Hummer EV review for those that care

Just finished a week with a Hummer EV rental. Currently own a G1 R1T and G2 R1S. Have long been curious about the Hummer and had chose to rent one this past week in SoCal. Overall, didn’t hate it but didn’t love it. Thought maybe the Hummer eV truck would have been a fun Swiss Army knife in lieu of the R1T given you could pop the top off. But this week confirmed, for me, that I prefer the Rivian. It would make a great beach or lake vehicle but not a daily.

The Good:

- Bose sound system was very strong

- frunk is spacious

- 4 wheel steering is awesome (didn’t use crab walk)

- back window comes down, top comes off

The OK:

- super cruise is just behind Gen2 hands free. Not bad but too aggressive and gets itself into bad spots. You have to intervene too much.

- it’s smooth at speed but that’s deceptive if you hit a big bump or turn hard. Feels like an old Cadillac

- looks both good and dopey at the same time. At times I felt foolish driving it

- interior was ok but busy. Lots of buttons and UI was convoluted

- good pick up for a huge car, but it was reminiscent of opening the throttle on a boat. The front raised up comically high

The Bad:

- it’s annoying huge. Bad sight lines

- windshield is tiny

- hard to see out of up front, sides, and back

- sensors, sensors, sensors. It was constantly chirping and beeping.

- lost identity. Felt like the product didn’t know if it was an eV or an ice vehicle.

- entry/exit suspension had a mind of its own. Everyone had to crawl out of it. Was annoying to watch the car lower as we walked away after parking

Spotted an R2 on the highway today. I didn’t realize they were out unwrapped yet!

This was on I-40 in Oklahoma City. It pulled it off to go to the Rivian charger. I waved at the driver as I passed in my R1S.

It looks great! I almost thought it was an R1S at first but noticed the back was slightly different.

R1T Bed Rack

Saw someone else post some success with one of the universal racks from Amazon and decided to try my hand at one and see if I could make it fit. Picked this one up for $200 on Amazon. Had to spend some time with an angle grinder to get an over hang piece off, but then just attached with a couple u bolts.

Right now it covers most of my buttons with a bit of the tailgate one sticking out far enough to use. Probably going to Dremel out the others at some point but for now the phone and buttons on the truck will do fine.

Was looking for something to put my iKamper on but will also work for a kayak while using with the regular cross bars. Adjustable height so can put them up higher or lower with a little rachet work.

It's a solid rack but reviews aren't stellar because apparently the paint peels and it rusts up. Hit it with several coats of Rust‑Oleum in advance so we'll see how it holds up!

I took this video for me...then realized other folks might benefit from it!
Hopefully it's helpful!

Autonomy+ Trial Expired

After giving it a go with too many critical failures, prompts to put my hands back on the wheel for relatively minor curves, having to retake control as UHF drove over lines in the road or straight towards big potholes, etc. I’m letting the trial lapse and moving on. The reliability is too low, it feels more stressful feeling like I need to babysit UHF, I don’t trust it to safely navigate common scenarios in traffic and more generally, and find the price too high for something other brands charge nothing for as it’s currently little more than advanced lane keeping.

I appreciate that Rivian is integrating lidar in future builds which should allow for some true autonomy but unless they’re able to greatly improve the current implementation for Gen 2 I don’t expect it to ever be a realistic option worth the expense for my current R1S. Thankfully it’s a great vehicle without this feature set so no big loss, but somewhat annoying they’re asking $50/mo or a large one-time non-transferable payment for something that doesn’t currently feel ready for prime time.

Our Autonomy+ expired. On Highway Assist. Hands-on lane centering works fine on highways

Just a data point. Back to normal highway assist. Hands-on lane centering works fine on the highways I travel. Ymmv.

This is all I need. I don’t see myself paying for Autonomy+ any time soon.

Invested in seeing Rivian succeed

I bought the Autonomy+ for my ride forever. It's my money, my choice, and my opinion that this is an investment in the future of Rivian. I'll be happy if they charge less for others in the future but have the feeling it's just going to get more expensive over time. I would be happy to be wrong about that point.

I'm enjoying my spicy driving and lane changes. The ability to have this on unmapped roads with a Gen 2 has been pretty incredible and I missed it as soon as it disappeared. There will surely be more to come so I got in on the ground floor and will ride the elevator up or down.

I respect everyone's personal position on this transaction and am not trying to sell others on it.

You had better be glad you have a Rivain EV. Gas just hit $9.99/gallon in Big Sur California.

Did it. Currently have (and happy with) a 2022 MYP, but I definitely like the R2 style (and the Launch Edition), and hoping the technology catches up soon. Looking like the pieces are in place.

Any thoughts/comparisons from those who've made a similar move are welcome.

PSA Don't Drive Over a RR Spike

Was out hiking in the mountains today and drove on a long road that was originally a railroad. Turns out some guy who took up the rails a hundred years ago forgot a spike. Thank God we had a spare because no way fix a flat was sealing that!

This afternoon I was harshly reminded that UHF is not a finished product

This afternoon driving the family in our 2026 R1S on the freeway. Clear sunny day. Light traffic but everyone moving at 65-70mph. Had UHF engaged.

Then suddenly when passing under an overpass, the visualizer thought the shadow of the overpass was a car located sideways in the lane. Abruptly flashed a red steering wheel to take over and hard hit the brakes itself. Probably dropped 20mph before I was able to quickly push the gas (to avoid being hit from behind) and take over.

Absolutely nothing in the road except a shadow.

Been using the UHF to and from work, stop and go traffic for a while now. Always cautious especially when cars nearby seem to be doing erratic things. But this was the most scary and frankly dangerous behavior I’ve ever seen. Can’t see how this is approved by regulators for mass public use in this state. Clearly a beta product that needs troubleshooting in a closed course.

And trust me. I’m sad to made this conclusion because I absolutely love the car.

R1S/R2 vs Land Rover Defender

Coming from a Tesla Model Y and looking for a new family car. We’re a couple with one kid and a dog. Mainly looking for: a bit more space, and some basic off-roading capabilities for camping and going to the mountains (clearance, traction, all-terrain tires, etc).

I’m very much in between a Rivian, either a gently used R1S or an R2, or a Land Rover Defender 110. Honestly, I like the idea of the Land Rover more, but I’m concern of two things: coming from EVs, the old tech will probably suck and frustrate me; plus we use dog mode a lot in our daily lives, and I think I’d miss it.

Thoughts? Has anyone owned both cars or gone from one to another and can share their experience?

Thanks so much!

Popping near front tires as I turn

I recently got all my tires changed at local big chain tire shop that I don’t want to call out yet. Right before that, Rivian replaced front hub and shaft. After about a 120 miles driving post-tire change, there’s popping noises as I turn coming from the front.

Looking for advice if anyone has gone through a similar scenario. I am concerned the blame would be on the tire shop and I would eat the cost.

Kuat SR Rivian Specific Bike Rack - Issues

Anyone else actually buy these racks?
I think the design is great, as it sits right in the rack and uses the rack design to make install and take off super easy. Unfortunately the specific pieces that are used to attach the rack to the cross bars seem like they have serious issues. I received the original that came with the rack and one of the levers was so loose that it will not hold anything and there is no way to adjust it, and the other lever split apart during the first removal. Rivian pointed me to Kuat who was very good to deal with and they sent a replacement right away. Th replace actually showed up broken and missing one of the little screws.
Did I just run into some really really bad luck or have others had similar problems? I thought I was buying quality with Kuat, now, not so sure.
