Is destiel still only semi-canon?

Background: So I was huge into supernatural (watched it like 3x through) in middle school and then watched season 15 live in 2020, and used to be super in touch with the fandom on Tumblr and stuff. I recently started rewatching the show at 20 yrs old and kinda got sucked back into it because I needed some nostalgia/comfort while being away from home.

I know and remember from 15x18 that Castiel is canonically in love with Dean, as was confirmed by Misha Collins (and others).

I wanted to ask ppl who know a lot about this is there a canon stance on Deans perspective on this? Like have they confirmed whether or not dean reciprocated at all?

I tried to google this but all sources just say nothing really in canon but there’s ongoing debate among fandom. I personally headcanon Dean as bisexual because it just makes a lot of sense to me, but I know this isn’t canon in the show (or hasn’t been confirmed by anybody).

I was just wondering if there’s still debate going on, do you guys think anybody ever come out and confirm yes or no to this question? or have they already and I’ve missed it? (cast/crew/writers/show-runners)

I watched seasons 1-8 and forgot that season 9 was airing so I binged it right after episode 16 came out. I wasn’t online for a while and just now saw all the BTS for the New Mexico episode.

What’s the deal with the motel in all the BTS? I saw 9x13 and there’s no motel scene as far as I remember, but I have been seeing so many theory videos on my TikTok FYP about what scenes were shot at this motel.

Were there supposed to be scenes at this random motel, was that some kinda distraction, or did they shoot there and it was the diner scene or something?

I’m slightly confused and feel like I missed something. What’s going on here 😂

Here’s another rant to help cure your dooming 🤝

Queerbaiting has always been a massive issue, and productions have come under lots of scrutiny for doing it, particularly recently with the Byler incident. I won’t go into specifics because there’s too much to say about it but Stranger Things did rely on promoting the Byler vs Mileven love triangle to gain popularity among queer fans as season 5 was coming out.

After Byler was left unrequited in the finale, Stranger Things faced backlash for queerbaiting their audience and writing the respective endings for Will and Mike.

After seeing that play out in real time this year, why would the 9-1-1 production team (whoever’s behind the show/marketing) continue to allow the actors and fans to perpetuate the idea that Buddie might go canon if they have no intention of doing so?

If they have no intention of canonizing it, I believe it would be quite bad queerbait. The actors often reference Buddie and if you look at the Instagram comments on any post made by the official 9-1-1 account, almost every comment is about Buddie (I’m not even going to mention the actual writing/storylines on the show and how queer-coded Eddie is).

If they aren’t going to go anywhere with it, they should definitely have shut this down much much earlier. But they haven’t, and again, after Byler, they have to know that continuing to not deny it and let people hold hope for this, it would cause a large amount of backlash in the future if they do not make it canon.

It seems weird to think they would have witnessed the criticism on Stranger Things this year as well as Destiel in 2020 (among other ships) and continue to allow their audience to have hope Buddie will be canon if they aren’t going to do it.

I’m also aware that in the show Byler itself was up for interpretation and not a whole lot was in explicit writing except for Wills perspective. Buddie isn’t really comparable regarding actual writing/storyline, as it is more explicit and developed over time, but this rant mostly focuses on media portrayal of these ships.

Edit: also, with the new episode taking a strong political stance on ICE, I don’t believe they have any political limitations with their story lines anymore. Immediately making Buck canonically bisexual when ABC took over was another indication that nothing is really holding them back from doing what they want. I know the show was already very progressive, but these two factors solidify this for me at least.

They have literally nothing to lose at this point from making it canon, but a lot to lose from NOT making it canon. They’d lose a lot of their fan base and engagement, and now that they’ve taken a strong political stance on a very important pressing issue, then there’s really nothing they cannot do on the show. They opened the gates and there is so much potential.

If anybody has a different perspective or more to say about this I would love to hear it!

This is such a long shot but about a year ago i saw a Buddie edit to Nearly Witches (ever since we met) by panic at the disco.

I haven’t been able to find it (might be deleted off TikTok) but on the 1% chance one of you know which edit I mean it would be much appreciated if you could comment the @ 😔🙏

Here’s an anti dooming rant for you guys.

Going back to season 8, there’s an large amount of scenes with Buck that explicitly confirm Buddie from his POV and some others around him.

There are loaaaads of other scenes from S7-9 I could bring up, but I just wanted to focus on these few, as I just recently rewatched them and thought they were insane.

Tommy breaks up with Buck because he says he won’t be his last. We find out later the ENTIRE time Buck and Tommy were dating Tommy saw Eddie as competition in their relationship. If it isn’t too presumptuous it can be assumed that Tommy is talking about Eddie when he says “im not your last.”

Following this, Tommy and Buck hook up after Eddie leaves for El Paso. The morning after, they get into an argument entirely about Eddie and Bucks relationship. Just prior to this, Tommy indicated he wanted to get back together with Buck and try again. The argument ensued because Tommy implied that Eddie and Bucks relationship had been THE reason Tommy broke up with Buck. Eddie is gone, so there’s nothing keeping Buck and Tommy apart. Going back to the “im not your last” line, this is basically confirmed to be about Eddie, as Tommy wants to get back together with Buck as soon as Eddie is gone, likely because he saw Eddie as Bucks “last”. Now, with Eddie out of the way, maybe Tommy could see himself being Bucks last.

THEN Buck says Eddie is straight and Tommy fully scoffs. So it is now basically confirmed that Tommy believes Eddie is queer.

THEN Buck says he doesn’t have to have feelings for everybody he sleeps with (Tommy), and doesn’t have to sleep with everybody he has feelings for (Eddie). This is literally as blatant as you can get. Why would they even write this line if it didn’t mean anything.

They could literally have written anything else.

Why would anybody go to the bother of writing this entire scene if it wasn’t meant to introduce to the general audience the idea that Eddie might not be straight and that Buck possibly has feelings for him?

THEN the scene with Maddie in the kitchen where he says “in love with Eddie?” And she makes that face at him and kinda looks away. What is the entire point of that look and the focus on Maddie’s skeptical look if it also did not mean anything.

I feel like a lot of the time on this side of the fandom it is easy to get desensitized to these scenes, as most of us have been burned before by other ships that have queerbaited. We also analyze these scenes a lot and rewatch them so they don’t hit as hard as they did when we first saw them.

I just want to say it lowkey doesn’t get more explicit than this. I can’t say if what they’re doing with Eddies character in season 9 is definitely gay Eddie, although it is implied to be, but at least with the season 8 Buck scenes there’s like no other interpretation for the dialogue and writing.

As a contrasting example, most queerbait ships poke fun at the audience without having sincere scenes like this. They’re mostly played for laughs, but nothing about Bucks storyline in season 8 was comedic or played to the audience as queerbait jokes.

There is no point in even writing this as a story line if it isn’t going to go somewhere. It’s still kinda unresolved, as we never get to know why Maddie made that face. We do however have Tommy’s POV, and he’s a character whose entire story line on the show revolves around Buck and Eddies relationship.

Even if it doesn’t happen in season 9, it will happen eventually, or else there’s tons of scenes and story lines that genuinely make no sense. I think we just have to be patient (I know it’s been like 8 years but I think they just started planning this in season 7 and it has to build up from there).

If anybody has any thoughts on this or a different point of view pls feel free to say! I would love to talk about this or get differing opinions 🫶.
