What's your go-to method for finding things

Hey everyone, 29M here. One thing I've always struggled with living in the city is finding local events and things to do. I'm not on any social media (Reddit is pretty much it for me), and whenever I ask around, the answer is always "just check Instagram" — which isn't super helpful if you're trying to avoid downloading yet another app.

My current approach is pretty low-tech: I just go for walks and pop into whatever spots look interesting or have a good vibe. It works sometimes, but I feel like I'm missing out on a lot.

Curious how others stay in the loop — what are your go-to methods for finding out what's happening around you?

NYC's Monday Night Lineup

We all know that Monday has a reputation. It's the villain of the week, the alarm clock you didn't ask for, and the reason Sunday evenings feel like a countdown. But New York has a funny way of making even Monday the best night of your week — and this lineup is proof. A free comedy show, a drunk Shakespeare performance that the New York Times called five stars, and a legendary poetry slam that has been shaking up NYC stages for 35 years. Here's everything happening:

FREE COMEDY SHOW + FREE DRINK Every Monday | Rodney's Comedy Club, Upper East Side | Free (1 drink minimum at happy hour prices) | 16+

Free comedy. Free cocktail. A one-drink minimum at happy hour prices. That is genuinely one of the best deals in this city and it happens every single Monday. Comedy Mob brings together a rotating lineup of both professional and up-and-coming comedians from the NYC scene, and past surprise drop-ins have included John Oliver, Ronny Chieng, and Jim Gaffigan. You show up, you laugh, you sip a free cocktail courtesy of the show's sponsor, and you leave wondering why you ever stayed home on a Monday. The answer is that you had no good reason — and now you definitely don't. Tickets: eventbrite.com/e/1100322346759

DRUNK SHAKESPEARE Multiple dates | The Ruby Theatre, Midtown | 21+

Here is the premise: five professional actors gather in a hidden library. One of them drinks five shots of whiskey. Then they all attempt to perform a Shakespearean tragedy together. The four sober actors try to keep things on track. They do not always succeed. Every single show is different depending on who is drinking and what they're drinking, which means no two nights are ever the same. The New York Times gave it five stars, Slate Magazine called it the best thing to ever happen to theatre, and Time Out gave it a five out of five. Craft cocktails are available at the full bar throughout the show. This one is an absolute classic NYC experience that somehow never gets old. Tickets: eventbrite.com/e/686320120957

NUYORICAN BOWERY SLAM Every Monday | Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery, Manhattan | $20

The legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe has temporarily moved their iconic slam series to the Bowery Poetry Club while their building undergoes renovation, and the energy has not skipped a beat. Every Monday night, poets get three minutes and one original poem per round to blow the roof off the room — no props, no musical accompaniment, just words. Judges are randomly pulled from the audience, scores run from 0 to 10, and the top poets from round one advance to round two. The winner takes home $20 cash and a spot in the monthly Final Friday Slam. Doors open at 6:30PM, slam runs from 7 to 9PM. Come to watch or come to compete — either way, you're walking into one of the most culturally important rooms in New York City. Tickets: eventbrite.com/e/779444638897

NYC This Saturday: Work on Your Side Project, Eat Through Williamsburg, Then Dance Until 4AM in Brooklyn

You know those Saturdays where you wake up with zero plans and somehow end up having the best day of your month? This Saturday, April 4th, is one of those days — except we're doing the planning for you. Start the afternoon productively, eat your way through Williamsburg, and close out the night dancing to salsa in Brooklyn. Here's the full game plan:

SIDE PROJECT SESSION Saturday, April 4 | 1–4PM

You know that project you've been meaning to work on? The one living rent-free in the back of your brain? Side Project Studios NYC is giving you a designated time and space to actually make progress on it. Show up, share what you're working on, settle into a focused work session, and optionally share how it went at the end. It's the kind of low-key, supportive afternoon that makes you feel like you actually have your life together — and honestly, that feeling alone is worth showing up for. Free to attend, and a great way to kick off your Saturday before things get a little more chaotic later in the day. RSVP: partiful.com/e/iUvznrPzvi2g1dvR6tko

WILLIAMSBURG PIZZA CRAWL Saturday, April 4 | Starting at 3PM | Free to join

Here is your excuse to eat an unreasonable amount of pizza in one afternoon and call it a cultural experience. The NYC Foodies Club is leading a four-stop crawl through some of Williamsburg's best slices — starting at Fini Pizza for classic NY-style, then Leo for wood-fired pies, then Rosa's for a dependable neighborhood staple, and finishing at Best Pizza (yes, that's the actual name, and yes, it lives up to it) where you can end on a Grandma slice that will make every pizza you've had before feel like a personal insult. The crawl runs about four hours, it's completely free to join, and you only pay for what you eat. Bring your friends, your appetite, and comfortable shoes. RSVP: partiful.com/e/BZOT83QOWEaaMkDGo5V9

I LOVE SALSA NYC Saturday, April 4 | 8PM – 4AM | LK Lounge, Brooklyn | $25 Early Bird / $30 Door

After all that pizza and productivity, the only logical next step is dancing until 4 in the morning. I Love Salsa NYC is taking over LK Lounge in Brooklyn for Easter Saturday and the lineup is not playing around — DJ Coochie, Riggo Suave, DJ Big Nito, and a full roster of DJs keeping the floor moving all night long. The format is 70% salsa, 30% everything else, which means bachata, merengue, Latin classics, and non-stop energy from start to finish. Early bird tickets are $25 online, and if you want to make a real night of it, section packages are available for groups. This is the kind of event that turns a regular Saturday into a story you're still telling next week. Tickets: eventbrite.com/e/1981266778268

Productivity at 1PM. Pizza at 3PM. Salsa until 4AM. New York, you really did that.

Here's whats happening early this week

If you've been using "it's a weeknight" as an excuse to stay home, this week is calling you out. From a spelling bee where bad spellers are welcome, to a $5 comedy show that might be the deal of the year, to a live audition night that's pure controlled chaos — New York is doing what it does best. Here's your lineup:

SPELLING BEE AT TUFFET Monday, March 23 | 7:30PM

Tuffet is throwing their very first spelling bee and here's the best part — you do not have to be a good speller. Seriously. Show up, grab a drink, give it your best shot, and watch your neighbors absolutely butcher words they learned in third grade. It's the most fun you'll have on a Monday without even trying. RSVP: partiful.com/e/39QbLogqsSnEZGfTjNnj

WE'RE NEVER DOING THIS AGAIN Tuesday, March 24 | Doors 7PM, Show 7:30PM | $5

Bold claim. We'll see about that. Four comics — Simon Bloch, Lauren Davis, Nora Jeffries, and Ramsey Daniels — are taking the stage for one night only. Five dollars. That's it. You've spent more on a MetroCard top-up and had a significantly worse time. Come laugh, come loud, come early. Tickets: partiful.com/e/84Vq3OUq3xIWj04RN97b

LIVE AUDITIONS — MARCH MADNESS Wednesday, March 25 | The Rose | Hosted by Dan Smith

March Madness, but make it a night out. Dan Smith is hosting live auditions at The Rose and the energy in that room is going to be unlike anything else happening in the city that night. Real people, real nerves, real moments. The kind of Wednesday you'll still be talking about on Friday. Tickets: posh.vip/e/live-auditions-march-madness
