Planning a basic track on a grass field

We own a field next to the house which is flat and grassy. It previously had horses in so it is a bit too bumpy to easily ride bikes on (especially kids). I've been planning to build a very simple oval track around the fence line for running/easy riding. The plan is to use that track for a bit of running training and then to create off shoots for jumps as my kids get a bit bigger and better on their bikes (and for me).

I'm interested in ideas for making the base. I'd be happy with a dirt single track. My current plan is to hire a turf cutter, and then back fill the space with some sand/soil mix to then compact with a plate whacker. Anyone have experience with this?

I'm in the north east of England, the field is fairly dry as it has a slight gradient and is higher than the surroundings.

The jumps can come later as the eldest (5) is happy with a simple wooden ramp currently.

Any thoughts very much appreciated!

Haibike ALLTRAIL 10.5 ABS - 29‘‘ E-Mountainbike - 2026 - Glossy black / Gold / Grey

I bought a full-suspension e-mountain bike a week ago, and I honestly have to say I’m extremely happy with it. It’s been amazing for trails, touring, city rides, and even some freestyle riding. I’m really glad I went with this Haibike. I had been looking at the Cube Stereo Hybrid Blackline before and was actually very close to buying it, but in the end I’m glad I didn’t. This Haibike fully really convinced me, and I don’t regret the purchase at all.

I also added a few pictures as a little extra motivation, because, like I said, I’m more than excited about this bike. I’d like to know your community opinion on it — what do you think?

Trail building as a career

Hey everyone, I am new to the group. I recently completed a Masters in Planning. I was wondering if this could be useful for a career in trail building ? I have been mountain biking for years and have thought about joining my education with mountain biking in some way.

Located in Canada, I was wondering if this may be a viable path to explore.

I have a huge hill, four energetic kids and no idea where to start! Would you start at the top and work down or make some smaller trails down low and work up?

Hey everyone, I posted in the MTB sub and got some great tips but now I’m trying to make a plan. Post is here with photo of the area https://www.reddit.com/r/mountainbiking/s/UNtgUxdcPQ

It’s huge, steep in parts, 50 m elevation, and has heaps of features, its undulating and curves around, with deep valleys/drops in parts and flatter undulations in others. I’ll post a pic of the satellite view here. It’s about a hectare in size, so pretty massive.

Any tips to get started? Just get up there and start digging?

There is a wide old farm track that runs along the bottom, I was thinking king of starting there to get the feel for it then get a bit more ambitious later on. Soil is clay, rock hard in summer and sludge in winter (coming into winter now). Thinking of renting a bobcat before it gets too wet.

Any recommendations for the basics maybe on YouTube?

Thanks so much

Rock Moving tips.

A quick question to the community: I have found a big and perfect rock for a feature (squarish, flat, 1meter by 30cm). There was another one near it that was around half the size which i split in half to carry, i suspect each half was around 25-30kg. Therefore an estimate the big one is around 100-120kg.

How would you guys and gals move this is woodland, with no vehicle access. I need to move it around 50 meters.

Weeds problem

I’ve been working on connecting 2 of my local trails with a loamer trail recently and bench cut and drainage is all good the only problem is there has been some weeds popping up. If anybody has any suggestions on how to get rid of them I would be open to anything. Only thing I’ve found for most trails is riding dirtbikes on them a lot kicks up weeds and compacts things but I don’t wanna do that on this trail

My first jump line

I live 2 hours from some real jumps so I can’t get good at jumping. I asked for advice on here last year and a couple people gave me advice on what to do and some YouTube channels. This is the fruit of my labor. It’s fresh and powdery, because we haven’t gotten rain. I’m gonna make the berms bigger in the near future, but for now I’m going shred it.
