My LDR boyfriend (29M) of two years cheated on me after he moved to Australia with his best friend (29F).

Context: they’ve been best friends for several years, and at the beginning of the year they moved to AUS around the same time to work. We met while he was backpacking through Asia a couple of years ago, and committed to a LDR — at least that’s what I thought.

Over the last two years, he visited me twice in my native country. It’s hard for me to get a travel visa to the west, so he’d always meet me here. During that time, he and his best friend, also from a different country, met up four or five times (his country the UK, Paris, and Amsterdam). This made me uncomfortable because he doesn’t travel at all with his guy friends unless it’s to other uk countries or cities.

The last time we saw each other was right before his move in late 2024. He mentioned he was excited to see his friends in AUS (best friend + another friend from UK). In a blind rage, I went through his DMs and texts while he was showering. I didnt find anything, but later found out that he saw that I peeked (he brought up during a fight later on when I asked him not to hang out with his best friend anymore or it could be bad for us).

Flash forward three months from last seeing him: I meet up with her for the first time when she visits Vietnam with a girl friend. This is shortly after she moved to AUS. I had some gifts I wanted her to bring back for him. She was super funny and pretty, and it made my stomach sick.

I’d always been unsure of her, but my bf assured me they were just friends. I had a hard time also reconciling with the fact that even though they’re from different countries, they’re both native English speakers, so they know the same pop culture references, inside jokes, etc. Again, he assured me several times this was not an issue even after our fight when he confronted me for going through his phone.

Flash forward a month after meeting her in Vietnam, and they both came clean to cheating with each other the prior month. He says he is sorry, but doesnt want a future with someone who expected the worst from him and couldnt commit to living in the same place. I had told him I had no intention of moving to AUS or the UK, and assumed he was happy to move in with me in Vietnam.

Flash forward to the present, and I am still grieving what I once had. My ex prior also cheated, so I don’t know how to reconcile this. I also found out from her ex (I do some sleuthing lol) that they are still together and probably will marry soon so she can move to the uk with him after AUS. They live in a beautiful apartment by the beach. He also got a tattoo she designed for him, which was something I wanted him to do when we were together!! It seems like my misstep has turned into the largest slap in the face. I still love him even after the pain they caused, and this pains me so much.

Did I bring this onto myself?
