Let’s see some of your favorite vintage toy digs!

It’s a vintage 1950s-1960s toy cap gun derringer (specifically a Hubley Halco “Diamond H” model or very close Leslie-Henry variant made for Halco distribution).

I'll take it as a good luck charm!

Took out my brand new Vanquish 460 after practising in the garden for an hour or two. It was pasture land with quite a lot of longish grass. If anything i was getting returns everywhere. Digging loads, and just getting lots of old farming litter.

Decided to start heading back to the field entrance and got a hit a little different to the others that had all been wire. It confused the hell out of me after i dug it as i couldn't find it, even though the pinpointer was going nuts...turned out to be the tiny head of a nail rolling around with the other bits of dirt.

I was then done for the evening but had another return just next to it...though ok one last hole and hit a massive piece of metal that looked like a rock.

It was the shoe.

I wonder if the nailhead was from the shoe..it looks like it. It funny if i found that tiny part first and its lead me to the massive hunk of metal after.

Im now really tired and dirty. Its tougher than i thought...nobody mentioned that! Made sure i took everything and filled every hole.

Will be back there tomorrow.

Found in South West England. Think it could possibly be from a Roman brooch?

I have been using the Garrett as my first detector for nearly a year now (with the upgraded larger Nel Tornado coil). I have found some great things with it, but I am aware that it is considered very out of date and a budget detector. My main question is what difference would I actually notice with a more expensive and modern detector? I love the hobby and I am willing to invest in it, but at the same time I don’t want to be just spending money for the sake of it.

My main complaint with the Garrett is that the discrimination isn’t the best - e.g silver and foil/aluminium usually give the exact same signal, so you end up digging a lot of junk. Have the newer machines overcome this problem?

Would I actually be able to find more with a more expensive machine? On one event I was at I was able to find a tiny Roman silver coin with the Garrett in the exact same spot which had been searched over and missed by a more experienced detectorist with an XP Deus II - Pure luck? Or proof that the old Garrett is just as good?

Finally took my first step into metal detecting today with a Minelab Go-Find 66. Was actually given the detector, so before I get any stick from the serious detectorists 😄

I’ve decided to use it at home while I practice my swing and learn the basics before eventually passing it down to my 10 year old daughter and upgrading to something newer myself.

I’m in Northfleet, very close to the Thames and not far from Springhead and the old line of Watling Street, so there’s a ridiculous amount of history around here.

My house was built around 1929, but after looking at historic maps from 1892–1914, it turns out the garden sits alongside what looks to have been an old access path running through orchard / managed grounds connected to Northfleet House, which was apparently once a large mansion with extensive grounds before the area was developed into housing.

I've randomly dug up partial clay pipes which would pre-date my house/garden whilst building my garden office but today I finally swung the detector properly over the garden (making sure the neighbours couldn't see me embarrassing myself) and one of the first decent repeatable signals turned out to be a 1941 halfpenny… in the same hole as an old nail.

I've told myself that If I find silver in the garden, that’s my excuse to commit to a brand new Minelab Vanquish 560 😄 but let's face it I’m completely hooked already and will probably lower that benchmark lol. Garden needed a refresh anyway...

Also joined the National Council for Metal Detecting this week, so now I’m eyeing up every field and old map in Kent and trying to sweet talk every farmer/stable owner in the vicinity.

Council land permission

Hi I am looking to get into metal detecting I love local history but there is good land around me that is out the way of people (not farm land), would you still seek permission even tho you are not likely to be stopped while detecting because of how out the way it is?.

How likely are councils to give permissions?

I will be seeking permision on farm land, but I dont see the point in asking for permission on council land that is out the way.

Has anyone else done something like this?

Any advice is appreciated.

Anyone know any details/age?

New to this but a few days in now.

Loads of horseshoe's and junk but dug this beauty a little earlier. Ive cleaned it up with a brush and toothpick. The gems are lose and can fall out. Looked closely for the other gems in the hole and dirt but nothing.

None magnetic, assuming silver. About 7 inches deep. Can depth be used to add context?

Cant see any stamp or ID now its cleaned up. When should or shouldn't i use water?

First hunt (again) - in the garden

Well I upgraded to a Nokta Legend. Found a pro brand new unused for a great price so what better than getting out in the garden with the new pinpointer and spade.

3mx4m garden and a quick going over found these below.

Away to chat to my local farmers where I had permissions before to ask if it’s still ok.

Happy hunting !

New to detecting with a mission and needing some advice

My Mission: To find my Dads wedding ring.

Some background: About 15-20 years ago (maybe more), my Dad lost his wedding ring in their garden. He passed 11 years ago and it has been something that has come up in conversion with my mum a few times a year since.

I picked up a second hand Bounty Hunter Lone Star Pro and a pinpointer a few years ago and have sporadically attempted to detect around areas of the garden, unfortunately the garden is big so I've tried to do it a bit at a time to logically break it up. I have found a number of metal bits (nails, bike mud guard, off cuts of fence mesh... etc) but this is slowing things down massively as I have to check each beep. I've tried to change the settings on the detector but from what I've read about my detector is that gold can show across 4 sectors (foil, 5c, Alu & Zinc) all of which I can turn on and off, but due to inexperience I haven't done so as I don't want to miss anything.

Do you have any advice? Am I going about it correctly or anything I can change to help my search?

Any help much appreciated.
