So I was watching this video on YouTube about someone who was trying to improve their myopia using the controversial Jake Steiner End Myopia Reduced lens method (yes, I knooooooooow a lot of you on here don’t believe in it) ;)
And during the video, they showed a snellen chart at 20 feet away, which they had been using test and monitor their eyesight. I made sure video quality was at 1080p (the highest option), zoomed to full screen (I was watching on an iPad with 4:3 screen ratio) and took a screenshot. I noticed that the cameras vision was only good enough to make out the 20/40 P E C F D line but nothing below that, so the camera used to record the video had 20/40 vision. Of course, cameras are not as good as human eyes, especially when recording video, as the standard resolution is 1920x1080, whereas photo quality is usually much higher. But there might be some high res cameras out there that can see 20/20, I don’t know. I recently read that the resolution of the human eye is around 8K, so 1080p is quite a lot lower than that.
Nevertheless, I thought this was a good representation of what 20/40 vision looks like. Not blurry, but not the ultra sharp, ultra detailed, 20/20 vision I get when I put my glasses on. Good enough to drive and do most things, but not as good as normal human vision. More like camera vision. :p
I then went into the Picsart app on my iPad, and added a little blur to the image, until the 20/40 line was no longer legible, but the 20/50 line was still just about legible. Then I saved the image, then continued to add blur to simulate lower visual acuities.
Just thought this would be a fun and interesting project to do, to see what different visual acuities look like. It might also be interesting for others to see (especially those with good eyesight) what myopia (at the mild end) and low visual acuity looks like.
It would be good if the quality of YouTube videos would improve beyond 1080p so it would be the equivalent of 20/20 vision. I remember when HD video first came out on YouTube and thinking about how sharp and clear it was, now it just looks a bit “meh” to be honest.
Has long-term Meta Quest use affected your eyesight? Genuine question
Hey everyone, I recently got a Quest 3 and I’m loving it, but I’ve been wondering about the long-term effects on eye health.
For those of you who’ve been using it regularly for a year or more, have you noticed any changes in your vision? Things like:
- Needing glasses or a stronger prescription after regular use
- Eye strain or headaches becoming more frequent
- Blurry vision after taking the headset off
- Any other symptoms your eye doctor flagged
I know screens in general aren’t great for your eyes, but VR feels different since the lenses are so close to your face. Curious if anyone has actual long-term experience with this, or if it turned out to be a non-issue.
Thanks!
CURABLE?
Can I fully restore my eyesight and become free from glasses with this power?
I’ve had these for like 6-7 months and somehow the left lens got all scratched up like this. It started as a small scratch then all of a sudden got out of control. Only happened to the left side. I’ve been wearing glasses most of my life & have never seen anything like this. I obviously need new ones but now I’m cautious abt what to get…
I’ve been using transition lenses in grey for a few years now & love them, didn’t have any problems with my other 2 pair. This time I got Xtractive in brown & I’m wondering if Xractive/the color is more sensitive? I clean them the same way I’ve always cleaned my glasses: gently wash by hand with soap & water when they’re really grubby, and the lens solution spray + lens cloth for daily maintenance.
Wondering if this was just a fluke & I should try brown Xtractive again (I prefer tortoise brown frames & love how the brown on brown looks) or if I should just stick to what has worked for me with no problems (gray regular transitions)

Reading from phone or tablet causes blurriness that lasts hours.
About two years ago, I started having dry eye but I don't think that's the cause of this problem.
Problem: If I read from a book, paper or regular laptop screen, I'm okay. If I read from a phone or tablet for over 10 minutes, I'm done seeing well for the day. Only some sleep will reset my eyes back to good again.
I've seen a couple well-thought-of eye doctors that could not figure this out. Yes I have some dry eye and use drops but this came after the dry eye which was manageable.
It's bad enough that I can't drive safely after using the phone or tablet. To stay more or less safe, I don't drive once this starts up, but does anyone out here have anything similar? Could be a bad case of CES (Computer eye strain) or maybe dry eye?.
I've taken to doing the 20-20-20 thing where you shift your eyes to a focal point 20 feet away for twenty seconds to keep in focus but that's only an iffy solution.
According to doctors I don't have any huge apocalyptic eye problems, but they're sometimes wrong. I have no idea right now. I'm basically off phones and tables because this is the only solution I've found.
Hi, I just went to the ophthalmologist and feel a little worried about some of the things she said. Wondering if anyone could reassure me/help explain changes in my prescription.
I’m in my early 30s and have worn glasses for more than 20 years. I wear them all the time except when I run. I am an editor so I’m looking at a computer screen all day.
In October 2023, I went to an ophthalmologist I didn’t really like and got the attached prescription. I have a family history of thyroid disease, which affects the eyes, so I wanted to ensure I got a full baseline exam in case that hits me too. I’ve been seeing pretty well with the glasses I got after this visit.
Recently, a loved one pointed out to me that my eyes looked like they’d been crossing and my right eye pointed inward. I didn’t see this myself but was worried enough to schedule an appt with another doc since I figured I was due for one anyway. I think I was kind of hoping to prove her wrong.
When I raised the strabismus issue with the dr, she tested me and said she didn’t see any horizontal issues but actually saw some vertical heterophobia. She did a lot of tests where she simulated double vision and said my eyes were “very fragile” because I had trouble with these tests. She was also concerned about my asymmetric optic nerve and number of floaters. We talked about putting a prism into the next pair I get, and she also suggested getting some sort of booster that would help me with reading up close. I didn’t like any of the frames at her office, so I didn’t make any moves.
I guess I’m just overwhelmed at how I went from “you’re fine!” to “you’re fragile” in such a short time period. Wondering if I should seek a second opinion and just how worried I should be. I’ve attached the prescriptions and can send a pic of eyes if needed lol. Thank you!
I first got my glasses at 11 with a power of maybe -0.75 or -1 im not sure. I was careless during covid, and didnt wear my glasses for like 2 years and then at 14 my eyes were at -5. Since then, my eye power keeps worsening by -0.5 or -0.25 every year, but my friends who have double the screentime as me either dont have glasses or their powers don't increase as much as mine do.
Is it just a genetics thing or should i be concerned?
I wanted to ask my optometrist about it today, but I forgot:(
p.s im at -7 now
