Leaning hard into that Dark Age feel—muddy tones, worn iron, no clean finishes. These guys shouldn’t look pretty… they should look like they just stepped off a longship.

More coming soon.

This is exactly the kind of mess I wanted — shieldwall holding, axes coming in, and somebody about to have a real bad afternoon.

The playtest packet is getting close.

Still a WIP, but I’m really happy with how the face and beard are turning out so far. Trying to keep these guys looking rough, weathered, and mean instead of clean fantasy heroes.

Also getting more comfortable with the Two Thin Coats paints every model I finish.

Three men who look like they’ve survived shipwrecks, winter starvation, and at least two murders apiece.

Exactly the kind of people you do not want stepping off a longship onto your shore.

Norse warband coming together for Oaths & Banners. Axes, mail, bad intentions, and absolutely no interest in diplomacy.

Me and GF taking the plunge lol

Got the rule book for Christmas but just haven't had time to get the models but with the newest Dark Age Irish and dogs, we pulled the trigger haha. She just had to have her 8 war hounds all named Dogbert. So naturally I figured why not give Dogberts 1-8 something to do and get the Normans!

Can any one suggest a place to get some like models for the healers? Also we would like villagers.

First historical mini

First time painting a non-GW mini outside of the occasional commission. Really impressed with the quality on Victrix stuff. Used Two Thin coats flesh wash for the first time and will thin it in future as it made him swarthier than I intended. Still, happy with him as a nicer end of tabletop, and it was fast to do!

Help with WYSEWYG on Norman Warbands?

So I built my models before reading any list building or rules. My unpainted models should be easy enough for to correct, for example the guy with the spear and sword. Btw, I paint the shields separate, I like the pose and I was thinking of putting a shield on his back. But reading the rules I now know her can’t have a spear a shied and it’s wysiwyg. So either count the spear as a jevaline or remove the spear and put a shield instead.

I suppose the same wit the horseman, I have two with spears and I put sheathed swords on. I guess I can either pluck off the swords or count the spears as javelins and have the additional hand weapon. But that would be extra points bend used up. Any thoughts or ideas?

Few more filthy Norse bastards added to the warband.

Look like they’ve spent the last six months sleeping in mud, drinking ditch water, and arguing over who gets the first axe swing.

Exactly how I wanted them.

PLAYTESTERS WANTED Oaths & Banners — Dark Age Skirmish Wargame

PLAYTESTERS WANTED Oaths & Banners — Dark Age Skirmish Wargame

I’m looking for a few serious external playtesters for Oaths & Banners, a Dark Age tabletop skirmish game currently in active development through Hexwerks Studios.

The game focuses on:

* shieldwalls

* collapsing nerve

* small battlefield parties

* command pressure

* brutal local melees

* Vikings, Saxons, Normans, and Irish warbands

Core mechanics include:

* alternating party activations

* Courage & Wavering systems

* Shieldwall mechanics

* combined melees

* scenario-driven battles

* campaign-style household warbands

Gameplay is designed around:

“holding ground, preserving nerve, seizing momentum, and deciding when the raid matters more than the clash.”

Current playtest focus:

* onboarding clarity

* combat flow

* warband construction

* scenario balance

* Shieldwall interactions

* overall battlefield feel

The game is:

* miniature agnostic

* designed primarily for 28mm

* inspired by gritty Dark Age warfare rather than high fantasy superheroes

If you like games such as:

* Saga

* Lion Rampant

* Ravenfeast

* Mordheim

* older Warhammer skirmish/campaign systems

…you’ll probably feel right at home here.

I’m specifically looking for people willing to:

* actually get games on the table

* provide honest criticism

* test edge cases

* break rules interactions

* report usability issues

Not just:

“Looks cool.”

Comment or DM if interested and I’ll get you the current playtest packet.

From Annals of the Silent Pines (Fragment recovered from a burnt reliquary, c. 1161)

From Annals of the Silent Pines (Fragment recovered from a burnt reliquary, c. 1161)

"The pride of the North was broken in the marshes near Varnai, where the sky hung low and heavy as a shroud. We thought to catch the heathens at their hearths, but the village was a snare set by the Old Gods. As the heavy horses foundered in the peat, the very thickets seemed to breathe; from the shadows of the hovels rose the forest-men, their faces painted in the ash of oak-fires. No prayers could stay the fury of their iron axes. Brother Ulrich fell first, his throat opened by a woodsman’s blade before he could draw his mace. Then came the rain of javelins, thick as the winter sleet, pinning man and mount to the black earth. Of the twelve who rode forth with the blessing of the Bishop, only a squire escaped into the deep woods to tell of the carnage. Behind him, the village fires died out, replaced by the rhythmic beat of drums and the high, terrible songs of the pagans over our dead."

Game of Pillage, all miniatures from Victrix.

Weapon options for Early Saxon warband

Hello,

I just bought the Early Saxon warband as was looking for recommendations on weapon options. I noticed spears are free in the builder, so is that an indication they should be spear focused? Thanks.
