Shopping for a new JD and need some advice....

Shopping for a new JD and need some advice....

I need some advice here! Lowe's has a 0% interest for 48 months deal going on through April 8th, and I'm seriously considered buying a new lawn mower. I was looking into the John Deere S180, 54" (24hp), but upon doing some research on ChatGPT I've discovered this model doesn't do well on hills due to the transmission not being built for vertical inclines. My current mower is a JD D110 and it does fairly well. I should note that I have to cut a large portion of our yard vertically rather than horizontally due to the slope / incline.

With that being said, I keep reading that "zero turns" do not do well on hills either and are primarily built for flatter yards. I'm in a dilemma. A zero turn would be nice, but if it won't climb our hill it's somewhat useless and will be a major waste of money. I'd like some advice or recommendations regarding your current mower, and / or anyone's experience with zero turn mowers on an incline.

Pic of my yard added for clarity. (It's steeper in real life than this picture indicates.)

Reseeding

I need your opinion. I live in the northeast and had my lawn reseeded a few days ago. They first thatched and raked out the dead grass from winter. They then dropped starter, seeds and finally top soil around the lawn. I’ve never reseeded so not sure what it’s supposed to look like and noticed the soil they used had a lot of stones and tiny rocks. My question is: does this look normal for a reseeding job or did I get ripped off? How long will it take to see some new green grass and results? Should I be doing anything other than watering?

What should I buy?

What should I buy?

Hey all! I’ve been doing days and days worth of research on exactly what to buy for my yard. It’s a very bumpy 3 acres and there’s always tons of pinecones and roots and holes and pine straw. Really tearing up the old John Deere LA120 and I’d like to get a higher-end zero turn. Spent 5 hours compiling a ton of specs as pictured here. I’m leaning towards the Ariens option or maybe the JD Z530R, and I’m planning to go test drive several of these. What’s your opinion and experience in this category?

Found this old snapper riding mower on marketplace. Went to check it out… it runs and functions like it should. Price is $150. Old working farm that is making room in barn for new equipment. Should i pick it up?

Need advice on first riding mower

Hey all,

Just bought a property that’s about a full acre including the house. Looking to buy a riding mower of some type but would like some guidance. Don’t really want to buy from a box store but also want to make sure I get a fabricated deck and a mower that I can do the “common” maintenance on myself.

As of now I’m looking at the following:

2026 Gravely ZT 42 - 18hp Kawasaki FR600V, w/42" Fabricated Deck - local dealer sale

CubCadet Ultima Z2 42 OR 50. Both with Kawasaki engines and fabricated decks. Both of these are at Home Depot (would rather purchase from a dealer for service reasons, but the prices are attractive and they seem to have great ratings)

Looked into John Deere but it seems you can only get a fabricated deck if you get a higher end model

Obviously I’m open to any and all suggestions

Thanks in advance!

GCV190 won’t start

Mower sat for a couple months and won’t start. Changed the gas, spark plug, air filter, cleaned the carb, still nothing. Any suggestions?

Updating Hours?

Just changed from the original key pad style to the below key style ignition. Is there anywhere to get the hours adjusted so I can keep track for the oil change/service? Or will I have to just keep track on paper?

FYI, Mechanic in a Bottle completely cured my surging/idle-hunting/sputtering mower

I've used Mechanic in a Bottle at the beginning of mowing season in the past and had great results, but had started using less and hadn't gotten a new bottle in a while, so I only had an ounce or so left. I used that during a warm spell a month or more ago, but since then the mower started taking many pulls to start and was also surging/idle-hunting the entire time it was running (i.e. every few seconds the engine would rev up and down, up and down, over and over).

I was considering taking it in for its periodic $100+ tune up but then thought I'd give MIAB a more solid shot first. Bought a new bottle, poured two ounces into the fairly empty gas tank, pressed the primer bulb about 8 times to get the fluid into the carb (as per the instructions) and let it sit overnight. Primed it another 8 times the next day and let it sit for 20 minutes, then went out and pulled the cord, and...it started instantly. And ran perfectly. Woohoo! I'll definitely be going back to full yearly treatments now.

I don't own stock in whoever makes the stuff, by the way — I'm just a lazy-but-now-enthusiastic-again admirer sharing my reconversion experience for anyone else who might be dealing with a mower that's sullen or unhappy, especially coming out of the winter months.

Zero Turn, 5 Acres, Overwhelmed

I’m overwhelmed with the amount of brands and models available.

5 acre lot (home yet to be built):

Currently 1/2 woods 1/2 tall grass prairie.

Lot is generally flat but not smooth (no farming ruts, just land that hasn’t been occupied in 20 years).

We will be having the grass and underbrush cleared via forestry muncher. Long term the mower will be used on about 1 acre of “lawn” and 4 acres of the woods/prairie mix.

Budget: 10k

Priorities (in this order):

Durability,

Comfort,

Serviceability,

Speed,

possibility for attachments (like a front blade?).

Is suspension great or gimmick - is a good seat enough?

Hello do you have any suggestions for a budget lightweight self-propelled mower for small sloped yard?

Hello do you have any suggestions for a budget lightweight self-propelled mower for small sloped yard?

I live on one side of a duplex so I only need to mow three sides, my front and back are small but there's a pretty nasty slope on my side. I'm looking for a small self propelled lightweight mower, do you have any suggestions?

Need advice on my Honda 160cm

Need advice on my Honda 160cm

so the mower will not start and I tried all the usual things to get it running with no luck. I suspect that the carburetor is not opening up due to this push pin behind it. I assume its to keep it in time with the engine, although im not confident its the main problem, however I am very curious about how it works. when I spin the flywheel, the rockers move in sequence and yet the carburetor push pin does not move. any idea how to diagnose push pin?

Anyone here into lawn mower racing?

I've been getting more into lawn mower racing lately and it feels like there's not really one solid place where everyone hangs out online.

I see builds, questions, and clips scattered all over, but no real central community.

Is there a main place people go that I'm missing?

If not, I started putting together a small forum for mower racing - stuff like builds, tech help, events, race schedules, and just general discussion

It's still new, but I'd like to grow it into a legit hub for racers and builders.

Would anyone here actually be interested in something like that?
