12 months of vegetable gardening as a first-time gardener

Last May we tore out all of our grass in our backyard and added these two raised beds in! As a first time gardener, I was winging it for the most part and overall had some wins and some losses (pretty sure I have PTSD from spider mites lol). I wasn’t sure how fall/wintering gardening would go but it went so well and I had such a surplus of broccoli and kale I was begging my neighbors to take some lol. If anyone is interested, here’s a timeline of my veggie beds from the last 12 months (minus December) in the PNW (zone 8b).

Mariposa Lily appreciation post

This is a Tolmie’s Mairposa Lily aka Cat’s ear. It’s so freaking cool, definitely my new favorite flower. I love watching the different stages as it blooms. PNW

I don’t understand having kids in today’s climate

My husband and I have been talking about if we want kids for a while. I’ve always envisioned having kids and in the perfect world, we wouldn’t be fence sitters. However I have pretty bad anxiety and I can’t even imagine bringing a child into this world right now in today’s climate. We’ve got AI data centers taking over and threatening our access to clean free water. Not to mention the extreme lack of critical thinking we’re seeing in younger generations. Our food is poisoning us with glysophate, microplastics, and cancer causing chemicals. With climate change, who knows what the world will be like in 25-30 years. Now there’s talks of another global pandemic. We live good lives for the most part with pretty solid jobs (at least for now). The future just seems so bleak. How are people doing this and not having freak outs on the daily?!

A few weeks ago I found a dead hummingbird underneath my feeder, which was very sad. I had worried it was my feeder that killed it, but I clean it frequently and have been feeding hummies for almost 10 years and have never ever found a dead hummingbird. I also have new neighbors that use large feeders in a sunny location so I’ve also been worried they aren’t cleaning their feeders enough.

However today, I noticed there was another dead hummingbird about a foot away from where I found the first one. This one looked to be dead for quite a while and likely around the timeline of the other’s death. Could they have killed each other? I’m skeptical I wouldn’t have noticed the other one but we do get a lot of feral cats that visit in our garden so maybe one moved it?

I love hummingbirds so it’s been very distressing to find two dead within a few weeks so I’m just trying to figure this out. If it was bacteria caused death would it be instantaneous where they both died immediately after drinking? I bought a new feeder just in case and have been thinking about talking to the neighbors about what I’ve found but I feel awkward because I’ve only talked to them once. Anyone have any ideas?
