Asheville as the downhill skateboarding Mecca

There’s many reasons that led to North Carolina being established as a downhill hotspot. We can look back to the 1989 North Carolina Highway Trust Fund paving program that was a massive push to pave remaining dirt and gravel secondary roads. The 2008 housing market crash gave way to a swath of undeveloped and abandoned neighborhoods.

For us, a simple but clear example is how you can leave your front door and be at the top of a world class downhill descent in a matter of fifteen to twenty minutes.

If you look back through the North Carolina Downhill Skateboarding (NCDH) archive, you will find that one of our favorite things to capture is our local crew ripping through beautiful Appalachia.

Enjoy this clip from our new 14-minute film that you can view here: https://youtu.be/0BiGLCfB01g?si=r6n84zEonohE8yHS

*We had spotters and walkie talkie systems for these descents. Eyes and ears all over the road with communication and safety protocols.

Would you move to NC if you weren't already living there?

Hi everyone! My husband and I are currently living in New Mexico, and we’ve been seriously considering relocating to North Carolina, specifically the Durham area. My husband’s job has an office there, so transferring would be pretty straightforward for us.

We’re a young couple hoping to start a family soon, and we’re really looking for more of a rural, small-town lifestyle rather than city living. From the research I’ve done so far, I’ve been especially interested in the Roxboro area because we love the idea of having some land, being outdoors more, and eventually raising our kids in a quieter environment.

Neither of us have actually visited NC yet, but we definitely plan to before making any decisions. I’d love to hear from people who live there:

  • What’s it really like living in that area?
  • What are the biggest pros and cons?
  • If you didn’t already live in NC, is it somewhere you’d consider moving to?

One of the biggest reasons we’re looking to leave where we currently live is the crime rate. Safety and having a good environment to raise children in are really important to us, so hearing firsthand experiences would mean a lot.

Thanks in advance for any advice or insight!

Is there any Republican member of Congress that will do their job?

The members of the House and the Senate from North Carolina have been very quite while Trump is stealing and wasting the taxes that the citizens of this state have paid to the federal government. Congress is supposed to be in charge of the "purse", but they've been quit instead of protecting the money that has been entrusted to them.

Is anyone else flabbergasted at how useless the NC delegates are?

Update: Bubba is still waiting. He is 13 years old, 106 lbs, and deaf. This gentle soul is still waiting for his forever home! 💔🐾

Hey everyone, checking back in for my friend who is fostering Bubba through Orange County Animal Services. He is still looking for his forever home, and we are hoping that by sharing this, the right person will finally see him.

Please don't let his age or his size fool you, now that he’s been settling into foster care, my friend has discovered that he is honestly the easiest, most low-maintenance dog you could ever ask for.

What it’s actually like living with Bubba:

  • The Perfect Cafe Partner: My friend took him out to Velvet Taco and he is an absolute dream. Because he’s deaf, the busy noises and clinking dishes didn't phase him at all. He didn't try to sniff people's plates, he just chilled and eventually went to sleep under the table.
  • Flawless House Manners: He has had zero bathroom accidents at my friend's house. Not a single one. He has perfect manners indoors, doesn't chew a thing, and just wants to find a cool tile floor or a cozy rug to park himself on.
  • Loyal to a Fault: He has absolutely no interest in escaping or running away. The door was accidentally left open the other day, and instead of bolting, Bubba just stood politely at the threshold waiting for my friend. He just wants to be where his people are.
  • Simple Pleasures: His daily checklist is simple: eat his food, drink his water, go for a slow "sniff-walk" (he loves dipping his paws in the water!), and sleep. He doesn't pull on the leash and is incredibly gentle.

Because he lives in a world of total quiet, he won't bark at the mailman or get scared of thunderstorms. He does need a quick, helpful boost to get into the car since his back legs are a little older, and he needs a home without cats.

Bubba is a senior Lab/Pointer mix who is ready to be the ultimate, easygoing companion for a quiet household or a retired couple.

Even if you can’t adopt, please share. It only takes one share for the right person to see him. Let’s get this sweet boy the forever couch he deserves!

🐾 Shelter ID: A251016 (Orange County Animal Services)

📍 Location: Raleigh / Chapel Hill / Orange County, NC

The General Assembly is trying to disguise a power grab as a tax cut. Don’t fall for it!

There will likely be several proposed constitutional amendments on your ballot this November, but this one is particularly insidious.

Inside the North Carolina GOP’s Decade-Long Push to Seize Power From the State’s Democratic Governors

Let's not ever EVER forget who the true devil in NC really is: the GOP running this state!

From the article:

  • Two weeks after Stein's win, the North Carolina legislature’s Republican supermajority fast-tracked a bill that would transform the balance of power in the state.

  • lawmakers have attempted to transfer control or partial control of at least 29 boards, entities or important executive powers. In most cases, they succeeded.

  • Republicans now hold increased sway not only over North Carolina’s election board, but also over its schools, building codes, environmental regulations, coastal development, wildlife management, utilities, cabinet appointments and more. All had previously been under control of the governor.

  • North Carolina Republican legislative leaders didn’t respond to interview requests or detailed emailed questions from ProPublica about the power shifts. In the past, Republicans have defended whittling down Democratic governors’ authority by pointing to similarly partisan moves by Democrats decades ago, though these were on a much smaller scale.

So in summary, ever since Gov. Stein won the election, the Republicans were too busy making sure he has barely any power or say about what they do. In all, the Republicans cheated their way into more power and more authority. Is that the standard NC is going to have to deal with permanently? I sure hope not.. that'll be the literal death of NC.

Even though this article is months old at this point - this should still be our mission here in NC:

We need to vote these vile GOP politicians out of office!

Bald Head Island Logistics

We rented a house on BHI for 5 nights for us to celebrate my 40th w some close friends/fam. I am aware it’s not a crazy party spot - I love the no cars, laid back vibe and just wanna hang on the beach during the day, hit somewhere for dinner/drinks then hang at the house and play games & drink beers in the evening.

I’m looking for tips and suggestions for transporting things from the “mainland” to the island. I was there once and saw the stores are very limited so I assume we should bring as much as we can w us?

Also, parking for the ferry. We’re driving in from Charlotte, is the parking at the ferry charged daily? Free? Etc

NC Teachers and State Employees

At least the Legislature is currently working on slashing taxes even more due to the State having so much money to help fund basic social infrastructure instead of passing a budget that's a year overdue. /s

Sportbike Tires Near Nags Head, NC?

Hi, I'm on vacation far from home and looking for somewhere that could do an emergency front tire replacement tomorrow on my Yamaha R6. I can limp it to Elizabeth City if I have to I think, but would prefer to do it around Nags Head. I know there are Harley dealerships, but it seems like cruiser tires are completely different. Anyone know anything?

Mt Airy restaurant recommendations

My girlfriend and I are going to the Hillsville Flea Market on Friday and spending the night near Mount Airy on Thursday.

We are looking for any recommendations for dinner on Thursday night. We realize organic farm to table selections are nonexistence, but any good restaurants or food trucks around?

MISSING PERSON

I am hoping someone can help us locate my cousin who has been reported as a missing person. He is not from Greensboro, North Carolina, but that is his last known location. His car was impounded with his phone inside, and he is without his medication. This individual responds to the name, Zach or Zachary, and his family/ friends love him and want to help him. Please approach with both caution and compassion, as he has CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) injuries from sports; he is known to experience suicidal thoughts and ideation. Zach has the a beautiful heart and he’s also made some mistakes, and his family strongly suspects he’s running from them. Please comment or message me if you have any indication of where he might be. We have family that are boots on the ground down there the last couple of days.

Zachary Prettyman, we love you, let’s get you more support. Contact anyone in your family, please, we are waiting and ready to listen.

Editing post with more info:

Zach is on a family plan, and his mom can see there’s been no phone activity since ~5 pm Friday.

Asked to leave Refuel gas station on Summit Ave at 7 am Saturday. (Loitering for hours.)

5 pm Saturday he called his step-dad from what we believe to be Guilford County Walk-In Mental health clinic. When family went there they said he did not stay.

Edit: He has been found!!!! Zach reached out to his mom from a hospital where he checked himself in. Hopefully they can help him stay long enough to heal up and make choices independently and intelligently ✌️💛🙏**🏼 thank you to everyone who reached out with kind words and useful information and anyone who was out there vibing or praying for him to be located without harm to himself or anyone els**e.
