Workingman's Dead on tape

Arrived today. Impeccable transfer. Sounds just exactly perfect. This 1991 Otari MX-55 tape deck is one of four I acquired from Lucasfilm last year. If you haven't discovered tape yet, come on in the water's great. Portland Deadheads are invited to stop in for a listen 🌈⚡

CD's to Tape: Quality?

I'm waiting for my new and first reel to reel machine to arrive off ebay. Quick question I didn't see answered here.

If you just 'burn' a copy of a cd to tape, how can the sound quality be superior if the source material is a cd? I've heard people saying that, once it's on tape, the quality is better.

do you believe this, if so, how is that possible?

Tape twists during reverse playback.

I have a Teac A-4300 deck that I am experiencing a strange issue with. During reverse playback the tape twists between the pinch roller and the head causing terrible playback. During forward play there are no issues with the tape twisting. This is a reverse play problem only. Any idea as to what may be causing this?

My daddy passed in October. Cleaning things out. Would anyone know the specifics of this?

Good times

This Mozart recording was at my local record shop poked away in a corner and I got it for ten bucks

No 7 inch take up reels in house, hope this is not sacrilegious.

All this at a thrift shop for $20. Made sure to test the machine out and it works just fine. Any recommendations on maintenance for it to keep it up and running?

I purchased this rig from a studio in southern CT over a year ago with the intent to transfer seven studio master tapes I have dating from 1978 through 1985. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of recording some new material on the rig.

I integrated it with Pro Tools via four Digidesign 192 interfaces, two for 24 A/D conversion and two for 24 D/A conversion. Initially used an Allen & Heath GL4000 as a console to mix on, however I also have a Soundtracs CM4400 32 channel desk that I use interchangeably depending on the session.

I have the original binder manual as well as the build sheet on rice paper from Otari, dating to December 29, 1980 with the QA checklist signed off by “Matamoto”.

This deck has been used to mix the first Cosby Show album back in the 1980s, as well as a myriad of other bands in the northern NJ region during its use at a recording complex with it’s first owner. It arrived at the CT studio with an Earth, Wind, and Fire studio master on it. Pretty sweet!

I bought a lot

Thanks for reading! I have sadly been idle with expanding my collection of reel-to-reel tapes since getting my Teac last spring and winning a lot of ~30 home recorded reels from the early 80's. It included college radio excerpts from a college on the Minnesota/North Dakota border. Yesterday I bid on a series of four lots from a music store that closed a couple of decades ago in rural South Dakota, and I made the 4-hour round trip to pick it up. There's a huge amount of smaller 5-inch tapes and I haven't seen any tapes susceptible to sticky shed, but there are some gems that I can't wait to dive into. I spent ~$140USD in total and I don't have a final count of reels or a sense of timeframe or programming.

Free to good home

An old man gave me this reel to reel for $2. I can't get it to work and it's beyond my capability or means to fix it. It's a Sony TC 200 free to anyone who can pick it up in the Tyler TX area.

What would you record?

Recently came across about ten extra 10.5" reels. I normally record 7 1/2 ips on 7" reels. Got me thinking if you only had ten reels to record at 15ips what would you record? I've got my ideas but curious to see what the responses are.

If anyone has ever wondered how to play a tape the „non boring” way, here is an easy tutorial on how to add some echo. 😆

Step 1: you need two reel to reel tape recorders

Step 2: position them in a specific way to ensure a safe transport of the tape from a machine to the other (make sure that the tape isn't rubbing on something that isn't supposed to)

Step 3: guide the tape carefully, put the supply reel on the supply gear of the first machine and the take-up reel on the take-up gear on the second machine.

Step 4: press/turn the play button/key at the same time on the both machines (if not, the tape will become stretched, or will snap)

Step 5: eNJoy 😁

Goodwill pickup maintenance.

Picked this up for 70 bucks and a 20 dollar reel at the local record store to try it out, record works great and everything for that matter so far however....when I'm playing or recording once the tape is on the last 30% or so I have pitch issues. From what I guess is the motor capacitors may need replaced. Anyone have any experience with this player?

I don’t really know much about these things but I just got this akai gx-747 for free. I’m not sure if it’s working right though. The video shows what it does when I turn it on. Is this worth anything?

u/donutdude22 — 13 days ago

I just recently got my hands on an Akai 1722ii.

My aim is to record my final mixes to the tape, but I’m having some issues.

I can get the sound to come through, I can see the meters jumping, and it looks like it’s recording. But when I playback I hear nothing, or it’s very very very low.

Am I overlooking something?

Do I need to string the tape differently?

And finally, is there still value in me just running the sound thru the machine and back out — basically just using it for color?

How are y’all incorporating it if the recording mechanism doesn’t work?

Both given to me , mechanically work, don't have tape to see if they record

How to remove this piece due to squeaking?

Completely new to reel to reel, just loaded my first reel and played it through an amp. But I noticed the right hand side reel was squeaking badly, and when I twisted the (spindle?) it seems to be the problem. I figured taking it off and applying a bit of oil would help lubricate it but when I pull at it, feels like I may break something.

This is an Akai X-5000W works beautifully, has a squeaky problem

I don't know much about rtr machines but I've always been interested in recording/bouncing music to a taperecorder. So, when I saw this Sony TC-255 at the thrift, I had to get it. After bringing it home, I noticed that when I turn the lever for FWD/REW, the dials spin momentarily and then stops. From my limited knowledge, these dials should spin for longer?

Assuming the machine works/can be fixed, is there any point in using it for recording/master bouncing?
