An interest of mine is Japanese ceramics. I thought I’d use AI for something that I wondered. First-hand info is scarce.
How many cords of firewood does it take to fire a large Japanese climbing pottery kiln for 48 hrs to 1000°C. The answer is about 10 cords. They have to be continuously tended In shifts. Slowly ramped up and continuously fed for maybe 36 hrs. then cooled down over days. [all this is approximate]
the ancient kilns were much larger. it’s all but impossible to fire a kiln that size today. Not enough pottery ever needed to fire, and the firewood use is enormous. “A mountains worth”

I know glue is not often discussed here. But Is there pH neutal wood glues?

I made a little wooden knife sheath for a Kiridashi. I used two thin pieces of cedar and glued them together.

I used Titebond II

Now the knife starts rusting when in the sheath!

Are there pH neutral wood glues? I was reading Titebond II has an acidic pH of 3 (Titebond III is 2.5)

I made a little wooden knife sheath by cutting a recess in one of two thin pieces of cedar and glueing them together. (It’s a Japanese thing, similar to a Japanese sword saya wooden sheath)

For new folks.. yes it’s very possible

Cheap modern Lodge cast iron

Oven seasoned w grapeseed oil

Generally washed in dawn after using

Usually oven dried.

Maybe or maybe not wiped afterwards with oil

Electric stovetop

Just a hot pan

Lotsa butter

This oven baked a Dutch baby last night and not washed afterwards. Lotsa butter left in pan.

Only sticking was from stir-frying rice afterwards, but the little residue came off immediately with boiling water cooked in the pan.

Don’t be afraid of cast iron!

Let’s say I wanted a Jnat finishing stone for a nice kasumi on Japanese chisels. Who/where should I trust? I know probably not eBay!

update: I just learned about kasumi powder, and small koppa stones, both of which seem like more affordable solutions to my goal.
