

pressure in nose and crookedness

hii guys i didn’t really know where to post this and what my point is either, but basically my nose is literally so big AND CROOKED. like u can see so clearly where the bone starts curving in a weird angle. and i can’t tell if im just being hypersensitive but i feel like i can feel the presence of my nose so much and like the pressure of it? i have a moderate deviated septum as well which ik causes sinus pressure as well so that is definitely contributing, but can the actual crookeness cause discomfort?

Ear pain and headaches

Anyone else experience ear pressure and pain a month out of surgery? It’s driving me nuts and I’m getting a lot of headaches. Wondering if anyone can give me a timeline on when it got better for them.
