Hi! My gutters are in shambles and it’s time to replace them, and I’ve been thinking about making a rain gutter garden (Pinterest pics below). Has anyone ever made one? It seems pretty straight forward, but wondering if anyone has any major pros/cons/difficulties they’ve experienced through time or from building, or in ground vs raised bed. I don’t want to use plastic! Thank you!

EDIT: I live in an arid climate, so it does not rain much but when it does it currently goes directly onto my foundation. I bought this house recently and am trying to improve things. I just learned about this when researching how the heck to replace gutters. It’s my first home. Please be nice!!

Tomatoes - What's everyone growing this year?

I'm looking to fill the 6 slots of got in this year's garden. As of now, I've got Sun Gold (always a strong performer), and looking at Isis Candy and Indigo Cherry Drops. I did Berkley Tie Dye last year, but it was a low yielder so I'm not growing it again. New Girl performed well, and had a late but steady delivery, so I'll add it back.

Any recommendations for proven non-cherry varieties? I'm in Longmont, 6-7 hours of direct sun with afternoon shade. Raised irrigated beds.

FREE MULCH, leftover from chip drop!

Hi all!
Please message me if you’re interested or know anyone who could take this mulch mound away. We loved the chipdrop service, however it was way more than we needed, and would love to share with others…FAST!
We live in the Virginia village/glendale area.

Did I know the advice of waiting until after Mother’s Day? Yes. Did I ignore the advice? Sure did. Do I regret everything? Oh, yes.

Things I planted - two types of tomatoes (almost certainly dead), bell peppers (lol), eggplant (dead), zucchini (mega dead), parsley (probably dead but who knows), sage (my only hope at this point).

Resource Central Garden in a Box

I have no doubt everyone on this sub has heard of the water wise gardens available through Resource Central. I've had such good luck with their plants and cannot recommend their gardens enough. Over the last 2 years I've been tearing up dead sod, converting the sprinkler system to a drip system, and I think 90% of the plants have come from Resource Central's Garden in a Box packages. I haven't even turned on my drip system this year and have only watered the trees and any new plants I've added. Everything is still thriving and the honey bees are loving all the new blooms!

My honeysuckle

I covered all of my honeysuckle vines for the last 2 snow storms. Not sure if it actually helped or not but I am successfully blooming and it's stunning!

I can't remember which variety these are - either coral star or goldflame

What is this (flower?)

I was curious about it last year, I can’t find the picture of it fully boomed but it turns into a floral ball, they’re long and stemmy and this year the amount has doubled, theyre in a few places around my yard. I’m wondering what it is??

Planting tomatoes?

Hey all. I’ve been growing tomatoes from seed since February and I want to plant them in ground SO BAD (and get the out of my house haha). I was going to plant them this week but now there’s going to be a cold front over the weekend?!

When is everyone planting tomatoes and should I wait until this cold front passes? I thought about planting a couple as an experiment and seeing what happens but I could also just wait!

Looking forward to everyone’s garden advice 🫶

Tricky plant suggestions

I need some suggestions on what type of plant I should grow. The spot that I want to put this plant gets absolutely no sun until about 4-7pm of that hot western sun and then nothing again. I have tried a maidenhair fern and an ostrich fern, the latter did much better, but both struggled immensely and eventually died. I would love some flowers but am open to any type of plant. What kind of plant would you try in that spot?

Satsuki Azalea Nikkō

I've had this tree since 2016. Every year its show has gotten better. This year the red branch (lower right) is less red but I have backups in case a graft is needed. I think it's less red due to things being unseasonably warm. I know most people think it's silly to name a tree but this one's name is Zadok.

New Garden, Too Much Sun?

Hi other Denver Gardeners!!

We finally are combatting the terrible xeriscaping at our house and adding a vegetable garden 🙏 I’m excited to have some green around here.

We planted these trough beds and some pots on Friday and I have visions of peppers and tomatoes and cucumbers dancing in my head.

However, it’s Monday and the plants in the troughs are already looking a bit crispy. We are watering by hose and I’m likely going to add some straw, but anything on the right side does get FULL Sun. I’m wondering if I need to add a shade cloth, particularly while things are at this baby stage?

Not sure if I’m being a helicopter parent 🤨

My yard does not care that it snowed.

I love the resilience of these plants (and all the others) to handle both the summer heat and the late spring snow!

Stripped all my grass. Replacing it with rock. Some little grass sprouts let. What do I do about these?

Is there a sod specific herbicide or something I could spray these with, or a non-herbicide alternative?

Tree Request for Narrow Yard

Hi all! Looking for help picking some trees that would work well for my yard.

I have a long narrow strip along a busy road with no shade at all. Right now the strip is half grass and half dirt. It’s about 40 feet long and 5 feet wide (fence to pavers) at its narrowest.

I’m hoping to get something that can extend past the height of the fence to give a little more privacy. And I’m also hoping to get some more shade.

The little bit of shade I do get is from a massive tree of heaven. I would love to tear it down, but I’d really like to get something else started before doing that. I don’t mind spending a bit more money to get something a little more mature.
