folks, i come to you asking for skillets. whats your favorite, and why?

more selfishly and specifically, im craving skillets with _cubed_ potatoes. if youve ever been to Egg Harbor Cafe in the western suburbs, their skillet is my platonic ideal. the taters taste fried but not quite crispy, maybe par boiled but not quite mushy. i cannot figure it out to save my life.

Rogers Park chicago. landlord swears its an "Oriental Waterbug" but im terrified its a roach. he had the pest guy out and sprayed anyhow. ive found 3 of them the last few weeks. yall got thoughts?

also addendum: i hate these shitty glue traps, they are awful and inhumane to mice, but my landlord has me use them. i split 50/50 with them and my snap own traps in my apartment, at least those are a little less bad. i check them diligently and, the one time i found a mouse in it, i put it out of its misery myself so it wouldnt suffer anymore.

hey gang

i just wanted to take a beat and say thanks to this sub for being really welcoming of discussion. any time i ask a dumbass question about why cant Amtrak simply do x i get like a 2 paragraph answer explaining nuances of transit i didnt even know existed. i already loved the trips ive taken, but it makes me care even more about this stuff. so thanks!

folks, i want your favorite cup of coffee from a place you wouldnt expect it. im not talking trendy cafés. i love those, but im talking an unassuming diner with coffee that makes you go "woah, not bad at all." maybe a student center thats actually good. a corner store. even a dunkin that is surprisingly well run.

for me, its the Cozy Corner on Devon and Sheridan in Rogers Park. it looks like a normal diner. the outside is clean, but has an old school look like it hasnt been touched in decades. the inside is similarly well cared for, but its a very standard breakfast place. booths and tables and a counter. menu has a little bit of everything and is maybe too big.

and their breakfast fair is great, but ill be damned if the coffee didnt make me go, "woah, not bad at all."

oh and as a counter balance: also seeking worst cup of coffee at the best spot. Harner's in Aurora is legendary. their baked goods are sublime. Biscuits and gravy? unmatched in my mind. living in Chicago i rarely get out there. i dream about it. but their coffee is simply the worst dogshit i have ever drank. its coffee themed dish water. and i wouldnt change it for the world.

you got any spots like these?

im up in Rogers Park, and only just noticed that joint Variety Foods on Sheridan and Lunt. its nothing special, just what the title implies. corner store with essentials - snacks, milk, bread, eggs, drinks, cigarettes if youre into that. and some sandwiches that are only just _okay_. theyve got a little counter with a neon sign for ice cream and coffee, maybe they have that in nicer months?

BUT. its well lit and clean and the guys nice enough. its nice to have a convenience store thats not 7/11 or CVS or Walgreens within walking distance. its also east of sheridan, so living on that side, i dont need to cross the street.

so i ask the chat, tell me about your corner stores.

Hey gang,

long story short, changed my name last year. i put in a new online application to vote, got a message that my information was successfully matched to the secretary of state database, and now my local election authority would be processing.

however its been a month and i havent heard anything. when i look up on the state application status search, the status field is entirely blank. when search the chicago board of elections lookup, i dont show up.

any of yall deal with this before? how much of a pain will fixing this be?

hey gang.

i was doing so good. last year, was losing my hair for months. it was a really hard year. i started Rogaine in November. started multivitamins for some very mild deficiencies (d and b). it started paying off around February. i think part of it was that for a while, having the stuff on my head made me not want to fidget with it. but the whole time, couldn't figure out if it was deficiencies or stress or behavior. nevertheless, a few months later, well, i have my answer!

the last month, my life has been a mess. burnout setting in at work, precious little time for hobbies, too far from friends and family. i'm treading water. too much other shit to talk about in therapy to even get close to talking about my hair. and slowly, i've started fidgeting with my hair again. i get stressed before meetings and pull and push it, then my scalp gets irritated, then i scratch even more. now its falling out just like it was before.

i guess, at least i caught myself? but fuck, i'm so annoyed with myself. my hairline is a frickin MESS.

so i ask the chat: please send me your energy to reel it back in? anything that helped you stop?
