Gameboy Appreciation Post

Just wanted to talk how much I loved going back to the Gameboy, it started modding my childhood GBA SP 101 with a new shell and batter and some fixes and getting an EZ Flash Omega DE. Then I just couldn't not want a regular GBA which then I imoorted from japan and heavily moded it with a shell, V5 LCD, Type-c battery, and an implifier. I then also had to get a GBC that I got in pieces, I bought an original board from AliExpress and got an OLED mod kit with an amplifier.

So far I've beaten many games like:

- Mole mania.

- Link's Awakening.

- Kirby's Dreamland 1 & 2.

- Konami's TMNT 1 & 2.

- both kuru kuru kururin games.

- Rhythm Heaven (Silver).

- Mega Man Zero games.

- Super Mario World.

- Kim possible Trilogy.

It's the most fun when playing old games but in an improved state with modding and romhacking, it's so much better than playing them on a new remaster on a new device. For example, the Mega Man Z games I already got them on switch but the it's hard to play GBA and GB games on a large screen even in the switch's portable state screen. And the improvements they did on the remastered collection didn't do enough to me especially for the first game.

Is there a way to launch game discs region free using PSBBN?

Hey all, so I am planning on getting a fat Japanese PS2 soon and I would like to install PSBBN and maybe mainly use HDD OSD but I do have official Japanese and US discs that I want to play from the disc drive as well. Is there a way to do it without a mod chip? And if so what PS2 revision should I go for? I can't find a US PS2 where I live currently.

I got into the rabbit hole of this Panasonic Quintrix-F TX-33P100

Hey all, this is a follow-up to this post. So I got really interested in CRTs lately, and I’ve read so much about them to the point where I now have a list of CRTs that I dream of owning. Unfortunately, they’re not easy to find where I live.

I was going through the biggest thrift store in my country for hours and couldn’t find anything good. Then, right before I left, I saw someone loading a huge silver CRT into a truck, so I went over to check it out. In my mind, I was looking for any CRT that had component input, since that was the common pseudo-RGB input back then. When I saw this set had it, I was surprised, but then I noticed it also had a VGA input, and that’s when I thought I had to get it!

I checked to see if it was an EDTV set that upscales and adds latency. I looked through the manual and couldn’t find anything, so I bought it for the equivalent of $160. I know that’s expensive, but I hadn’t found anything decent for a long time, and this one was large and even came with its own branded stand on wheels.

Thanks to u/AmazingmaxAM, I learned what a 100Hz set actually means and that it’s awful for gaming unless I plug in through VGA, which bypasses the signal conversion. It took me a while to get everything set up too, it was a hassle getting my laptop to output a 480p image through an HDMI adapter.

I tested things out and played some games through emulators. I beat Kirby’s Adventure on NES, and it was a fantastic game. I enabled scanlines, and it looked beautiful though the gaps where a bit too large I think due to the dim brightness, plus the image persistence was great! The biggest issue is that when using the VGA RGB input on this set, the brightness becomes dim. Even after getting a remote and increasing the contrast, it’s still too dim for my liking.

The best experience I’ve had with this set so far has been Dreamcast anf gamecube emulated games and 480p 4:3 videos, which is such a rare thing to see, the way that 480p looked sharp was actually really nice and weird at the same time. the colors looked so punchy and the text looks so sharp and readable. The speakers are also incredibly good and extremely powerful! I also tried playing Wii games from my Wii U, which supports 480p correctly, but some games are annoying because they only support 16:9, and many Wii games only run at 30 FPS and has weird filtering with a very smooth and ugly image maybe I should get usb loader gx on.

However, my main goal is to properly set up 6th-generation consoles, especially the PS2, but that’s going to require a bunch of adapters to get working correctly and maybe get some modes like the hdmi mode to enable some filtering. I’ll probably get a SuperStation One eventually so I won’t have to fiddle around with all the pre 6th-gen consoles one by one.

Before this I was prepared to get into the rabbit hole of componenet adapter and have already made lists of what stuff I should get but now I am in this VGA adapters and cables and converters rabbit hole haha.

I am still not quite sure that games will look as beautifully sharp as when I got emulators on.

My main issue remains the brightness of this set, which is such a letdown, and I don’t know if it can be fixed as I may get to replace it if I get the chance for this reason. I guess the geometry is pretty good, though.
