r/ChiefsOffseason

My take:

I'm not a professional and nobody cares what I think but I'll say it anyways. Strap in for a long read. Or don't. Doesn't really bother me either way lmao.

The draft might not (read: definitely did not) go the way that most of us wanted. Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one😂

That said, most of us are fans who have real lives and jobs. We watch a few highlight tapes, look over some mock drafts, and read a few write-ups about players we like. We make our own mock drafts, we debate with each other about merits of CB vs Edge or offense vs defense. We slander the front office for their picks not being the same as ours.

Those guys don't have a job to worry about other than watching these players. They know every time Delane has been to the restroom since October of last year. They are putting in 60+ hour weeks studying the pros and cons of every single player in the draft. While we were all busy assuming McCoy would be a first round pick, these guys knew that his knee cartilage was made from egg shells and that his ACL is just a piece of scotch tape apparently.

Yall gotta remember that these guys have built a dynasty and trust their process. Sure we had a bad year but (almost) every loss was a one score game. In most games we were just a few bad plays from winning. Flip a few of those one score games and we would have made the playoffs again. It's not like we were Raiders or Cardinals bad. We didn't need to rebuild the whole roster, we needed to improve slightly in a few areas and I feel like we did it 100%

Qb: Mahomes might not be ready for day one, so drafting Nussmeir isn't such a bad choice to me. He's got potential to challenge fields for the QB2 role I think and even if he doesn't, it's not far fetched to think they'll want 3 QBs on the roster as insurance after the injury. A-

RB: this one is pretty obvious, nobody has really complained about the transformation there. They spent a draft pick on what is probably RB3/4 if he makes the roster at all but those late round picks are always a crap shoot. A+

Edited to add ^- there are some who doubt rather K9 can stay healthy if he takes on too much workload so the extra couple of running backs here could just insurance on him to make sure he remains rested and healthy.

WR: we act like our receiver room is the worst in the league but I'm not that down on them myself. As long as Rice stays out of prison and on the field, he's consistent and he's good at what he does. Worthy is lightning in a bottle and with him back healthy this season, with the backfield actually keeping defenses honest I think he'll have a breakout year as a deep threat. I'm hopeful that Caldwell continues to improve and becomes the guy we've been missing for a few years now. B+

TE: my first real negative here. We have the best in the business, but he's not getting any younger. This is likely his last year and each year that goes by he has been less able to carry the offense solely on his back. Hopefully he'll do fine this year since we have some other guys to help carry the load, but we don't have great depth here. I was hoping to pickup someone he could mold into a worthy successor. Maybe Gyllenborg is that guy but hard to get my hopes up for a UDFA. C+

OL: I hear alot of hate about the line here but their front 5 is as good as anyone can hope for. Maybe if we didn't have so many other needs we could have jumped on a RT to compete for the starting spot, but what we have is by no means bad. I give this one a B-

DL: I know we all wanted to go edge rusher instead of CB with that first pick, but Spags was D-riding Delane hard and CB was definitely our biggest hole this year after the whole room moved to LA. We managed to get an aging Chris Jones some help inside in free agency, then drafted a guy who is possibly better than his 2025 tape would have you believe. My point earlier about the scouts knowing more than we do... They wouldn't have picked him at 29 if they weren't confident about him. He'll be able to rotate with Tonga day 1 and could potentially challenge for the starting spot. We still have Karlaftis on one end and presumably Gillote/Thomas will rotate on the other. With any luck Thomas will beef up a bit and become a 4 down player. B+

LB: Bolton and Tranquil are still here and still pretty solid. The improved line should take some stress off of them and make the whole defense look better. I would have liked to see them pick up a new body to replace Chenal but you can't always get what you want. Maybe Bassa steps up here. C+

DB: Free agency absolutely wrecked our secondary but they took some big steps to fix the problem. With their ability to polish turds into diamonds at CB, Delane should be a top tier defensive talent for the next 4 years until we trade him and start this whole process over. On the opposite side we have Williams, Canady, and Vedder to compete for CB2 or rotate out. I'm not super sure about that group. For safeties we lost cook but have Gilman and Connor. I was hoping to pick up a safety on day 3 for depth but it's passable I think. For now this one gets a B+

Overall: There were some glaring roster needs that were all addressed well between FA and the draft. Our 2025 season was a disappointment but not meltdown level. Prior to the Mahomes injury and the team falling completely apart, we were probably the best 6-11 team you'll ever see. Look at 2024 vs 2025. In 2024 we were 11-0 in one score games and made a superbowl appearance. In 2025 we were 1-5 and missed the playoffs completely. Flip that script and win those 5 one score games, and we finish 11-6 and make the playoffs again. All this to say that while we lacked in some areas and couldn't finish at times, we were not a horrible team.

If (if your aunt had balls, she would be your uncle) we had just one of the extra pieces that they picked up this off-season, we'd have been contenders. K9 obviously is a major improvement in the run game which opens up the passing game and you have to figure they get that extra score they needed more often than not. Or if the offense remains shit- if we had a single quality pass rusher opposite Karlaftis so we could actually get the opposing offense off the field when it was 3rd and forever, the other teams probably wouldn't have scored the TD that cost us the one possession game. Lucky for us we addressed both needs in the off season. Not to mention the coaching changes we had.

As a whole I rank the team as a solid B and look for them to be a contender again this season. Looking forward to a 13-4 regular season on our way to another Lombardi Trophy.

TLDR: no need to panic. Trust the staff. We had needs and they filled those needs. The dynasty continues. Remember that we won a superbowl with Pacheco in the backfield and our receiving corps that dropped more balls than Diddy. We don't have to have elite talent at every position to win.

How do you grade the whole draft?

Now that we see the full haul, what grade do you give the Chiefs draft?

I think I’d say B+.

Delaine and Woods will be day 1 contributors with massive upside. Thomas and Canady could be an interesting pieces of the rotation.

I wanted a bit more offensive firepower and I wish they’d been more aggressive at edge, but I like the vision overall.

If we’re counting UDFAs, it’s an A for me. Gyllenborg and Caldwell are great pick ups. Adding them makes me feel better about not drafting offense until the 5th.

Post-Draft: How would you rank each position group on the team?

Thought this would be an interesting through exercise.

Obviously the QB room is #1, I think RB and DB would be behind that, although putting DB that high is somewhat of a bet on the Chiefs track record with that position group

Next three for me would be TE, OL and DL. With TE and OL I think you feel really good about the starters but the team is lacking depth, and I think a blocking tight end would’ve gone a long way for this team. With DL, I think Woods and Thomas will need some seasoning but it’s undoubtable that the DL got deeper this weekend.

My last two position groups on the team would be LB and WR. I’m probably lower on the Chiefs starters at both of those groups than a lot of other people though and I think WR is extremely important, so that’s part of the calculation here too

2027 draft targets: OT, WR, TE, LB, EDGE

[Highlight] NFL Reporter Charles Robinson Explains Jermod McCoy's Draft Slip: "It's not the ACL tear...There are some teams that are taking the position that if this next surgery, which would likely knock him out for the entirety of the year, is not successful, it will effectively end his career"

Geez our signings have been insanely good.

IF Caldwell and Borg come back from 2024 seasons they are literal masterclass signings.

Chiefs 2026 Draft Class

CB Mansoor Delane

DT Peter Woods

EDGE R Mason Thomas

DB Jadon Canady

RB Emmett Johnson

WR Cyrus Allen

QB Garrett Nussmeier

How y’all feeling? Wish we could’ve grabbed a TE personally, but feel like that run in the middle rounds hurt us. Overall very happy, got far more athletic on defense as well.

Veach Is Loading Up On Freak Athletes in UDFA

Jeff Caldwell, Xavier Nwankpa, and John Michael Gyllenborg are all freak athletes with sky high potential. All 3 were draftable and among my favorite late sleepers.

Veach did this last year two. Draft picks go to guys with elite tape (and often average measureables) but in UDFA he goes for freak athletes.

CB Board on Day 3 is Shockingly Stacked

I know we got Delane and we need a receiver, but I wouldn't be mad if we took Keionte Scott or Keith Abney at 109 to fill the Slot. Devin Moore and Chandler Rivers could be there in the 5th. Meanwhile McCoy's STILL available and his knee must be truly fucked for that to be the case.

All defense through 4 rounds, what offensive weapons should we target late?

At TE maybe Trigg, or Cincy’s TE might have a Kelce connection

At RB I like Kaytron and McGowen out of the remaining guys

WR, as of writing this Lance and Coleman are still on the board.. Tyren Montgomery is a fun stash and develop guy too

Already have one backup QB who can’t throw, why not 2

Imagine this: the chiefs are down by 6 to Buffalo in January. We’re on the goal line. Snow falling at arrowhead.

Chiefs line up with Mahomes under center, Justin Fields and Taylen Green split back, Tonga and Peter Woods are in, ready to motion to who knows where. Joe Brady is wetting himself.

13 seconds later and confetti is falling alongside the snow. Chiefs are the AFC Champions yet again.

Only CB worth taking in the first round

Is this actually a Veach masterclass? No other CBs worth taking in the first round so knew he had to be aggressive. Read the board perfectly
