From Annals of the Silent Pines (Fragment recovered from a burnt reliquary, c. 1161)

From Annals of the Silent Pines (Fragment recovered from a burnt reliquary, c. 1161)

"The pride of the North was broken in the marshes near Varnai, where the sky hung low and heavy as a shroud. We thought to catch the heathens at their hearths, but the village was a snare set by the Old Gods. As the heavy horses foundered in the peat, the very thickets seemed to breathe; from the shadows of the hovels rose the forest-men, their faces painted in the ash of oak-fires. No prayers could stay the fury of their iron axes. Brother Ulrich fell first, his throat opened by a woodsman’s blade before he could draw his mace. Then came the rain of javelins, thick as the winter sleet, pinning man and mount to the black earth. Of the twelve who rode forth with the blessing of the Bishop, only a squire escaped into the deep woods to tell of the carnage. Behind him, the village fires died out, replaced by the rhythmic beat of drums and the high, terrible songs of the pagans over our dead."

Stunning 22mm modern game using What a cowboy/cartel rules in Prague Wargames Club. 🔥

Wargaming in Czechia - Stunning 22mm modern game using What a cowboy/cartel rules in Prague Wargames Club. 🔥 If you're from Czechia and want to join the community, feel free to DM/comment and I will navigate you to the Czech historical wargaming group. 😉 Pics from Andreas. 📷

Also, small AAR from Andreas: We tried "What a Cartel" by Too Fat Lardies. It’s a modern-day variation on "What a Cowboy." The game is just as fun as the cowboy version, but the Ukraine theme doesn’t really fit. It’s more geared toward individual "soldiers"—that is, battles between drug cartels and the police and similar shenanigans. For the Ukrainian battlefield, we’ll stick with INX, which fits better, but we liked the rules for how vehicles and tanks are handled (basically very similar to CoC), and since INX’s tanks are pretty half-baked, we’ll run it using these rules.

The scenario itself was about heroic Ukrainians freeing DHL employees from Russian clutches, which they succeeded in doing. Although a Russian T-80 arrived and managed to destroy a Ukrainian Bradley, the DHL employees managed to escape into a parked red Charger.

Wargaming is one of the most rewarding hobbies in the world, combining creativity, strategy, and community. But let’s be honest—staring at those shelves of miniatures and rulebooks can be overwhelming. In this video, I break down the "barrier to entry" and show you exactly what you need to go from a total beginner to rolling dice on the tabletop.

Whether you’re eyeing Warhammer 40k, Historical wargames, or indie skirmish games, these are the universal steps every player needs to take.
