HP OMEN 16 WF1096TX | One Year Review (RTX 4060 | i7-14650HX)

HP OMEN 16 WF1096TX One Year Review

I've had this laptop for almost a year now, so I figured it's a good time to give an honest, detailed review, the good, the bad, and the frustrating.

My Specs

Component Details
CPU Intel i7-14650HX (16C / 24T)
RAM 16GB DDR5
Storage 1TB Samsung SSD (stock) + 1TB Crucial SSD (added later)
GPU NVIDIA RTX 4060 8GB Laptop GPU

Why I Bought This Laptop

Some of you might be wondering why I bought the laptop with back ports. I really didn't have other options I wanted an Intel CPU and a GPU that was good enough within my budget. The only other option I had was a Ryzen 7 with similar GPU and storage specs, or get an ASUS ROG which had lower specs despite being costlier. Other options like the LOQ or Acer were already discarded, so I went with this.

Initial Experience

Since April 2025, the first month went smoothly with no issues. NGL, I personally thought OMEN laptops weren't the best due to heating issues, as one of my friends had an older 2021 model. However, this laptop surprised me temps never went above 75–80°C while gaming on high/ultra settings.

That was until the third month hit.

Heating Issues (After 3 Months)

After 3 months of use, I noticed the laptop was getting hot and going above 60°C even on idle or normal usage, while the cooling fans were at max RPM (6000 RPM for my model).

I asked about this in the HP OMEN Discord, and they recommended a thermal paste replacement since the factory paste isn't great.

So I contacted HP support and showed proof that the CPU was randomly going above 101°C, causing thermal throttling. They initially insisted this was normal, but I pushed for a thermal paste change. Two days later, an HP support engineer visited my place and sat with me for 30–35 minutes, asking me to play a game in front of him to observe temps. After confirming the issue, he replaced the thermal paste and temps went back to normal.

Rusting Issue (Monsoon Season)

Everything was fine again until the monsoon season hit. I live near the ocean, so the environment is already humid, and the monsoon made it worse. One day I noticed rust forming on the bottom vents I was worried, it had only been 5 months and the body was already rusting.

I contacted support. WhatsApp support didn't help, so I had to switch to voice call support and show the issue live. They accepted my case and sent an engineer. He confirmed the damage but said replacement chances were low since it was considered "decorative damage" not covered under standard warranty.

I insisted and asked for escalation. After waiting about a month, they called back asking to take my laptop for research said it could take 1 week or up to 1 month, and the facility was around 2000 km away. I refused since I needed the laptop for work.

Three days later, I got another call they had approved a back panel replacement. Once the part arrived at the service center, an engineer came and replaced it.

Thermal Paste Again (December)

Everything was fine until December, when the thermal paste issue came back. This time, I applied PTM 7950 myself, and since then I've had no issues.

Fan Failure (January 2026)

On 25th January 2026, both cooling fans suddenly stopped working. I got system errors indicating cooling system failure. I contacted support and they asked me to run built-in diagnostics. The diagnostics confirmed both fans were not working. Luckily, these were replaced under standard warranty after I provided proof using the built-in diagnostics.

Gaming Performance

Config: Performance mode · Plugged in · Max fan RPM · CPU undervolted to -0.130V (stable for me.)

Games I played:

> Black Myth: Wukong · Elden Ring · Minecraft · GTA V · Stellar Blade · Wuthering Waves · Arknights: Endfield · Valorant · RV there yet! · MIMESIS · Dead Island 2 · Phasmophobia · Dead by Daylight · R.E.P.O · NieR: Automata · Where Winds Meet

Played mostly on High/Ultra at 1920x1080, laptop always plugged in.

Temps while gaming: CPU 80–85°C · GPU 70–80°C

Hall Sensor Issue Myth vs Reality

Ya'll must have see a lot of posts about the Hall sensor issue causing display failures. After a full year, I haven't experienced this, and I think it's worth putting in perspective

Honestly, its a Big No from my side. It's been a year, and apart from the issues mentioned above, I haven't faced anything else related to hallsensor issue.

The Hall sensor issue is blown way out of proportion. The HP OMEN Discord has around 12k members, and only 3–5 confirmed cases exist all from 2023 models. It's not widespread or inevitable.

The facts:

  1. Affected models were mainly manufactured in 2023 with RTX 4060 GPUs
  2. They had rear ports but again, only 2023 models
  3. Most confirmed cases were reported in India

Said and confirmed by u/ThinkinBig

This laptop was manufactured in 2024, and current models don't have this issue.

Build Quality & Design

As for build quality, I find it okay not the best, but decent and manageable. I do like the way the laptop looks overall. It doesn't give off a strong "gaming laptop" vibe, which is perfect if you want to take it to the office or university without flashy RGB. Clean and minimal design.

Keyboard & Trackpad

My keyboard experience isn't the best, mainly because I use an external keyboard about 90% of the time at home. However, when I use the laptop keyboard at university or the office, it feels decent.

That said, I do have a slight concern the keys feel a bit wobbly (minor left-right movement), which makes me worry about long-term durability. This model also doesn't have a numpad, and it only has white backlighting (no RGB), which I personally prefer.

The trackpad is good never faced any major issues. One thing though: after around 30 minutes of continuous use, it gets some static and becomes laggy. Easy fix just disable and re-enable the trackpad and it's back to normal. I mostly use an external mouse so I can't comment too much, but it's responsive and supports multi-touch gestures, which is nice for productivity.

Display

The laptop has an IPS panel with 1920x1080 resolution, but the color gamut isn't great around 64% sRGB. Despite that, I haven't faced any major issues with it for my usage (coding, gaming, streaming). Brightness is decent but could be slightly better at times. The anti-glare coating is average but works fine even in bright environments.

Speakers & Audio

I rarely use the built-in speakers since I mostly use IEMs with audio adjustments via Peace software. The speakers are decent overall, but let's be honest you don't really buy a gaming laptop for the speakers.

Battery Life

Battery life has been decent over the past year. I've done around 163/1000 battery cycles, with Adaptive Battery Optimizer enabled.

Stat Value
Design Capacity 83 WHr
Full Charge Capacity 67 WHr (81%)
Remaining Capacity 67 WHr

I get around 3 hours of usage on battery in ECO mode with Battery Saver on, along with CPU limiting using ThrottleStop.

Fan Noise

Fan noise is definitely noticeable it can get quite loud, almost like a machine blowing air in the room. I personally don't mind it, but if the room is quiet, you'll clearly notice the difference when the fans stop.

OMEN Gaming Hub (OGH)

OGH was good initially shows all the important stats and controls. However, I later encountered a bug where it was using around 4GB of RAM even when it wasn't actively running. That issue seemed to be on HP's side. Overall I'd rate it 7.5/10 I don't like the ads it shows nowadays, and it could be better if it didn't load unnecessary background stuff.

Upgradability

I've already upgraded my storage by adding another SSD. The laptop supports:

  • Up to 64GB RAM
  • Dual SSD slots (up to 2TB each)

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Good value for money (~$1075 / ₹1L)
  • Strong performance for multitasking and gaming
  • Good thermals (with proper paste/config)
  • Clean, non-gamer design
  • Upgrade options available

Cons

  • Display could be better (64% sRGB)
  • Keyboard keys feel slightly wobbly
  • Prone to smudges
  • Factory thermal paste is poor
  • Had multiple hardware issues in year one (though all resolved)

Final Verdict

It's a solid performance laptop in this price range and a good option overall. It handles both normal usage and gaming well without performance issues. Build quality is decent, design is clean and minimal, battery life is good for a gaming laptop, and the upgrade options are a nice bonus.

Overall, I'm really happy with this laptop and would recommend OMEN over options like ASUS TUF, Lenovo LOQ, or Acer laptops. Not hating on them, but from what I've seen, OMEN offers better value in this price range even if it's slightly more expensive.

It was a fun journey with its ups and downs, but I'm glad I went with this laptop. If you're looking for a budget gaming laptop with good performance and don't mind some minor issues, this is a solid choice.

Service Experience: 7/10

Overall My Experience: 8/10

Happy to answer any questions in the comments!

Special Thanks

Big thanks to u/ThinkinBig, u/Gullible_Decision_11 and other HP OMEN Discord members especially @Tembu for helping me out throughout this journey with this laptop helping me with all the issues and my dumb questions that I dropped in your DMs or in the HP Discord server. I really got to know a lot about this device and other information regarding laptops/PCs, software and components from your knowledge. I really appreciate all the help and support, and I hope you'll still be there to answer my dumb questions moving forward 🫡😅

TL;DR

HP OMEN 16 WF1096TX (i7-14650HX + RTX 4060) — bought April 2025, here's what happened in a year:

  • ✅ Month 1 — Smooth, great thermals
  • ⚠️ Month 3 — Factory thermal paste died, HP replaced it
  • ⚠️ Month 5 — Rust on vents (coastal humidity), pushed HP for a back panel replacement
  • ⚠️ Month 8 — Thermal paste died again, replaced it myself with PTM 7950
  • ❌ Month 9 — Both fans failed, replaced under warranty

Despite all that, performance is solid, handles High/Ultra on demanding games, and every issue was eventually resolved by HP support. Hall sensor issue is overblown — only affects 2023 models, not 2024+.

Replace the factory thermal paste. Don't wait for problems.

Service: 7/10 | Overall: 8/10 | Worth it at ₹1L? Yes.

I was just wondering if the fan is really weak, When I played it tended to heat up, but i already cleaned out the fans, and I also couldnt find the fan speed options in the omen gaming Hub, both fans are working but I am just thinking if it is really supposed to be that weak

Overclocking and Undervolting my 5060 HP Omen 16 Laptop?

I have an HP OMEN 16-AM0353TX with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Laptop GPU and Intel Core Ultra 7 255H I’m trying to understand how people are tuning these laptops.

Right now I keep it in Balanced mode in OMEN Gaming Hub because Performance mode pushes my CPU temps way up. In Balanced the CPU sits around ~82°C while gaming, but in Performance it jumps to 90–100°C, which I’m not a fan of. What confuses me is that I notice very little performance difference between the two modes, just higher temps.

A few things I’m also unsure about:

  • Should I keep OMEN Gaming Hub installed, will this mess up my power options if I remove it?
  • Should I be undervolting or overclocking, and would that actually help CPU temps?
  • If I undervolt, does that stay applied after restart, or do I have to set it every time?
  • If I use the laptop for other things like Photoshop or normal work, do I leave the undervolt on or turn it off?
  • Which apps do I get?
  • Is it always trial and error with these sorts of things or is there a guide for my setup that you know of or could assist with?

I mostly play Arena Breakout, Arma, BF6 and online sort of games! Getting around 60fps on low settings, sometimes pushing to 90 but it often dips and stutters.

The screen is 2560×1600, but I actually run Windows at 1080p because most games don’t run great at the full resolution. I’ve tried DLSS as well but it never seems to make a huge difference.

Ideally I’d just like lower CPU temps without losing performance, so I’m trying to understand whether undervolting or overclocking is the right direction here.

Any advice from people who’ve tuned OMEN laptops would be appreciated.

HP Omen MAX [ 32 GB DDR5-5600 MHz RAM, 2x16 GB, Processor and graphics AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 375 (up to 5.1 GHz, 24 MB L3 cache, 12 cores, 24 threads) + NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5080 Laptop GPU (16 GB)]

I recently purchased a high end gaming laptop from HP. I have been receiving low framerates ( IE 140FPS on League of Legends) I have contacted support numerous times and requested they resolve my issue or if they are unable to to please refund or exchange my laptop. They have been unable to resolve my issue and promised escalation and follow up, I have listed the time(s) I would be available and they would follow up either hours early or late to the call time. Then on a rare occassionally that they have called at the correct time I have been hung up on. I am currently debating whether I want to sue under warranty laws or through a class action lawsuit. If you are comfortable sharing similar stories of HP support teams obstruction of warranties I would appreciate hearing them and potentially referencing them if I move forward with a class action lawsuit.

I finally got the argb on my Coolermaster AIO to sync up with my Omen Desktop.

After hours of research and fiddling I figured out that it IS possible to run aftermarket argb fans and accesories on an HP Omen machine. That being said I fucking hate RGB and HP for putting so much proprietary bloatware on their machines. They did everything they could to stop the end user from this type of customization but I figured it out.

HP OMEN 17-cb0xxx

I have been using Fedora 43 COSMIC spin on my HP OMEN. Intel core i7-9750H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Mobile, 12GB ddr4 memory. I have to say it works, and runs smoothly after installing the NVIDIA drivers using the Comprehensive-Wall28 / Nvidia-Fedora-Guide that is posted. There are many steps but the installation worked perfectly. I have to say thank you to the person that created this guide. Definitely check it out! I also installed Easy Effects it makes the laptop speakers sound better. All the sound, and display brightness keys work on my keyboard after installing the driver. Fedora COSMIC makes the computer feel brand new again.

What upgrade options are there for my Omen laptop?

I need to replace my fan, so I figured I might as well get this thing back into shape.

I know I need to get another m.2, but what else can I upgrade here?

Do m.2's need to be the same kind? I'm a teensy bit out of my element here. 😅

Is there a place I can find compatible parts?

Thanks 🙏

HP Omen 16 (i7-12700H, RTX 3070) running slow and underutilizing GPU — need help optimizing

Hey everyone, looking for some help diagnosing poor performance on my HP Omen 16.

Specs:

CPU: Intel i7-12700H

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3070 (8GB)

RAM: 16GB DDR5 single channel (1 stick)

Storage: NVMe SSD

OS: Windows 11

The issue:

My system feels sluggish and the GPU is consistently underutilized during gaming. In Task Manager I'm seeing low GPU usage (15-20%) even in demanding games like Forza Horizon 5. CPU usage also seems inconsistent.

What I've already done:

Fresh Windows reinstall

Latest NVIDIA drivers installed

Hardware accelerated GPU scheduling enabled

High performance power plan set

RTX forced as primary GPU for all game executables

Disabled SysMain, GameDVR

Game Mode enabled

What I suspect:

I'm running single channel RAM (1x16GB DDR5) which I know creates a memory bandwidth bottleneck, especially starving the iGPU and potentially the dGPU too. But even accounting for that, the system feels slower than it should.

Questions:

How much real world FPS difference will going dual channel (2x16GB DDR5) make on this config?

Is there anything else I'm missing for Omen 16 optimization?

Anyone else had issues with Intel UHD eating GPU resources on this laptop?

Recently purchased second-hand Omen 17-an0xx - weird freezing issue

I recently purchased a second-hand Omen 17 - i7-7700HQ, GTX 1070, 16gb RAM, etc. as a replacement for a simiarly-specced Clevo that developed unfixable issues. While very satisfied with the PC specs-wise, it has an issue with freezing in some games, including Skyrim AE, Sims 4, Lord of the Rings Online. All games that have specs that should be no problem whatsoever for this laptop. Sometimes they may freeze almost immideately after loading, other times after a long session of gameplay. The PC does not seem to get hotter than normal. Other games seem to not have the issue. Nor does it happen in "normal" use (browsing the net, streaming). I'm quite at a loss here.... RAM issue? HDD issue?

Choices...[HP Omen 16]

Hello all,

So, I'm looking for a new computer. I found three of them and two of them are Omen 16 PCs. Here are the configurations for each of them:

FHD IPS 144Hz, AMD Ryzen AI 7 350, RAM 32 Go, SSD 1024 Go, Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 8Go, Windows 11 (The most expensive of the bunch)

FHD IPS 144hz, Intel Core Ultra 5 225H, RAM 16 Go, SSD 512 Go, Nvidia GeForce RTX 5050, Windows 11 (The affordable one, I heard bad stuff about the 5050 though more on that later)

And this one which is a Victius : FHD IPS 144 Hz, Intel Core i7-14650HX, RAM 16 Go, SSD 512 Go, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 8Go, Windows 11 the best bang for your buck of 'em all. It's a really good deal plus I have 25% off right now

Now that it's out of the way, I'm looking for a laptop that's running smoothly (which I guess all of them do lol), on where I can multitask easy, play some video games although not the first thing on my mind (I'm just getting into the PC gaming stuff and I'm not a huge gamer)

I heard that the Victius is good BUT the finish is kind of muh and plastic and heat can really get in the way? Also the SSD is tiny! What do you all think?

I think I'm going to have to choose between the three of them. Otherwise I keep adding one and another one in the thing and it's never ending lol

Oh and my current setup (which is OLD!) : Intel Core i5 9th generation, with a NVIDIA GeForce 1050 and 8go of ram. In anycase I think It's going to be a big gap. Note that I don't play on my current setup (or like very cool stuff like The Sims and stuff like that but I do would like to run bigger stuff like Red Dead Redemption II or the latest FIFA game...)

Thanks for your input, and everything in advance, really means a lot. If y'all need anything from me to help me decide, please ask away!

Missed sale one HP website

So I’m kicking myself because I missed the HP omen 45L with amd Ryzen 9950 64 gb of ram and 5090 for $4,675 with taxes. It was over $1,800 off. Any other places I could get good deals? I have an Omen so I would like my next PC to be an omen.
