Jose’s Deli on Franklin seems to have dumped their cat (in bad shape)

I know Jose’s Deli on the north end of Franklin got new ownership recently. Apparently the cat did not make the transition, as they dumped her outside last night. Not in great condition.

A reminder that bodega cats don’t usually live the lives that people like to glamorize on socials.

App that tracks which blocks you've walked

I've always wanted to walk every block of the city but knew the overhead of tracking those walks would be a pain, so over the last couple months I made an app that checks off each block once you've walked it. Some friends wanted to try it so I just uploaded it to the App Store.

It works for all 5 boroughs and you can turn on passive tracking so that your blocks are tracked without opening the app. There's also a leaderboard so you can see how your stats compare to other New Yorkers.

The app is called WalkNYC and it's completely free. It's only on iOS right now but I'm looking into porting it to Android. Would love any feedback you all have!

Food Cart Overcharge

Hi everyone,

I bought a hot dog for $6 from a cart outside of Brooklyn Steel in Greenpoint/Williamsburg last Friday, and the next day they added an unauthorized $60 tip. The transaction has gone through to Haddida Halal Foods. Has anyone had a similar experience with a vendor at this location, or to Haddida Halal Foods, or knows whether the same vendors show up for each event at Brooklyn Steel? I'm trying to dispute with my bank but I need to show some proof of contact, or purchase, or similar experiences from others. I really cannot afford a $66 hot dog lol.

Thanks in advance!!

June Hobby Guide: looking to fill some gaps...

I've gotten some great input from Bushwick redditors in the past, so please let me know if you have any hobby happenings (dj classes, mahjong workshops, pickleball clinics etc) coming up that I can include in next month's roundup!

I tend to only include experiences that will really help someone dive into a new hobby and gain enough skill/community to feel equipped to keep going, but you know of shorter experiences (less than 2 hours), I can still include those in the weekly emails.

Thanks in advance 😄

Can we as people stop claiming black on black crime? it is just crime.

It’s only brought to demonize black people. In addition other races have a wicked history then black people ever had. Also, white have they own gangs and so do Asians but never promoted as serious as black people even though is probably worse.

Bars Recommendations, Coming from New Orleans

Hey y’all so my birthday is coming up on a saturday and I wanna plan a night for all of my friends to meet up at a bar. I hate manhattan its always way too loud and packed. Heard brooklyn is better and more chill.

I need 2 recommendations:

  1. I want to start with a big outdoor open bar thats a little more calm and laidback.

  2. Then go hop around a bunch of bars around brooklyn.

I’m from nola so it would be awesome if you guys have NYC bar recs that compare to bars in NOLA, especially the divey ones.

thx!

Please help me find a food option for my girlfriend

I’m in Williamsburg for a little bit tonight to visit a friend while passing through, and he offered to buy us dinner, but I’m struggling to find a spot with vegan dishes open late (11-12)

I pretty much expect for there to be nothing and to have to get it now (before 9) but I figured I’d cover all my bases. Thanks!!

Edit: I’m a dumbass this is the wrong Williamsburg😭😭but thank yall for the suggestions

Orient Grove concerns

I’ve lived in Williamsburg for the past 24 years and near Orient Grove for the past 6. From everything I understand, this is a public park, and it’s been maintained by the same person/family for roughly the last 20 years. I genuinely appreciate the time, money, and effort that’s clearly gone into caring for it over the years. When it's well maintained, it's beautiful.

What I don’t understand is how a public park can effectively function as a private space. The gates are almost always locked, and access increasingly seems limited to family, friends, or invited guests. Lately the only person I see there is a younger man who seems to be connected from the family coming and going from the shed.

What’s even more frustrating is that the space now appears to be deteriorating. There are trash bags sitting in the middle of the park, rusting equipment left out, overgrowth, and the space is no longer being maintained at the level it once was...or at all.

I’m not looking to “take over” the park or diminish the work that’s been done there. But if this is truly public land, it feels reasonable for the community to ask basic questions about access and accountability.

At minimum, it seems like there needs to be a real conversation about what this space is supposed to be: a private family compound or a public neighborhood park.

Buyout $$ amount??

Re-entering into buyout convo with my building owner. Only rent stabilized unit out of 5 rented apartments

100 year old building but the rest of building outside my unit renovated. Prime Greenpoint / Williamsburg area near Mcgolrick.

What have People recently been asking and getting? Seems we have a lot of leverage and the last time we chatted about it and declined was during Covid so I realize averages $$ may have altered. Also Im mid 30s single no kids. Unit is overall stellar condition. We’ve maintained it well and kitchen appliances were all updated in 2008 still amazing/ before that industry went to h3ll.

Looking for PCP recommendations

I've been going to Mount Sinai on North 7th for years, but it seems like they have a high turnaround for doctors and I just heard my PCP is leaving. Second time in a couple of years this is happening. Anyone love their PCP/GP and care to recommend?

Come get your bike - locked to mine at McCarren by asphalt lock

Hi - you locked your bike with pink handlebars to mine at McCarren sometime between now and 2 pm. If this is your bike or your friend’s come get it ASAP before I call someone to cut the lock - you’ve fully trapped me.

CONCLUSION - thanks everyone! while I don’t think it’s super likely that the person intended to steal my incredibly loved (and functional!) but not particularly valuable bike, you really never know! While I think the person was probably just not paying attention, definitely wasn’t willing to risk it!

The commenter who pointed out that it was just the brake cable caught had it right, but with my particular brakes you actually need tools to get the cable out. Lucky for me, a really nice person grabbing a drink at the Turkey’s Nest had his toolkit with him, and he freed my bike and put the brake back together well enough for me to wheel it over to B’s Bikes on Driggs for a brake adjustment (major shout out to nice people!)

I’ll leave this up mainly in hope that Pink Handlebars sees this and feels bad (AS THEY SHOULD) - if so, pls dm me and I’ll give you my Venmo for the $10 I spent fixing my brakes.

Till next time everyone! Thx for the amusement in a truly annoying moment

casual writing group - brooklyn

Hellooo! 25f living in East Williamsburg looking for pals who want to hang out every week / every other week and write together. Have tried being part of a few different groups throughout the city but haven’t yet jived with the cadence of meetings or overall feel. People of any age lifestyle interests etc. are welcome. My only wish is for this to be something that people are dedicated to! Ideal set-up would be alternating between prompted / solo writing sessions + feedback. Say hi if you’re interested! Ideally wanting something on the smaller and more intimate side of things
