Help me understand
So I just started reading Malazan recently and am on chapter 18 of memories of ice (spoilers for that below)
Really loving it so far, but I am a cosmere fan and really like the hard magic system found there.
Some things have kind of bothered me so far into Malazan. I generally love the visceral realism, but sometimes the logic isn’t there and I am struggling to get past that.
For instance:
Just in the last few chapters during the siege of Capustan - how did gruntle and co survive on the roof for weeks at end before the bridgeburners got to them? I understand the physical space they took up and lived, but what about the need for food and water over 5 weeks (read in PowerPoint summaries it was 5 weeks)
And then the magic system, mages are very powerful and as are other key players but why isn’t that used more frequently? Why didn’t Anaster, who seemingly is a magic user by being able to survive the necromancers attack, just kill itkovian and co when they went to the palace?
I know it’s kind of small things, but I feel like it’s been frequent enough in the series so far to hinder my enjoyment. Just multiple points where logic goes out the window in favor of story/plot. Which is fair, it is a book, but again I’m just struggling to kind of enjoy things where it doesn’t feel like there are rules like there are in cosmere.
