Riccardo was found wandering alone in the desert with severely torn paw pads and foxtails covering his body, yet he has shown an unwaveringly gentle and trusting nature with people. Despite the pain and hardship he endured, he seeks out kindness and responds with soft, calm affection, as if still believing in human goodness.

In playgroup, he offers polite, gentle greetings and moves through the yard with a quiet social ease. He is tolerant and respectful with other dogs, engaging without tension or conflict. Even after everything he’s been through, Riccardo continues to show a soft, resilient spirit and a steady willingness to connect.

✨️ Behavior notes: Despite one foster reporting aggression and biting on 3/21/26, staff observed no aggression during intake and noted the dog was friendly and easy to handle. Throughout his stay, he consistently demonstrated social, playful, and affectionate behavior with both people and other dogs. He was repeatedly described as easy to leash, puppy-like, food motivated, and eager for attention, often jumping up for hugs. In playgroups, he displayed playful and social behavior, with only minor barrier reactivity noted toward one dog on one occasion. He participated regularly in playgroups and enrichment sessions and was routinely re-kenneled without issue.

⚕️Medical Notes:

The dog was treated with antibiotics for a suspected upper respiratory infection and showed improvement with no nasal discharge noted on recheck. Follow-up radiographs were performed to evaluate a suspected bone cancer lesion in the left front leg. Imaging showed significant improvement in both the bone lesion and previous lung changes, with no obvious nodules present. Findings suggested the issue was more consistent with a healing bone injury rather than bone cancer. The dog recovered well from sedation, showed no signs of respiratory illness, and additional recheck radiographs were

✨️ Notes: Baby has shown generally social and manageable behavior in shelter care, with some increasing stress over time.

Early on, they were easy to leash and walk, explored calmly in the play yard, and accepted handler interaction without actively seeking attention. They also adjusted well to a kennel mate and were observed soliciting attention at times during kennel walks.

In playgroup, the dog tolerated other dogs, offered appropriate corrections and warnings, and showed some nervous behaviors. However, stress-related behaviors have been noted, including exit-seeking and a brief reactive response when redirected.

Despite ongoing enrichment and playgroup participation, recent observations indicate a decline in kennel coping, including spinning and height-seeking behavior that persists throughout observation, suggesting increasing shelter stress.

✨️ Behavior notes:

Artie presents as a friendly, social, and well-adjusted dog with a medium energy level.

He was easy to handle from the start, greeting staff calmly, allowing leashing without issue, and even seeking out affection during handling. While he needed a bit of guidance walking to the yard, he remained cooperative and responsive.

In the play yard, Artie showed excellent social skills with other dogs. He greeted them appropriately, displayed relaxed and loose body language, and integrated smoothly into the group. He engaged in healthy, playful behaviors like chase and wrestling, while staying loose and wiggly—signs of a dog who is comfortable and enjoying himself. He also showed a nice balance of independence and sociability, taking breaks to explore and then returning to play or seek attention from handlers.

Overall, Artie is:

• Dog-friendly (especially with large dogs)

• Affectionate and people-oriented

• Playful but not overly high-energy

• Behaviorally appropriate with no signs of aggression

He would benefit from continued socialization and confidence building, but he already demonstrates a strong, adoptable temperament and is suitable for public adoption.

Rapid rate of euthanasia at Devore Animal Shelter. Many dogs are reportedly given as little as 5 days to find placement after becoming available—far too little time for rescue or adoption efforts.

There is also a disturbing pattern of dogs being labeled as “aggressive,” while video evidence circulating publicly often shows otherwise. This raises serious concerns about how behavioral assessments are being conducted, including whether staff have proper training and certification.

Even more concerning—these evaluations appear to happen only at intake, when dogs are under extreme stress. Industry standards support reassessing dogs after they’ve had time to decompress, as behavior can change significantly once they feel safe.

📌 What we are demanding:

• Transparency on staff training and certification

• Clear behavioral assessment protocols, including reassessments

• More time for dogs—a minimum of 12–14 days to find placement

The public is paying attention. There must be accountability, transparency, and humane practices.

✨️ NOTES: Dog friendly sweet, social, and people-focused girl with a big heart and gentle temperament.

▪︎ She did wonderfully in dog playgroup, engaging in friendly, playful interactions with dogs of all sizes and energy levels. She was especially tolerant and easygoing, even when other dogs were more forward in their behavior, and consistently chose to check in with people for affection and attention instead of focusing on rough play.

▪︎ She has also been tested with both male and female dogs and did well in each setting—offering calm, polite greetings, including kisses and gentle sniffing, and showing no negative reactions. When a male dog mounted her, she remained patient and tolerant, without responding defensively. Overall, she presents as socially confident and stable around other dogs.

She is very affectionate with people, loves head scratches and pets, and is highly people-oriented. She knows “sit” and “down,” walks nicely on leash without pulling, takes treats gently, and is easy to handle when entering and exiting her kennel.

euro is no longer on a microchip hold. the SECOND his hold was up… he was put on the euthanasia list. like?? no grace period, no extra time, just straight to the list.

and this boy??? he is pure entertainment.

he’s a brindle, pocket-sized wrecking ball of love with the energy of someone who just drank 3 iced coffees and heard the word “park.” he does not walk into a room… he ARRIVES. full body wiggles, zero personal space, immediate bestie vibes.

you make eye contact? congrats, that’s your dog now (at least in his mind).

he’s about 3, unaltered, likely an american bulldog mix, and built like a little meatball with legs. he LOVES people. like deeply, dramatically, enthusiastically loves people. the kind of dog who thinks every moment is the best moment of his life.

but the kennel? yeah… it’s not it for him.

he’s bouncing off the walls not because he’s “too much” but because he has nowhere to put all that personality. this is a dog who needs movement, laughter, connection… not a countdown.

he shouldn’t be sitting there waiting to die right after waiting for someone who never came.

Peggy is a 2-year-old small female Staffy Bull Terrier mix who arrived at the shelter as a stray. She is currently listed as Urgent – Most At Risk and needs help now.

⚕️Her intake notes report subconjunctival hemorrhage in both eyes, believed to have occurred after repeated catch pole use during impound. Experiences like this can cause both physical injury and deep fear, which is important when understanding her current behavior.

✨️ Behavior Notes:

Peggy is being labeled as “defensive” in the kennel — barking, growling, showing teeth, and displaying fearful body language (tucked tail, pinned ears, whale eye).

But in high-stress shelter environments, fear is often mistaken for aggression — especially after a traumatic intake.

During an in-person visit:

• Peggy did not lunge or charge

• She kept her distance and observed

• After being given space, she slowly approached for treats

• She showed caution, not intent to harm

👉 This matters. Peggy is showing a fear response, not aggression.

Peggy was originally scheduled for euthanasia on 5/4 @ 2PM

With multiple dogs scheduled to lose their lives in a matter of days, the urgency for reform is undeniable. Greater public awareness and advocacy are critical; collective voices have the power to influence policy and demand accountability.

🇺🇸 The United States must do better. We need stronger breeding regulations, improved shelter standards, and a meaningful shift toward no-kill practices. Shelters should provide proper medical care and thorough behavioral assessments—giving every dog a fair and humane chance at life. These institutions are meant to protect and rehabilitate, not move dogs through the system for the sake of convenience. Dogs deserve time, compassion, and the opportunity to be saved. 🐾❤️
