Ones who've been to Spain did you wish you spoke any Spanish? Should I learn Spanish?"

Going to Spain this summer and wondering if it's worth trying to learn some Spanish beforehand.
For those who've been did you manage fine with just English, or were there moments where you really wished you could speak Spanish? Any embarrassing stories?

What do you reply when someone says ‘you look tired’?

Frankly, it’s because I am but I’m getting quite fed up of colleagues telling me so. What do you reply when someone tells you that you look tired?

How do I get rid of rats once and for all?

This is the third summer in this house and the rats are back in the loft for the third time.
We’ve tried all bits of advice we’ve received so far.
We’ve had two lots of pest control out - one from the council and one private company. The council just put poison trays down and advised me to remove my bird feeders. He also told me that mint was a useless deterrent. The private company also tried poison, told me it would take a couple of weeks to work. They also said they’d come back and put cameras in the loft to see where they are getting in then ghosted us!
I’ve got poison boxes right round the perimeter of the house. We ripped out and reinstalled all the loft insulation last November and couldn’t find where they are getting in. The poison trays up there were all full!
Has anybody had a similar issue and found something that actually worked? Their creepy little tip tapping above my head when I’m in bed is driving me mad!! Thanks

If you were made redundant today, what would be your next move, and how would the next few months look for you?

Was thinking about this last night.

I am kindve at the "last bastion" in places to work in my career.

If I was to be paid off, I'd either have to move very far away to continue doing what I do while earning enough to maintain my current lifestyle.

Anywhere else that's close, is still far from where I live and would still be a major upheaval of my life to do it.

I have no idea what job I would go to if I lost this.

I am somewhat trapped, it seems.

Capitalism has got me.

Would you leave a role on your cv/linkedin if you didn’t pass probation?

I’m unsure what to do and me and my friend have opposing views.

I didn’t pass my probation period recently (it was 3 months) and I’m not sure if I should leave the experience on my cv and LinkedIn or remove it entirely. I was made redundant in 2024 so the gap between then and this role was filled by saying I worked at my dad’s company.

My friend says I should remove it entirely because it looks bad to recruiters and companies having a 3 month role that you left abruptly on your cv so best to avoid it entirely and say that I was working for my dad the whole time. Whereas I feel like having the short role would look better than having no recent corporate experience in the last 2 years whatsoever.

I left €400 on the table from a flight delay because nobody told me I had compensation rights, can you guys guide me more about EU261?

Hey Everyone,

So about three months ago I had been to Barcelona. Standard European nightmare, delayed flight out of London n tight connection. As I landed I got very busy with and totally forgot about it. but yesterday my mate casually mentions EU261 compensation over drinks and I thought he was kidding. I thought if your flight is delayed by more than three hours you could be eligible for 250 to 650 euros depending on distance, mine was delayed about six hours at arrival. I could've been near the top end. I spent five minutes frantically digging through old emails trying to find the booking reference then I checked whether there was any time limit and it turns out to be not as simple as you miss it and it's gone instantly. Claims are generally governed by national limitation rules that run from the date of the flight, and they vary by country.

Anyways, can anyone guide more about eu261 after the fact?

What happens if I bet large amounts as an 18 year old but with legitimate money?

Lets say I'm in the UK and just got trust fund money from the government and injury court payout money. I'm going to use some of this to bet

Let's say I turned 18 got my trust fund and court injury payout of 5,000. And I use a lot of that money to gamble, like 900 each bet, will the bookmaker ask for bank statements and after I show them will it be hassle free since there's nothing illegal I'm doing and my money came from a legit source

Will my account also be limited?

Ladies: do you wear make up to work?

I always wear make up to my 9-5 job. I can’t imagine going in with a bare face. But lately as I get older (I’m 36) I’m starting to feel I care less and I feel it could be quite freeing to go in with no make up. Looking around my office, I actually realised that many women don’t wear make up in.

At the same time, I don’t want to “let myself go.” I feel good when I wear make up, but I’m starting to feel drawn to going without.

Curious to hear about other women’s choices regarding make up in the work place. Do you wear it? Or do you not?

What "All in one" alternatives to Butlins are out there?

As much as it hurts, serious replies please...

What "all-in-one" alternatives to Butlins are there, with things like the fairground and swimming pools?

Due to work ect I've not been able to get time off for a proper holiday for years now, but with redundancy looming and a month's paid holiday and bonus before hand, we'd like to treat the kids to a decent holiday if possible.

None of us have passports so international is out the question, it would be 2 adults, 2 teens and an 8 year old - they don't mind Butlins but if an alternative is out there, I'm more than happy to try that!

Thanks in advance.

Do people lie about their weekend plans just to keep small talk going?

Usually when people ask me about my weekend plans or what I did over the weekend, it takes me a while to remember, and sometimes I don’t really have any plans. But most people seem to have an answer ready right away. Is everyone really that busy, or are people exaggerating or lying about their weekends?

What should I do to improve the quality of my life?

I (26F) live in the outskirts of London. To give a picture of my life, I work from home on the computer, but I walk my dog twice a day and I go to the gym so I’m not inside all day. I have friends, and I meet with them a couple of times a month to hang out or go out to eat. I don’t have a boyfriend because it’s so hard to meet people. I have hobbies, like pilates, reading and writing. I go on holiday a few times a year.

I enjoy my job, and I’m not depressed. I have friends, so I’m not lonely. But, I feel like my life is being wasted. Every day feels the same and I feel like there must be more to life but I don’t know what it is.  I just feel a massive sense of lack, and boredom. I feel limited, in terms of what I’m experiencing and the world around me. London is expensive so I can’t afford to be constantly going out and doing things, but there surely must be things I am missing which would improve the quality of my life?

So my question is: What can I do while living in London to improve my routine so I feel less bored and more like I am making the most of my life?

(I’m new to Reddit so I apologise if this is in the wrong thread. Also thanks in advance for any answers)

What’s the deal with UK air conditioning? Why do we suffer?

With the looming May heatwave, I’ve decided to splurge on quite an extravagant air conditioning solution.

After doing my research, and owning one of my own, I’ve realised the standard portable air conditioners we have access to here in the UK are essentially a scam. Technology connections on YouTube explains why better than I ever could here: https://youtu.be/\_-mBeYC2KGc?si=lXXexM635yQXGb-B

Essentially when the condenser is inside the room as with most portable ACs, it generates heat, is very noisy, and creates negative pressure in your room which sucks the warm air from outside back inside through the shoddy window seal you’ve DIY’d together.

The one I’ve bought, called the Midea Portasplit, gets around this by having the compressor hung on a bracket outside your window, still temporary with no screws required. It connects via a hose to an indoor unit more similar to a proper split system, but without the ugly permanent box on your wall. The US for example have loads of options like this that sit in your window, and Germany have caught on the last few years with products like the Midea Portasplit and more. I haven’t been able to find anything online about it being used in the UK, or anything similar. Just brits suffering with their shitty portable units they bought for a few quid at Argos.

My question is: Why is nobody talking about this in the UK? Online or otherwise? Why do we suffer? Why are these products that actually work around the world so rare in the UK? Why do we in the UK have a strange stoic suffering culture with a sort of social currency applied to it? Complaining about the heat during a heatwave in the UK is basically a national sport, but actually spending money to fix it feels somehow indulgent, even embarrassing. Visible domestic comfort infrastructure has a sort of strange cultural coding in the UK, the rest of the world just installs AC and gets on with it. What’s our deal?

Why has going to university become such a cultural norm?

Hi,

I have wondered this and wondered it for quite some time.

Why has going to University become such a cultural norm?

I'm all for it when its a genuine right choice, but to me it seems loads of people do it, and it is not the right choice, something thats done on a whim or doesn't actually get them the benefits in the world of work.

Also theres the side discussion about student debt.

Ok, I've never been myself and it doesn't appeal to me because I woudn't call myself an academic (just for disclosure).

I do think a cultural norm has developed over the years when it comes to university attendance.

Many people do things that are not the right fit for them personally, just to fit in with a prevailing cultural/societal norm of the time they live in.

If this is true, where has it come from, why has it come about and is it beneficial to the country as a whole?

What was the moment you realised your local high street had died?

For me it came this week in fact. Went to buy some batteries and donate old clothes at same time and realised even the poundland and barnados had shut. We literally have vape shops and barbers left

Based on the UK artist I've enjoyed and mentioned below, what other artist would you recommend?

I'm Mexican-American, and I've been trying to find what kind of music I like outside of banda, rap, and corridos and I've recently come across a bunch of artist that are from the UK. I'm into basically any genre and willing to try out anything. I've come to realize how much I love these artists and how much the UK has influenced the US music industry, especially during the British invasion from the 60s and onward. So far, I've enjoyed the entire catalog from:

The Smiths.

Suede

St. Christopher

Duran Duran

Sex pistols (a few of them lol)

Cocteau Twins
