Posting a cool CRT instead of complaining about CRT prices, Day 37 of 100: Fisher PC-380W

Imagine if this amount of effort was put into most CRTs. The wood, the control panel across the top, and the speakers on the side all give this set a very premium look. I grabbed this set on my journey to find my childhood CRT, a Fisher PC-340. If you ever see an 80s Fisher show up, grab it. They all look really nice. Unfortunately they don't show up often. In the past year I've only seen six within 1k miles of me.

This model is a 27 inch, which is larger than most other Fisher sets at the time which were 25 inches instead. This one has some issues. The speakers have some distortion to them and sometimes one of the two will stop working. The geometry is a bit wild as well. The scanlines are very thick towards the top of the tube and very narrow towards the bottom. This set has two composite inputs as well as composite out and speaker inputs.

These units were often sold as part of a home audio setup. Its really close to being a perfect CRT in my eyes. Previous models had a channel indicator as well as the glass pane in front of the tube. If this model had those features, this would be my favorite SD CRT.

I think that's everything. Wasn't this fun? I shared a set and didn't mention that CRTs are sometimes expensive. If you want to do the same, please make a post and share your sets. I would love to see them.

37 down, 63 to go. See you tomorrow.

What adapters do I need to get a ruko to work with this?

I have tried messing around to get it working with a ruko but I am at a standstill.

Any Recommendations for Geometry Adjustments?

Model: 20F424T

Sadly, there is no pincushion setting within the service menu. Is this considered very bad geometry or would you recommend just leaving it? Do I expand the horizontal lines to improve geometry or increase vertical lines? Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks y’all!

Geometry

The horizontal geometry on my CRT is a bit screwed up. Any suggestions for fixing it?

How to make custom resolutions on Bazzite Linux

After spending to much time and following guides that where outdated or overly complicated, I wanted to make a simple to follow tutorial on how to make custom resolutions via EDID overrides.

To make this work you will use Custom resolution helper (built into Bazzite) to dump the EDID file and use Custom Resolution Utility to edit it via steam using the proton compatibility layer to run it.

Custom Resolution Utility download link. Download

Step 1: Open terminal and run Custom resolution helper by typing crh

https://preview.redd.it/supx92aro72h1.png?width=909&format=png&auto=webp&s=e00e623b50b30db3974a57c037e833ed79098329

Step 2: Select Dump-EDID

https://preview.redd.it/mrsaiqy1p72h1.png?width=1039&format=png&auto=webp&s=78d0765b638183548744d8b249fcbaebaf6d7c64

Step 3: Choose the correct display "If you do not know what input to select you can run kscreen-doctor --outputs to find out"

https://preview.redd.it/fjakfx6kp72h1.png?width=1039&format=png&auto=webp&s=b1fd9cca6767831d41f8122f1207408967854275

Step 4: Press enter to continue, the EDID file will be located at /tmp/crh/edid.bin

https://preview.redd.it/3p8lnymwp72h1.png?width=1039&format=png&auto=webp&s=ccca403394b1c3bac06679a0f847bd0009ca99c3

Step 5: Add CRU to steam as a non steam game and enable proton under compatibility

https://preview.redd.it/apldetzlq72h1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d6543b24bceb014eae943c767806f47d3c3032b

https://preview.redd.it/xuqrvm1nq72h1.png?width=842&format=png&auto=webp&s=c392a82d40c614917c4409dc798d2224e97a2b64

Step 6: Run CRU and import the EDID file, after that add your new resolution under detailed resolutions tab. Once done choose export to save the new EDID. The one in the example picture is for my Toshiba HD CRT so I can run it at 480P 16:9

https://preview.redd.it/mpmr4jx5r72h1.png?width=890&format=png&auto=webp&s=cda5d2a61b4b22a902736ad20b0ab56849249e3b

Step 7: Open terminal and run Custom resolution helper by typing crh. This time we will be selecting Add-EDID

https://preview.redd.it/v2qdmhyur72h1.png?width=1039&format=png&auto=webp&s=79d5cde7e1478e24c924941b0daf8a0477f0e949

Step 8: Put the new EDID file into the directory that CRH has created at /tmp/crh/edited/

https://preview.redd.it/jmzz59ags72h1.png?width=1039&format=png&auto=webp&s=9052ea48eb9bf2d33ea3f18a5f190800dfd63f0e

Step 9" Confirm the correct monitor

https://preview.redd.it/26odn69ls72h1.png?width=1039&format=png&auto=webp&s=b1982960258b07d6765134e2b7b9785f3209b21a

Step 10" Let it run then reboot to test the new custom resolution

An Philips Computer CRT a just found in an attic.

It had been stored in a very dusty attic for nearly 30 years. What should I do before plugging it in and testing it?

Could this be worth saving?

I see this CRT in a local Pub in my City. That's the best picture I could take (ik it's horrible) But just by the looks of it, could it be Worth it to ask? (To me, looks like a monitor)

Saved this great Panasonic Panasonic S70 from ewaste

The university chemistry department in my city was apparently dumping a bunch of them. A guy working there managed to give out a few by advertising on fb marketplace and I was lucky enough to get one!

It’s almost the monitor (though not as high end as P70) from the famous ‘Wake up Neo…’ scene in the Matrix which makes it even more appealing to me.

Great pickup day! :)

Hospital PVM update: I got one!

So yeah I did it! I got this bad boy for free. It turns on fine but… we have issues. The front panel appears unresponsive, except for the buttons on the left (input change, under scan ecc…) but the ones on the right show no sign of doing anything. Also, the video indicator LEDs never turn on. The picture is way too bright and it’s ever so slightly shaking left to right, but the contrast and brightness buttons don’t do anything. Is it a problem with my inputs? I tried both SVIDEO and composite from my vga adapter… same thing. Any tips would be appreciated!

Sony KV-27S42 Zig-Zaggy Blue Screen of Death

I've been working through modifying this set to accept a component and RGB signal. I had the component working fine but while troubleshooting the RGB input I must have done something inappropriate because now all I see is this.

Thus far I've removed all my modifications and have taken it back to stock as much as I can except for some of the resistors and capacitors that I've moved/removed. None of those moved/removed components had any impact on the picture prior to this. I had tested both composite and component prior to my little mistake and both still worked well.

I was using the instructions from the sunthar site: https://sector.sunthar.com/guides/crt-rgb-mod/sony-kv-27s42-rgb.html#step-5-connect-sync-and-s-video-detect

Problem is I'm not entirely sure what I did. I could've bridged two points with my soldering iron. I honestly can't say. I checked for solder bridges, loose connections, cold solder joints, everything. Normally I'd be seeing "input 1" right here. But now, nothing. just the blue zig-zags and a flashing status light.

Any advice where to start investigating?

Thanks!

How do I fix these corners?

I got this crt and when I turned it on the image was almost entirely green (see second image) so I used an Amazon degaussing wand (third image) to try to fix it, it got better but the corners are still green (1st image) and should be blue, i tried rotating it but that did nothing but make the screen look weird (not colors weird just scan lines weird) how do I fix this?
