Here to emotionally validate your Buddie shipping

Just figured you all would appreciate a complete noob to the fandom validating that you all are not exactly reaching when you see this pairing in the subtext.

I had never read a Buddie fanfic before yesterday and didn’t realize there was a huge fandom for the pairing until then. I’ve just been binge watching it while doing a boring work project since I liked Lone Star so much and the crossover episode was great. So that’s the context we’re talking about here.

Anyway, it just seemed blatant from the first episode with Eddie that they were setting him up as a romantic partner for Buck in the long run. If that’s not what the show’s writers were going for, then they’re not very good at their craft because they have so, so clearly telegraphed that from the beginning.

Like when Eddie is dating Ana and Christopher doesn’t connect with her, and they mention the zoo, and then Eddie pipes up that Buck takes Christopher there all the time.

Plus, it seems really clear that Eddie is either demisexual and/or gay as hell and doesn’t realize it yet on account of all the toxic masculinity and Catholic guilt.

And now I just watched “Buck, Bothered and Bewildered,” and literally the whole time it was obvious he was after Eddie, not Tommy. That’s the point where I cracked and looked up spoilers because Buck and Tommy getting together was NOT how I saw that going.

Anyway, thought you all might appreciate the validation, haha.

Immediate Rule Changes From Your Chain of Command (Buck Followed It, and You Should, Too)

First, thank you to all the members that make up this subreddit and help shape it for what it is. We appreciate the discussions, the memes, the fan edits, and of course all (most of) the thirst.

With another season under our belts and a lot of feedback from our members, though, it has become apparent there is a need to revamp the subreddit to keep it a welcome space for people who want to ship Buddie in peace. For most of you, this will result in no changes for you at all. For those of you who believe these roles are not in the best interest of the community as a whole, we can only ask that you reflect on your reasoning for continuing to engage with this subreddit.

Due to frequent misuse of our report reasons and repeated violations of our rules, we have chosen to simplify and condense the rules to hopefully be easier for you to understand. Look them over, but we’ll discuss the biggest changes here.

Reminders & Rule Changes

  • This is r/buddie**, not** r/buddiecanon**.**
    • While we understand the fanon to canon of it all plays a large part in our fandom, it is not THEE fandom, or the reason most of us choose to interact with each other here. Feeling pessimistic about the ship or a storyline is okay to express, but it cannot be the main purpose to come to this sub, so we will start issuing warnings, actioning, and redirecting you to either your personal social media blogs or r/buddieuncensored when it becomes too much. This is a community and not a blog post.
  • Disruptive and antisocial fandom behaviors will not be tolerated.
    • People come to this sub because they are fans of the ship, the show, and the characters, and they want to interact with people who share that enthusiasm. If you meet their enthusiasm with unsolicited negativity, they will not have a reason to believe you are actually a fan of these things, and neither will we. Your goal should never be to make people less excited or enthusiastic or hopeful; whether you’re “a Buddie” or not, this kind of behavior will be treated like you’re an anti-shipper trying to disrupt the subreddit because that’s what you’re doing. You may still share your frustrations and anxieties about ongoing storylines or the show’s future, but we expect you to read the room. If the tone of the post or the comment chain is positive, find another post or comment chain to be negative in; you are still free to agree with other users expressing frustration in their comment chains, though. Bad faith discourse, trolling, and ragebait are also among the behaviors we will action. Additionally, off topic discussion in posts and comment chains identified as trying to ‘hijack’ discourse to move it in directions unrelated to the subject matter will be actioned as necessary. A recent example of this involved an episode synopsis thread leading to arguments about queerbaiting where the synopsis was not discussed at all, for instance.
  • 'Treat Cast and Crew with Respect' means recognizing you're not psychic.
    • While most of you seem to grasp the obvious parts of this rule like not speculating about someone’s sexuality or participating in celebrity gossip, we have noticed a problematic trend of assuming intent or reaching conclusions about the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of cast and crew. Ascribing malintent to anyone involved with the show will not be tolerated. In the event of a scandal or the emergence of new ‘evidence’ of such, moderators will offer guidance for what discourse will be allowed.
  • A Note About Queerbaiting Discourse
    • Our official stance on queerbaiting is that it is a theoretical concern until ‘canon’’ becomes impossible, either at the end of the show or because of the departure of one or both actors. Accusations that the cast and crew are 'already' queerbaiting will not be tolerated moving forward, as it involves attributing malintent to cast and/or crew outside the scope of their official statements, and is therefore in violation of our "Treat Cast & Crew with Respect" rule. Comments referencing queerbaiting will be filtered for manual review and removed if they are found to be in violation. This does not mean that you are not allowed to discuss these concerns at all - we will continue to approve posts about queerbaiting concerns and related topics, such as "what needs to happen for you to be comfortable continuing to watch the show?"

What will be done differently?

  • !goodvibes - a new command to request the doomers stay out of your space
    • Our goal is to make this subreddit a fun space again. People who enjoy the show and its storylines should not feel reluctant to post, or have to worry they're going to be browbeaten into submission by disappointed 'fans.' We appreciate that this won't happen overnight, though, so we have decided to implement a !goodvibes feature for new submissions. If you make a post and include !goodvibes somewhere in the title or body of the post, this will trigger AutoModerator to post a warning that negativity in the post will not be tolerated. Comments arguing with your positive takes will be removed from these posts, and users who cannot appreciate your request they not try to drag you down will be actioned. (If you forget to include it in the post body, please message a moderator and we will manually add the warning as a stickied comment for you).
  • Changes in how we moderate.
    • Now that the rules have been clarified so a lot of this disruptive behavior doesn't fall into a gray area where it's not against the 'letter of the law' but is against the spirit, we will be more rigorously removing comments and actioning users who are disruptive and show an unwillingness to adapt. This won't impact most of you directly.
    • Hit dogs holler: If you disagree with the rules and feel that you should be able to disrupt the sub, spread misery, or to treat the cast and crew of this show with disrespect—this was never the space that could accommodate you.

Besides the big elephant that is yet to be addressed, I think I finally get Eddie's S9 arc and it's actually pretty amazing and also very consistent. This was the season of Eddie's relationship with the "Chain of Command" and his empathy and the writers deserve some credit for that.

Now, yeah, Eddie is still in the closet, the way I see it is that they've firmly established he doesn't wanna date women, we don't know why exactly, maybe we'll find out in the next season, and I definitely have a problem with how his NDE in the finale episode was not about him but actually in service of Athena's storyline, but overall, S9 was Eddie's season and I'm sure most of us agree. As for the stabbing, maybe they'll address it next season. Like how in the S4 finale, Eddie's NDE was from Buck's POV but then in S5, it had major repercussions for Eddie's character. So I guess we'll have to wait and see.

As for S9, EDDIE DIAZ DID HAVE A VERY BEAUTIFUL AND WELL THOUGHT OUT ARC. I was so caught up in waiting for a payoff to the subplots about Eddie's absolute repulsion to dating women, I couldn't see and appreciate what was right in front of me. Hear me out.

This season we’ve seen Eddie—who's always been very reliant on the chain of command of it all—consistently being thrown in situations where he struggles with the credibility and the faith he can place in institutions & systems (that are supposed to heal and help people). It began with churches/organized religion in Dia de Muertos, then later law enforcement, legal institutions, social workers....with how they failed Abigail, Buck, Esteban and the other immigrants, possibly Theo too which he saw as an inevitability. He becomes disillusioned with these institutions/the system at times, after watching them fail the exact same people he and his team have worked so hard to save (imo this also ties back a little to his PTSD arc from S5, where he saved his teammates but none of it mattered, bc they all died anyway) and despite the constant setbacks and discouragement, he just never gives up. He keeps trying to help people bc despite everything he has been through, he hasn't become cold, he just has an unlimited amount of empathy in his heart, and he extends it to people even when they don't totally deserve it. He is the light in the darkness. This has been a consistent theme for him since S9E5 to S9E18. He started the season with developing a healthy relationship with grief and helping Abigail and ended the season with quite literally changing the fate of Esteban's life for the better by asking Ramon&Helena to help him figure something out.

Also, the constant mention of "chain of command" by Buck to tease Eddie is so much more important than a running gag in my opinion bc despite the system continuously failing people and Eddie being heartbroken about it, he still sticks to the damn Chain of Command. BUT his chain of command isn't any institution exactly, it's his people. His 118. He sees the Chain of Command as a support system that builds people up when they need saving and shields them from the heat that might come their way, and he has found that in the 118. He spent the last two seasons being beaten down by life, that eventually led to him feeling like he was stuck in a pit of grief, self doubt and self hatred, and then S9 has him building himself back up and being the light in the darkness for others as people have been for him, and that was his S9 arc.You can say it should've been fleshed out better (I agree), you can not like it, but to say he didn't have an arc at all is unfair. The writers did a wonderful job of giving Eddie a coherent arc and even if it's a little different from what we were expecting, it's still very important for Eddie's character.

As for Buddie and Gay Eddie, this season unarguably got them closer than ever. They were willing to kill for each other, and a lot of things Buck went through, the writers made sure to explicitly highlight Eddie's POV and how he's feeling about what Buck is going through, like last season it was Buck's POV which was highlighted when Eddie was going through something. The recovery arc in particular framed him as the spouse and then Theo's storyline set up Eddie's very active involvement in raising him in S10 which lines up with what Ryan and Oliver have said in interviews.

I've said this a hundred times, the writers have written themselves into a corner with their storylines, and the corner has only gotten smaller and smaller and I think the writers are aware that there's almost no wiggling room left to still portray them as "just friends". They've established neither guy wants to date, and Oliver, Tim and Ryan have all said Eddie is going to be a HUGE part in the Buck-Theo storyline. Not to mention, Ryan kind of defined the idea of Eddie reacting to Buck possibly being in love with Eddie as its almost like when something is so close you can't see the bigger picture, that its right under your nose but you can't see it and that says a LOT about where they're in their relationship and what the future holds. So yeah, it's definitely not over, in fact we are on the runway, the Buddie plane is about to take off!!
