is this out of line??

is this out of line??

ive never posted on reddit before but i need a second opinion here. tomorrow is my last day working at my DG (thank the Lord), but a while ago, our store manager made this announcement and its been my roman empire since.

i get the message 100%. though it wasnt a common occurrence for cashiers to eat/drink at the checkout from what i could see, i understand that maybe it needed to be talked about anyways.

but... come on, the wording!!! "cramming food in their face"??? "slurping"?? "THIS IS A BASIC ADULT FUNCTION"???

i cant be alone in thinking that this is absolutely nuts

Why do people not carry IDs???

So I'm an employee and ofc we LEGALLY have to ID everyone when the computer asks for it, especially for alcohol and cigarettes. So why the actual hell does no one carry an ID or get pissy about being asked. Like no one's job is less important than your beer or cigs, just show your ID. Listen, I personally don't care if it's expired as long as it's your face and birthday. I'll enter it manually if I have to. But why are so many people driving around without IDs??? So many people will look at me and go,"I don't bring my ID with me when I leave home" what happens when you get pulled over or something? Like?

And don't get me started on the people that are mad we now ID for like pop-its and sparklers and lighters.

EDIT: Yesterday a Hispanic customer basically called me racist for asking for his ID for pop-its and Sparklers. He said,"No one else ID me. You have a personal thing." I tried to show him that my computer was asking me for ID but he just stormed out grumbling about making a complaint. Mind you he said he had it in the car.

The store that I worked at had a remodel, and they let me have the old register keyboard when I left. I wanted to use a keyboard and mouse while playing call of duty on Xbox, but I’m in the process of moving so my actual keyboard isn’t here yet. Had to improvise. Surprised it worked😂

All these outs and they choose to send us overstock.

I do my counts every single week. I scan overstock and outs and the departments I'm supposed to. Every. Week. And what do I get on my truck the next week? More overstock. None of the stuff I actually need. My DM goes "aRe yOu sCanNinG yoUR oUtS?!" YES. I'm scanning everything for months now!!

I have inventory next Tuesday and I just got 26 RTs yesterday.

8 of those RTs are the daisy and denim that I can't set yet because there's still so much lawn and garden.

And I get no help from my DM for inventory, yet she always tries to take me and my people to help at other stores.

I'm so frustrated with this company.

End rant.

Watching The DG Dumpster Fire Is A Lot Less Stressful When You’re A Spectator Rather Than A Participant

I finally quit last week and honestly the whole thing feels less like a resignation and more like the final sene of a very low budget workplace documentary.

This was always my secondary job. My actual career is stable, professional and staffed by adults who communicate directly instead of trying weird intimidation tactics that immediately fall apart when the person you’re attempting to intimidate actually understands company policy better than you do.

And I mean that literally. At one point I realized I knew the company SOPs better than the actual store manager, who I’m still not convinced knows what “SOP” even stands for.

But I genuinely liked this job once. I liked most of the customers, liked the work itself and for a long time I genuinely wanted the store manager to succeed. A lot of us did. Which is unfortunate because apparently the reward for being competent is eventually becoming a threat and then slowly getting fucked with until moving on becomes the better option.

Over the last year I watched multiple smart, capable employees slowly get run off while the people who stayed were the ones who never questioned anything, never made decisions independently and required constant direction. One employee has been there since September and still refuses to do freight because he “doesn’t know where anything goes.” Which is honestly impressive at this point.

Then I committed the unforgivable sin of asking for Saturdays off while still being fully available for my full-time hours the other six days of the week.

There was a whole back and forth with the DM before he finally said to just give me Saturdays since two other employees had “completely open availability” anyway.

This apparently launched us directly into the Fall of Rome portion of the storyline.

Suddenly my hours were gutted, I’m repeatedly hearing how I could be “written up,” blank write up forms are mysteriously being left out in the office like I’m supposed to tremble before the mighty Lexmark printer and I’m repeatedly being told about other employees’ disciplinary issues like management somehow confused me with the HR department.

Meanwhile communication became a bizarre game of “the DM said this but the SM said the opposite” and I got scheduled for Fresh on Thursday with the aforementioned freight-refusing employee.

Meaning I was once again expected to unload and put away an entire Fresh truck basically alone while management bragged about getting an extra 20 labor hours for the week.

That was the moment I finally realized I was no longer witnessing dysfunction. I was actively participating in it.

So Thursday, right before my Fresh shift, I texted the DM explaining that I would not be coming in and exactly why. Then I walked in, dropped off my key and left. Effective immediately.

And…this is where everything caught fire.

The Fresh truck sat sealed until nearly noon Friday because apparently neither the SM nor her fully available FT employee were available to unload it either.

Then despite having Friday and Saturday to find coverage for my now-open Sunday shift, the employees with “completely open availability” suddenly became unavailable. Even the freight-refusing part timer who supposedly wanted all the hours didn’t show up for his already scheduled Saturday shift.

I stopped in Saturday for a couple things and got treated to the SM loudly repeating “EVERYONE IS JUST OUT HAVING A FUN TIME” over and over while the store itself appeared to be running entirely on panic, unresolved freight and the consequences of repeatedly keeping the wrong people.

You know. The kind of vibes where burger buns are living their best life in the chemical aisle, Legos have fully settled into the laundry soap section, random carts of merchandise assigned to the same person have been sitting untouched for a week or two and unopened boxes are considered “put away” because they were placed in roughly the correct aisle by the SM and her trusty, open-availability FT employee without ever actually being opened.

Which, to be fair, became a lot more visible after I stopped quietly cleaning up everyone else’s abandoned projects and random messes a few months ago after repeatedly hearing that I “never did anything” while spending most of my shifts fixing things other people left unfinished.

Honestly my only regret in all of this is not looking directly at the Fresh driver while dropping off my key and yelling:

“BREAK THE SEAL!”

And the funniest part? At this point the only employees left there who consistently function at full capacity are high school kids who legally can’t even sell cigarettes or beer yet.

Do you see it? Guess we gotta start singing the “Stare Spangled Banner”

We got this shipment in and I didn’t think anything of it when I put it on the shelf. Later that night I started to recover the store and I thought I was going crazy and even had to look it up to make sure I knew how to spell star lmao. Thought yall would get a kick outa this💀🤣

Legitimately wondering if the change is fixing to go bankrupt..?

So, I've noticed that my nearest store has been stocking quite minimally for several months now... Especially the frozen and cooler stuff. When I look it up on Google, it seems like this is an issue across the US. It's as if they're not able to afford to keep up with demand. Are they getting ready to close stores?

Help finding product

I’m trying to find a Dollar General discontinued item. It is the pineapple kicker (brand name Forever Pals). I find them sometimes in clearance sections, but it’s slim pickings. The kicker is my old lady cat’s favorite toy. She won’t play with anything else. I’d like to buy more. If you know a store that has one, please let me know!! She turns 10 in June and I wanted to get her some new ones.

Am sorry in advance, mods, if this kind of post isn’t allowed. Just giving it a shot.

Cat tax attached (with kicker in photo), if I did things correctly.

Overheard this convo today at DG

So there was a line of customers and the backup cashier opened up a register and said “I can get SOMEONE right here”. The third person is line was the one that stepped up, not the second person. The second person in line got mad at the cashier because they didn’t automatically call the second person up in line specifically. Now I’ve worked customer service before too, so I get it. While it’s typically the next person in line to go, there was two people on register and the cashier on register one was almost done. If the second person really wanted to go next, they should’ve stepped up when the cashier said they were open. I don’t think the cashier was in the wrong if the third person in line was the one that stepped up. Because I feel like it would’ve been more rude to tell the third person no if they already stepped up. The second customer in line demanded the corporate number from the cashier over this. The cashier got kind of flustered because they felt they were put in the wrong and the customer goes “are you okay? Chill”. Turns out they had already had a rough day with customers before that because of something that wasn’t their fault (system issues). While that’s not an excuse to act “hostile” as the customer put it, I’d be flustered too if someone put me in the wrong when I didn’t feel like I was in the wrong. But, with the way the customer was acting towards the cashier because of not being called on, it felt like the customer was getting hostile first, hence why the cashier got a little frustrated back. I know this cashier from coming in their store and they have never gotten complaints on themself before and they are always very nice. But, everyone has bad days and I feel like more people need to realize that and be more compassionate. When I have a rough interaction with a cashier, I usually assume that maybe they’re just having an off day unless they are always like that to customers (This specific cashier is not one of those people who is always negative). I mean, it would’ve looked way worse had the cashier not opened the register at all. At least they did their job of helping customers.

GM is disregarding my children

So, i’ve been working at this store for about a month, and everything is fucked to say the least. we have 7 total employees, all shifts, because our GM in a narcissist to a fault. when i did my interview, i explained that my children had court ordered appointments. ones that i will face fines or worse if i don’t take them to. my eldest son has mental development delays. so he has 6 hours of therapy on mondays. i told her all of this. and yet im being purposefully scheduled on days i told her id be busy. when it comes to scheduling, im a shift lead, who cant close or open the store. doesn’t have a key, and cant log in to legion. these issues were brought to the GM’s attention, before totally ignored. i worked in the store completely alone from 8am to 10:30pm. close to open. ALONE. upon calling the GM 5 times with NO RESPONSE at close time. i manually counted the drawer, closed to the best of my ability, and left a note. i left to go to my sons therapy appointments today, as i do EVERY MONDAY FOR THE PAST YEAR. there was a 6 car pileup that im honestly, still waiting to be cleared. I once again explained to the GM that i want in town and would probably be late, more so because of the accident. and she sent me a message saying if i can’t make it in im fired. she’s demanding that i come in because i’ve been late multiple times, after she’s changed my schedule with ZERO notice, i’ve ran the store and closed it wrong, after never being shown or taught how. i’m debating between silent compliance and telling her off, followed by quitting. it’s been like this since day one, she’s uses the employees, gets pissy when they don’t know what to do when she hasn’t taught them, and takes it out on the same employees.

Missing pay

I was rehired a few weeks ago and began work on a Friday, the last day of the pay period. I was not able to clock in or out because the assistant manager had not received my eid yet. The store recently had the SM, ASM, LSA, and SA quit the same day few days later another LSA and SA also left leaving two employees. So she was new to the ASM role and having to do the SM job as well, knowing she had a lot on her plate already I didn't want to add to it by hounding her over my EID. I continued to work and get retrained on closing the store while writing down my clock in and out times the DM was putting it in for me manually. So time came for me to get paid for my first day (5hours or so) and I didn't get anything so I emailed her asking about my EID so I could log in and check my paystub. That's when I learned my i9 had not been sent through correctly and needed to be resent. The DM was confused but found it and sent it in after she did that she went to put my hours in for the second pay period I had just completed, that's when we noticed my last name was not right, they had me in the system as another girl that never showed up to work at different store nearby. I am assuming she got my first paycheck? Now the ASM is brushing it off when I ask about the pay for that day, should I call ERC or try asking the DM? I don't want to piss either off or get them in trouble and then get treated differently because of that.

Friend needs help to transfer stores

My friend is trying to follow the policy of transferring stores. She's been at her DG for about 6 months and needs to transfer to be closer to her family. When she asked her SM for help transferring stores, the SM changed her upcoming schedule from 36 hours to just 16. The SM is also refusing to give her the DM's contact info. Does anyone have any suggestions that I can give my friend?

Edit: There’s details that I had to leave out for the safety of my friend. Let’s just say that her safety has been compromised because of things at this store including the SM.

Cashier handed us a blank gift card instead of the one we loaded, not necessarily his fault

So my 43M husband and I 41F were each purchasing a dollar general gift card (they can be used like cash to load the gaming wallet app Skrill, and are an easy, fee free way to move cash or money from a debit card to Skrill as late as 10 pm for online shopping or whatever purposes. Not all our debit cards will link in the app to transfer in). Husband grabs 2 new gift cards on his way to the register, hands a blank gift card to the cashier, he rings it up. Husband pays. Gets receipt and presumably the card. Husband had grabbed 2 blank cards off the shelf one for himself one for me, so he had mine ready and hands it to the cashier (here is where we suspect failure). The cashier has trouble scanning the card, it beeps but isn't bringing up the correct screen on the computer. I ask if maybe we should try a different card, Husband goes and grabs one from the shelf. It scans, I pay, take my card, we go. When Husband checks on his card, its as if it was never activated or purchased. No balance or transactions. Checking the receipt, the last 4 digits of the card we loaded do not match the last 4 of the card we left with.

So, either my husband accidentally handed the cashier the just loaded card instead of the new blank one, it wouldnt scan because it was already activated, and the loaded card either went in the trash, cashier reshelved it, pocketed it??? Or, something similar. We have all relevant receipts, transaction history for the cards we used to purchase, luckily it was 20ish min before close when we made the purchase. We are going back to the store first thing when they open tomorrow to see if we can figure it out by rolling back cameras possibly. We hope that the originally purchased card is still unused and we can have that value transferred to a different card. Husband is currently in the rain dumpster diving in their parking lot hoping it got tossed in the trash on the top layers and he can find it. (We are two very different people lol. Im gathering receipts, digital trails, looking up corporate contact info, and he's putting on a slicker suit and rain boots to try and find it)

My question is have any of you had issues with dollar general gift cards not being loaded correctly? Or lost/stolen cards? We're you able to recover the vvalue? This was $200 we would like to not lose! 😳😅😵‍💫

so I quit DG not because I didnt enjoy the work or the customers - it was easy, I could do it with my eyes closed, but my manager was more unethical than anyone ive ever met, including past bosses and here's why -

right off rip, when i walked into the store before she knew me from adam, from down the street (im saving for a car, so this location being a few houses down was highly convenient) she followed me out as I was leaving and said a guy was asking about me ? creepy much... they thought I was homeless because I walked LOL right away red flags... so I explained my situation. she said to fill out an application and she'd push it thru - "oh really, because I talked to the guy at the register and he said it could take a couple weeks"

second red flag - "dont listen to anything he says, he doesnt know what hes talking about."

fast forward a couple weeks - I get hired under the promise that id never have to walk home in the dark alone LOL that didnt last at all...

she doesnt like the guy at the register and lets it be known (she didnt hire him and he actually knew how to run the store better than her, she had no management experience, idk how she landed the position other than its in the middle of nowhere you need to be and they were probably desperate seeing as how she herself drives a half hour to work)

I was her favorite person ever for about a week until her attitude about me completely changed because I wouldnt put up with her bull 💩...

my god we had a group work chat and God forbid she asked us to respond to let her know we had seen her messages that didnt need to be a text but could have been said to the person it pertained to in passing but noooo the first time I went to put "okay" it changed to the 👍🏽 emoji and she sent me a message personally saying that she finds the thumbs up disrespectful and to not do it again. didnt know we were robots and had to speak like her for her approval - especially coming from the lady who says "otay" like in the little rascals... every time she needs to use the word okay in real life.

God forbid you left the group chat... "who leaves the group chat. why are you leaving it. you're not allowed to leave." ... again, nowhere in the DG hiring process was having a phone so she could text us photos of how the store wasnt recovered to her standards a requirement for getting the job. every morning, at 7 am sharp, even though you had just worked a night shift. that was her prerogative to completely and rudely start our days with how pissed she was at register guy for failing to close properly when surprise - id come to find out, its impossible to make this lady happy especially when youre working by yourself until 6 pm when the 2nd person came in.

nevermind that she swindled me into becoming a keyholder so I could take register guys place, her way of pitting us against each other which failed btw, but at one point she even asked - "you're not actually friends with him, are you?" lady, we all work together. I dont try and catch flies with vinegar... she was toxic asf in that regard. keep your opinions on your employees to yourself.

the asm was the teachers pet, following her around the store every morning shift and getting gifts from the store from her as tokens of her appreciation.

made me sick the favoritism.

she brought her twin sister in on truck days every Wednesday and saturday... not an employee, just her sister. i almost subconsciously decked my boss at the register one day and her twin picked up on my vibes better than she did cuz she said, "you better be careful; shes gonna get so mad at you if you dont move."

fast forward to the deposits and drawers at the end of the night and I kid u not, the wifi sucked in the back room - half the time the computer wouldn't work - 15 minutes to do all that... haha yea, right.

id get out around 10:45 on a good night. she changed my clock out times TWICE to 10:30 and when I found out by checking the legion app, I called HR who said they'd investigate. idk if they ever did or if the DM is in her back pocket cuz she said she did it so we both wouldn't get in trouble... trouble? for being in the store too long actually working?! I just watched that cbl that states dont do anything off the clock or you could get in trouble. sketchy asf.

the real kicker was when she put me on a half hour break i never took as if that was ok - I only worked 5 hrs and was under the impression a break was optional for that long of a shift.

the last straw was when the computer wouldnt go past the popshelf login screen so I couldn't do the end of day stuff - i called my boss who said I couldn't leave registers or deposits incomplete so I would have to stay until i could get into the system. so wait, staying til 11 then was fine but on my own accord when making sure I did everything correctly wasnt? the computer didnt work the next night either so then she changed my schedule and had the asm work my 1-10 and i was the 2nd person coming in at 6... so I came in around 4... after she had already messaged the group and said the schedule would be changing (her favorite thing to do) but was it changed in the backroom? of course not!! cuz why would we have lives outside of work to plan for?! I dropped my keys, nametag, and a post it on her desk with the words

"its been fun.

be a unicorn in a field of horses.

- jennifer"

and as I checked out the asm said, ill see you in a couple hours... to which I said... umm.. well.. actually... I just quit. and walked out and never looked back.

was what this lady did at all legal or ethical and where do i go from here in making sure justice prevails? shes gonna take advantage of the kids she has there, thats her m.o.

I guess i was just too old for her bull crap to believe and put up with any of her lies.

DG Delivery

I have been working for the same store for 2 years and yesterday was the first time I have had a DG Delivery order. The ones that are prepaid and you scan a barcode before scanning the product.

Of course it did not go smoothly at all.

There were two substitutions that needed to be made. On my computer I could not figure out how to substitute the product.

Specifically:

6pk Baja blast needed to be replaced with regular Mt dew.

12 can fanta orange replaced with strawberry

I called my SM and ASM who both told me there's nothing we can do and the customer needed to cancel that order and start over with the substitutions.

On one hand it makes sense because they already paid for baja blast technically, but it doesn't seem right that we can't substitute on the register? I understand why doordash can't make the exchange, but I don't understand why I couldn't.

I tried to talk to the customer through dashers. I gave them the store number and asked them to call me so I could explain from my end what was going on but they refused. 7 dashers came in trying to pick up that order and there was nothing I could do but turn them away.

Later in the day I saw my DM who came through shopping and I casually asked her about it and of course she has no clue. She told me to ask someone who uses it.

TLDR:

First time checking out a DG Delivery order but could not figure out how to make substitutions. Managers advised me to have the customer make a new order and cancel the old order.

Is anyone more knowledgeable on this topic? How do I handle this in the future, because this didn't seem right at all.

So I quit

with no other job in hand, I called my manager and quit. Lots of reasons why behind that, and she knows them. I was emailed a separation notice to sign two days later. I’ve never had to do this at any other job. what exactly does this mean? I went ahead and signed it, but does this mean I could apply for unemploymen? I definitely don’t qualify, as I was not let go, I literally called and said I’m not coming back, because I’m physically not able.

Gotta love the company, title says it all. This was about a month ago and I’m all sorted now, so figured I’d spill the beans a bit. I live in New York where sick time is protected, I was pretty sick the one day where I couldn’t stop shitting, messaged my manager and has explained the situation asking to use some of my sick time for the day. He said no problem and put it into atlas. I take the day and recover a bit. Go in the next day and the moment I walk through the door (6am shift) and my SM looks at me and tells me that due to being on an attendance final my call off yesterday means I’m terminated and to hand my keys over. I did so and just walked away saying alright. Shortly later I had messaged the SM confirming that my sick time was used and he confirmed it was. I swear this company is run by idiots. The District manager knows he is on his way out and is slowly dismantling his stores along the way it’s sad seeing this when I actually enjoyed my clientele and store. Oh well. Easy unemployment while I look into options legally.

Hey everyone — I’m currently in final interviews for a Store Manager position with Dollar General and wanted some honest feedback from people actually in the role.

I was quoted around a 48-hour work week and ~$55k salary with bonus potential.

I’m coming from a retail leadership background and feel confident in my ability to do the job, but I also have a family and want to make sure I’m walking into something sustainable.

A few things I’m hoping to get real-world insight on:

• How accurate is the “48 hours/week” expectation? What do you actually work most weeks?

• How often are you working 6 days a week?

• What situations typically push you over your scheduled hours?

• How much does store staffing impact your quality of life?

• Are there “good stores” vs “bad stores,” or does it all tend to feel the same?

• Is the bonus realistic, or hard to actually achieve?

I’m not afraid of hard work — just trying to understand what’s normal vs worst-case.

Appreciate any honest insight.

my store manager-is this normal?

I started as a key holder in late December, moved up to assistant manager a couple months ago.
Our store manager has himself on the schedule from 7:15 to 5:15 just about every day of the week except sundays. A couple weekends ago, he stated he wanted to take the weekend off and scheduled me to open on Saturday and another associate keyholder to open on Sunday. Then, two weekends later, he’s scheduled himself off another weekend. Meaning I have to work six days in a row, Friday being 11-close (9:30ish) and then Saturday coming to open around 7:30 to 515.
He NEVER works past about 230. any days that are not dry truck stocking days, he’s there by himself til 1ish and so I realize as the only person in the store to run a register (even though we are not particularly busy on weekday mornings), there isn’t a lot he can realistically get done.
But there are 1 million planograms, end caps, and tier tables that he has neglected to reset. He doesn’t do his damn job worth a crap. He tries to put his responsibilities on his other employees and then berate and even insult us when we are not working as efficiently as he would prefer.
I have a suspicion that he thinks he’s going to be able to take every weekend off. If he continues to work the hours he’s been working, less Saturdays, that will put him at less than 40 hours a week as a SALARIED store manager, less than what I often work, and definitely less than one of my coworkers does. Am I wrong in thinking those are some cush hours for a manager of a store like this? I’m sick of this bullshit. He doesn’t do his job properly, doesn’t use his time properly, and it affects all of the rest of us being able to train ppl and do our job properly. I was hired at part time, I should’ve never taken the assistant manager position but I wanted the pay bump (which is still pitiful), but I spoke with him a month ago informing him that I needed to go back to part time even if it meant letting go of assistant manager position and he agreed for to letting me do that once the school year ended, which is happening next week and does not reflect on my schedule next week. I just reminded him of that today as he has a habit of conveniently forgetting things. I have two kids that will be out of school for the summer and I split time 50/50 with their dad. any advice? I’m lucky in my situation as I receive a small amount of child support and I don’t have to pay rent and in all honesty, my sanity, work – life balance, and time with my kids is more important than working that many hours a week for the moment, especially w the ridiculous stress of this job. ps i’m looking for a better job, but I’m also struggling to find a moment to breathe in between all my responsibilities and this godforsaken place
