Tomorrow I am starting my long jurney through Malazan, anything I should know?

I know that this is supposed to be a hard read and I want to go in as prepared as possible without any spoilers. I already know about the presentation guide, anything else I should know?

Finally got some Caladan Brood merch. Atmospheric Black Metal isn't for everybody. But this album jives with me. It also makes me appreciate the source, Book of the Fallen, that much more.

Portrait of Fiddler by me (No AI)

This painting started as an exercise in painting a face from imagination. In the beginning I was not sure what I was going to do with it, but somewhere in the middle I decided to turn it into a baroque, chiaroscuro-style portrait.

Fiddler is hands down one of my favorite characters from Malazan Book of the Fallen. I have been meaning to do a piece like this for YEARS, and I'm glad that I finally got to do it. Keep in mind that all of the armor, clothing, facial features, etc. are a combination of my imagination and the flow of the painting. I decided to portray him holding a crossbow with a specialized explosive quarrel.

I hope you enjoy this piece. I'm not sure if Reddit will keep the quality of the original image or not, but please let me know if you want a higher-resolution version and I can upload it somewhere and share the link!

Cheers,

Mando.

Finished the Crippled God last week - question/discussion of the one scene that baffled/intrigued me the most (MAJOR SPOILERS, PLEASE DON'T READ UNLESS YOU'VE FINISHED MBOTF)

>!Quick Ben '# !<character reveal in the Crippled God at the very end of chapter two is dripping with mystery. From what I can tell, he is interacting with Mother Dark. And it would stand to reason it is regarding the deal he struck with Rake and Hood?

When I first read this scene, I predicted that Quick Ben had collected another soul: that being Rake's. I remember Rake pulling Ben aside all the way back in MOI and Ben being vague about he and Rake's private conversation. & Even seems, the way he is addressing who I assume is Mother Dark, that he's talking to her as would a character who has a full grasp on the relationship between Rake and MD. & The reason I made this mental prediction (truly the only prediction I made throughout the whole series besides Traveller being Dassem) is because it all seemed to somewhat line up. & Because this scene is so vague in general.

But if it were the case that Ben had taken on Rake's soul upon his death, I would imagine that at some point in this book, that revelation would be revealed in some dramatic fashion. & So it doesn't seem to be the case. & Would Fiddler have access to Rake's ghost in the epilogue if Rake is beyond "Whiskeyjack's gate"? Or maybe it's still a read and find out moment? I have only read the 10 book of the fallen books. I guess I'm wondering how other people interpret this scene in particular, and the whole 'deal' in general? I posted the scene in pictures here so y'all can easily re-read.

Help me understand

So I just started reading Malazan recently and am on chapter 18 of memories of ice (spoilers for that below)

Really loving it so far, but I am a cosmere fan and really like the hard magic system found there.

Some things have kind of bothered me so far into Malazan. I generally love the visceral realism, but sometimes the logic isn’t there and I am struggling to get past that.

For instance:
Just in the last few chapters during the siege of Capustan - how did gruntle and co survive on the roof for weeks at end before the bridgeburners got to them? I understand the physical space they took up and lived, but what about the need for food and water over 5 weeks (read in PowerPoint summaries it was 5 weeks)

And then the magic system, mages are very powerful and as are other key players but why isn’t that used more frequently? Why didn’t Anaster, who seemingly is a magic user by being able to survive the necromancers attack, just kill itkovian and co when they went to the palace?

I know it’s kind of small things, but I feel like it’s been frequent enough in the series so far to hinder my enjoyment. Just multiple points where logic goes out the window in favor of story/plot. Which is fair, it is a book, but again I’m just struggling to kind of enjoy things where it doesn’t feel like there are rules like there are in cosmere.

Forge of Darkness first read/listen through

I was having trouble with the content of this book. A lot of the content is dark, but I have been pushing through.

However, when I got to where they named the sword Grief... literal chills. There aren't many times when I am left speechless but this is one of them.

Chapters that you should read in one sitting

Hi all, a few months back I decided to read all of the last chapter of MoI at once, and it’s still probably already my favorite memory involving reading. (And I’m sure I’m not alone!) Since then, I’ve made it a point to read the final chapter of each book in one sitting.

Anyways, I’m on chapter 6 of The Bonehunters now and I know chapter 7 is highly touted so I wanna put aside some time for it. But it’s got me thinking, are there any more chapters like this that are in the middle of books coming up? This is my first readthrough so no specific spoilers please!

Up to this point my contributions would be:
DG 21+22
MoI 16
MoI 25
HoC 26
MT 9
MT 25

Christ

Chapter 12 was so good. This followed by “That's a succinct summary of humankind, I'd say. Who needs tomes and volumes of history? Children are dying. The injustices of the world hide in those three words. Quote me, Duiker, and your work's done." is insane. Such a great book so far

So did we ever find out the consequences of that one thing?

Building an Azath house inside the blood of a dragon. What ever happened with that? If nothing yet, then are there any leading theories as to what the implications will be?

So we begin again...

Finishing tCG left me with more questions than answers. I had to come here and ask, wonder, browse... did the author do a bad job? Am I more of a space cadet than I thought? Or does the simple fact that I, the reader, am not omniscient in this world, hold some measure of attraction?

I talked about it at length to people who never read the books. I proselytized to people who DNF the series, trying to convey the life-changing impact they were leaving on the table.

I moved onto Mark Lawrence, Barbara Kingsolver, and more.

At the airport, waiting for a flight, I flipped through Dungeon Crawler Carl, it piqued my interest. Didn't buy it yet.

Instead, I spent the next 3 days re-reading GotM with all the fervour of a kid. Flipping each page looking to catch references, looking to see connections. Is... is this addiction?

A quarter of the way through DG and I wonder why I didn't read the other books, Kharkanas etc. I should, shouldn't I? But I can't stop the re-read. I know what's coming and I cannot wait to get back to it.

What I've gleaned from this re-read thus far:

  • Largely, everyone sucks. Many folks redeem themselves but the amount of collateral damage for the purposes of amassing power or blocking it are wild. I wonder what peace would look like on Planet Malazan. Is "the law of convergence" just too powerful biologically for them to ever overcome?
  • I can't yet piece together when Tavore knew her endgame, or the supporting cast. If they're winding their way to the conclusion already, I'm not seeing the connections.
  • I understand Rake's eventual sacrifice for the most part, but maybe I've forgotten the significance of Mother Dark returning, if that impacted the climactic tCG plot or was unrelated. He was listless for song long, it makes sense that he wanted to give his people purpose and he knew he was a poor substitute for their Mother.
  • I wish Kallor had met a gruesome end, but alas, MBotF is not one for tidy happy endings.
  • I can't fully decide the perspective of Dancer and Kellanved. It seems mostly fuzzy. I almost want to like them, want to admire them, but then they go and do things that are horrific or seemingly self-serving. Their motivations sometimes seem contradictory, or perhaps its just that they see everyone as cannon fodder for achieving their goals, even as the goals shift and can sometimes be noble.

Complaints about Reapers Gale

I’m only 220 pages in but this book is already turning out to be a good one, I don’t understand the complaints from previous books.

Returning characters from midnight tides and toc the younger is back?
