As the subject says… where would you grab lunch before/after several hours walking around the Huntington? Thinking Pasadena, San Marino, South Pas, Alhambra, or around that area. To-go, quick service, or casual dining preferred.

I know there is a tea room on site and it looks beautiful, but that’s a tad spendier and more formal than I’m looking to experience for this particular casual weekday meal.

Thank you!

food in sgv and gentrification

i love boba but it’s at the point it’s too much. has anyone found it crazy that so many boba shops/cafes opened between 2024-2026? same concept and taste, and it’s price point is $7 per cup. plus the restaurants that sell the same thing and interior is modern and sad. and i can’t forget about the tawa plaza, ughhhh! it makes me miss when people would just run mom and pop shops with personality. but i understand that this is what people want and rent is high. so ive been going to og spots here and there because i fear they will close down.

The Happy Lemon spot on Baldwin Ave is turning into a brand new poke place called Unreal Poke 🐟 (@unrealpoke)

Kinda hyped because we need more Hawaiian poke options in the 626. Super excited for fresh fish, good portions, and solid flavors 🙏

They’ve actually been a pop-up that shows up at Smorgasburg LA, Coachella, etc., band now they’re getting a storefront 👀

EDIT: Not affiliated, just excited to see this new small business open in the area 😊

If you are craving Chinese, and haven’t tried Jumbo Chinese Food in La Puente you’re missing out. I keep coming back for the Thai tea, it’s a really strong Thai flavored tea. I also love the chow mein and orange chicken. It’s my go to order here and it’s not as expensive for a combo like that. The workers there also fill the box and it’s really bang for your buck. I recommend that you try it out if you’re in the area.

Bakery/ Cafe Recommends

I got inspired by La Bakery Walks to do a bakery bike ride. I trying to figure out a route starting from Pasadena doing a 50 mile loop and ending back at Pasadena. I found some places on the western side of SGV. So I would like recommendations for bakeries/ cafes, specific items to buy, especially savory items because I don’t think I can eat sweets the whole ride.

EDIT: I’m trying to find 5 bakery to stop every 10 or so miles.

Upscale Places in the SGV?

Hey all, I find the SGV to be food heaven but most of the places are pretty casual. Where would you take someone for amazing east asian cuisine in the SGV that is more upscale for a special occasion, date, etc?

Update: found Chinese grilled whole fish at Liu Roast Fish

Posted a few days ago looking for a place that did Chinese-style whole grilled fish. Thank you to this sub and the Food Los Angeles sub for recommending Liu Roast Fish in San Gabriel!

We paid about $130 total for the fish, a beef noodle soup (for the kid), a steamed bun, and a plum soda.

The fish is sea bass in the mala sauce (medium spice level) with soft tofu, tofu skin, potatoes, winter melon, wood ear, enoki, and shrimp. It’s a lot of fish - I think they said 2.5 pounds, so you might get one big fish or two smaller fish to get to that amount.

The fish was great! My only complaint about it was that the mala sauce had cumin seeds which I wasn’t really expecting and don’t really like. So next time I’d probably try one of the other spicy sauce options. It’s also a big portion and we were just 2 adults. The people next to us were a group of 6 splitting it. It’s probably best for something like 4 people. We tried our best but could not finish it 😅. The beef noodle soup was not good in our opinion but our kid ate it.

Ordering is via iPad or QR code. I think they have an English menu but my husband is a native Mandarin speaker so we had no issues. Was pretty empty when we arrived and was moderately busy by the time we left.

Coming to the old Beard Papa location next to Arcadia Garden Cafe on Baldwin. Tiny spot. Probably good boba.

I thought having Molly Tea was nice but I got bored of their menu after a few months. Glad to see Auntea Jenny coming. I tried the one in San Gabriel and really liked their grape drink. But such a tiny building!

Looking for Chinese grilled whole fish

Looking for a Chinese restaurant that specializes in grilled whole fish, preferably the kind where you can customize the sauce and toppings. Sichuan Impression in Alhambra has one version, but it's not customizable.

First discovered this style of fish while traveling in China several years ago and have been craving it ever since. The only place in the US I've seen it is a small chain called Hot Space on the east coast.

I also asked on the Food Los Angeles sub, and someone recommended Meet U BBQ in San Gabriel. Anywhere else?
