the safe act is just torture tell me how you guys even survive here

im already two months into trying to figure out what i can build and what i cant, in new york these laws are so confusing that its easier to just buy a crossbow and not stress, but no i need that m16 vibe but also make sure the sheriff doesnt show up. i have an old lower from pre ban times, i think its legal, bought it in another state when i lived there, its serialized and all, but the fact i brought it here is a grey area, who knows maybe they shoot you for that or maybe not anyway i decided im gonna build anyway, but not standard 223, something either louder or quieter, like 300 blackout for a suppressor or 450 bushmaster for a bear if needed, but in ny i dont know about bears either

started looking where to buy an upper, local shops sell some crap for a grand, came across a site, just scrolling to see whats out there

but the problem isnt shipping its that we have our own bullshit here, like whats the rule about pistol grips? i forgot, the safe act says you cant have two features at once like detachable mag and pistol grip is trouble, but if you have a fixed mag then i guess its ok, but a fixed mag sucks you load from the top, my head hurts

maybe someone built something here that works using an upper from another state, tell me how you checked compliance, that site ar15 parts i saw they have mags for 6.8 spc and 7.62x39, but we have 10 round cap so you gotta block them thats a whole other story

so if anyone from ny is reading this and also suffering through this idiocy - hit me up, tell me if you built something based on an upper for 350 legend or 6.5 grendel, where you got parts and how you made sure you dont get locked up because your barrel weight is wrong or some other crap

p.s. sorry for the mess, just pissed that you cant build the gun you like because of politicians who dont know shit about firearms . thanks

Widespread confusion regarding semi-auto permit in NY

There seems to be widespread confusion regarding the semi-auto permit in NY. The law is clear: you need a semi-auto permit to purchase or take possession of a semi-auto rifle in NY. Just like how you need a handgun permit to purchase or possess a handgun in NY. That also includes simply owning or possessing all the parts to put together a semi-auto rifle (constructive possession, lots of legal precedent in NY). So yes, if you want to buy a semi-auto rifle in NY, you need the semi-auto permit. If you want to make one on your own, and BUY all the necessary parts to make a semi-auto rifle, you need the semi-auto rifle permit as soon as you purchase or are gifted or even build on your own, the final piece necessary to have a functioning semi-auto rifle. That's the law, and that's how a judge will see it.

However, no permit is required until you have all the parts for a working semi-auto rifle. So legally you can buy the lower receiver of an AR without a permit. Or just buy the upper receiver. Or even buy the lower receiver and upper receiver IF it comes without a BGC.

And no, buying a semi-auto from a neighboring state does not absolve you of these laws, as the permit is required as soon as you step foot in NY.

Folks need to also consider: what is the most likely interpretation and understanding by cops, judges and prosecutors? It think its safe to say all three would agree with what I have written. Sure, you can sue and go all the way up to the Supreme Court but you will pay tons of $$$ in legal fees and maybe face some jail time.

Edit: yes it is true that my interpretation and understanding may be wrong, but I think mine is the more safest theory to go by. To each their own.

Ordering a lower, or an upper is not a rifle until it's assembled, right?

Does that mean if a cop stops someone and somehow sees they have a rifle in the car, but it happens to be separated.. They can't say anything?

Just asking out of curiosity. Wondering if that's true how does anyone ever get caught with an unregistered (besides those caught actually using it)

Legally acquiring semi automatic rifle (at all, not just NYS) without pistol permit?

So, my understanding for rifles is that you only need the permit to purchase a semi automatic rifle, and that merely possessing them is fine without the permit. I don't really have an interest in pistols, but will be getting my permit... Eventually. You know, wait times etc.

I am close to both Ohio and Pennsylvania, and will be visiting family in North Carolina in a few months. So my question is this, is there any legal way for me to acquire a semiautomatic rifle without having a pistol permit? Not even anything extravagent, just like a 10/22 or maybe a lower receiver.

Holster or even gun recommendations

As summer approaches, I’m looking for some CCW recommendations.

I normally carry a SIG Sauer P365 XL at the 3 o’clock position, but I’m struggling to conceal it well under just a T-shirt. I’ve tried appendix carry, but it’s really uncomfortable for me.

I’m relatively skinny — 5’7” and about 130 lbs — so printing becomes an issue pretty easily.

Looking for holster recommendations or possible a completely different pistol for summer. Open to different positions/options. Thanks.

Artemis

Random inquiry: I have my full carry license and want to hit the range. Could one of my buddies (un-licensed) come with?

Specifically Artemis range in Elmsford or Blue Mountain in Peekskill.

Thanks

Stopped into Firearms Training Academy today in Green Island, NY. Took a look around the shop before hitting the range to shoot a new gun. Saw a case full of suppressors, since I’m not from here I mentioned that I thought suppressors were completely illegal in NY. The staff said it was just for law enforcement, which prompted a follow up question from me which is that I thought NY Safe Act exemptions were only for equipment that was used in the scope of your job as law enforcement. The fella behind the counter was clearly offended because he said that “well when you’re getting shot at all day, you deserve to get a couple extra perks, I could get you an application if you want” I thought this was an interesting response, with many implications. When instances like this come up, I often think about that quote “Tyranny is defined as that which is legal for the government but illegal for the citizenry”. Even if the quote is mis-attributed, it still rings true. Is this a common occurrence here in NY? I’ve been to many gun shops in the Capital Region, and this is the only one I’ve encountered actually run by open statists.

Yes 5.56 is about as good as it gets and ARs are the platform for it.

But in this state they can be annoying to own. So how many of you rock a semi-auto that isn’t an AR?
- what is it and what caliber is it in?

Tourists from different country

Question, are tourists from different country allowed to rent and shoot guns?

I know they are not allowed to rent pistols, they can shoot longs guns.

Also, is there any good gun range to rent in Long Island?

I have a mini-14 but it’s super unreliable, I have feeding issues basically every time I take it out and magazines cost an arm and a leg. Any alternatives in 5.56? Prefer semi auto and detachable magazines.

Edit: also, about how much should I expect to pay for a decent rifle?

2nd generation Colt SAA near Hudson Valley?

Hey guys. I live in Orange County. Every once in a while I watch Hickok45 pull out all of his Colts and I get an itch to own one. I was wondering if there are any shops out there that the community may know of that stocks the 3rd generation models, or perhaps somewhere I might get lucky finding a secondhand 2nd generation in good condition for a good deal.

Transferring pistols long distance

A relative of mine is getting old and wants to gift his pistols to me. We both live in NY but we’re several hours apart. What would be the easiest way to transfer his pistols to me? We both have permits in our respective counties.

As of right now my plan is to drive down to his area, find a nearby FFL to initiate the transfer, drive back home to have the pistols added to my permit, then drive back to his area to take possession of the pistols. I’m hoping there’s an easier solution to this that doesn’t involve so much driving?

Can I carry ammo and pistols in the same range bag?

I reside in Suffolk County. When transporting my pistols to and from the range, may I carry both the unloaded pistols and ammunition in the same range bag if:

  • each pistol is unloaded and secured in its own locked hard case, and
  • the ammunition is stored in the manufacturer’s box?

I want to confirm whether this method of transport complies with New York State and Suffolk County requirements.

HK vp9

Caught myself staring at an HK vp9 about a week ago while I was waiting 2,000hrs for an ammo background check. Felt amazing in my hands and read a lot about it, but haven’t really asked anyone myself so anyone own a vp9 and if so what’s some pros and cons you’ve come across? I’d be looking to use this as an EDC if it out performs my g43x
