Really interesting behavior: Anna’s Girl chugged hard, borb’d up, and then stared at the reflections in the glass for 10 minutes. Not in any visible distress, reacted to other birds, then fed herself and flew away. Maybe staring at the colors of the new salvias behind her?

Andean Emerald at Cocachimba, Amazonas 🇵🇪

Small, restless, and shining like a spark within the cloud forest vegetation. That is how this Andean Emerald appeared in Cocachimba, reminding us that greatness often comes in tiny forms.

Its clean white chest, iridescent head, and endless energy make every sighting a brief but unforgettable moment.

In the montane forests of northern Peru, hummingbirds are part of the landscape’s heartbeat, moving from flower to flower in a silent bond with nature.

Photographing it in 2025 was one of those calm moments that stays with you.

LPT: Mascara Wand for cleaning

Daughter saw me struggling to clean the feeder’s tiny opening, and offered one of her mascara brushes. They make cleaning so easy - and lasted all winter&spring. Pic also of how she purchases them (tub of 100 I think?)

I figured out a really cool angle to watch the hover feeders and salvias in my yard

6 eggs!!!

She had laid 3 clutches this spring!! Crazy! I can’t believe her tiny little body could make so many babies in one spring. God she must be so tired.

Hummingbirds in Colorado

I did not grow up around hummingbirds. Every time I see them, I'm fascinated. They amaze me with their acrobatics. Sometimes flying so fast that they only appear as a blur. I love that they can flap their wings so fast and actually hover quite still. Sometimes they will give you a very close fly-by, always completely in control. I wish I lived a bit closer to the mountains so that I could watch these guys every year as they pass through on their migratory route

Any hummer spottings in Michigan yet?

Any hummers in Michigan yet? I know it’s early but I just put out my feeder bc it’s over 80deg today! This is video from last year. This guy ended up claiming this feeder and would sit on top guarding it for hours at a time.

Last year when we had the doorwall open, a hummingbird flew into our house! We have 3 cats and we were all freaking out. I ended up using a blanket from the couch and holding it up to trap the bird in the window well while my partner locked up the cats. He must have been tired out because he was just calmly sitting on the window sash when I lowered the blanket and he let me gently pick him up and carry him outside. It was surreal!

First time putting up a feeder

This is my first time putting up a feeder so I don’t know if my set up is optimal. I live in SW Ohio and I know they all aren’t here just yet but I saw that it’s better to put out before to get the scouts. Is there anything I should do to get better chances. Also once they come how often are they going to come to my feeder?

Anna’s morning bath & nest collection

Sorry for the poor video quality - this is a security camera we use to keep an eye on the larger bird feeders nearby (b/c of evil squirrels). I cropped the frame to try to make things bigger, but it’s still not very clear 😟

New hummingbird drawing

Just a hummingbird I did with a 4 color bic pen. No huge story to it , but these little birds make me feel so many feelings anytime I think about them. This was 4 continuous lines, one of each color

Where did my hummingbirds go?

Mainland side of Southern Brevard County in Florida. Zone 9b/10a.

I put up 2 hummingbird feeders in January and each was quickly claimed by a bird. They both look like this one (female ruby throated maybe?) but they were definitely different birds because we’d see them both on a different feeder at the same time. Anyway they proceeded to drive away anything else that came near their feeder. Including me if my gardening brought me too close. They each showed up several times a day and all was well.

A couple of weeks ago we realized we hadn’t been seeing them. I thought March to November was prime time for these birds? Could they be nesting? Or more flowers are blooming and they prefer those to my sugar water? My husband keeps saying they’ve migrated north and I’d love to give him an explanation that proves he’s wrong. 😉

Does anybody know what might have happened?

This year our yard went to the weeds…

In the morning a few days ago, when I was outside, I heard a hummingbird very near me. I looked over and it was out at the really tall dandelion type plants, closing its beak vertically across the not quite fully open fluffy seed heads, yanking out the dandelion fluff — the whole thing, and then flinging it down as if in disgust and making a loud noise! It was very funny to watch. It did it about five times more and then it flew away.

I wish y’all could have seen it.

Will this deter hummingbirds

I feed backyard birds at several feeders and even though I have multiple watering spots for them, they like to drink out of my ant moats for my hummingbird feeders. I have only had one confirmed sighting of a hummingbird so far this year (upstate SC) though I don’t work from home so there may be visitors I’m not aware of. Will this deter the hummingbirds?
