Captain Hook and Barefoot Running

Captain Hook and Barefoot Running

I watched the movie Hook the other day with my kids, and I all I could think about was how it was the perfect metaphor for barefoot running.

The whole premise of the movie is Peter Pan ( Robin Williams) grew up, and when he grew up he forgot how to fight, fly, and crow. He needed to relearn these to be able to fight Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) and save his kids, Wendy and Jack.

We all run barefoot when we are kids and forget as we grow old. We've got to relearn things we already intuitively knew how to do when we were younger. Have to fly, fight, crow, run barefoot. Must save Maggie, must save Jack.

My challenge to you:

See if you can run barefoot now without hearing Dustin Hoffman in your head say, " Good form old boy! Good Show!

You're welcome.

Rode past the Ariel Castro & Anthony Sowell house sites in Cleveland — 15 years later

I recently took a bike ride through Cleveland to visit the sites of two of the city’s most infamous criminal cases. Both the Ariel Castro and Anthony Sowell houses have been demolished, but the memorial at the Sowell site remains.

Riding past, it’s strange to see how time and the city have changed the neighborhoods. Some parts still feel heavy, others have started to heal. It’s a stark reminder of the lasting impact these crimes had on the community.

I documented the ride and reflection, curious if anyone else has been to these sites or seen how the city has changed since then.

Explored the “most haunted tunnel in America” — Moonville Tunnel, Ohio

I recently explored Moonville Tunnel in Ohio, often called one of the most haunted tunnels in the U.S.

It sits deep in the woods where a mining town once existed, now completely gone. No lights, no nearby roads, just the tunnel and the forest.

There are three main ghost stories tied to it:

  • The Lavender Lady, seen wandering near the tunnel at night leaving a scent of lavender
  • The Bully, a railroad worker who reportedly died violently there
  • The Engineer, whose ghost is said to appear with a phantom train

Biking through it alone, you can understand why the legends stuck. It’s completely silent, isolated, and honestly pretty unsettling once you’re inside.

Has anyone else been there or experienced anything strange?

Attempted to bike across the world’s only legal international ice bridge and ended up walking to Canada

With the best Great Lakes ice conditions in 30 years, I set out to ride my Trek 930 with studded Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro tires from Drummond Island, Michigan to St. Joseph Island, Ontario across Lake Huron.

The ice had other plans. Deep, wind-blown snow drifts made riding impossible, so I left my bike by a small Christmas tree marking the trail across the ice and continued on foot.

When I reached Canada, border patrol told me the crossing is only allowed by snowmobile. Already on the island, I was told to return to the U.S., so I walked back picking up my bike at the Christmas tree on the way back home.

Sidaway Bridge — Cleveland Only Suspension bridge with a checkered past

The Sidaway Bridge was the only Suspension Bridge Ever built in Cleveland. It was built in the 1920s and shortly after became notorious as the site of the grisly torso murders. This was a series of murders that were never solved, and Elliot Ness was even brought in to solve the case, with no luck.

The bridge was in use as a pedestrian bridge until the 1960s. In the 1960s Cleveland like much of the nation, was consumed by racial tensions. During a race riot the bridge decking was removed in an attempt to contain the riot, as rioters tried to burn the the bridge down.

After the riots, the bridge was left in disrepair and never returned to service. The rusting hulk today is all that remains.

Has anyone else explored Sidaway Bridge or other forgotten Cleveland infrastructure?

Hillandale Bridge to Nowhere — Euclid, OH MTB Exploration

Rode deep into Euclid, Ohio, exploring the Hillandale Bridge to Nowhere, an abandoned bridge tucked away in the woods near Hillandale Park.

Overgrown trails, eerie abandoned infrastructure, and glimpses of forgotten local history made this ride a surreal experience. Perfect for MTB riders and urban explorers looking for off-the-map destinations.

Have you explored Hillandale Park or other hidden Ohio spots? Would love to hear your stories.

Exploring Point Pleasant, WV — Mothman sightings, UFOs, and the Silver Bridge tragedy

Rode my mountain bike through Point Pleasant, West Virginia, the town famous for Mothman sightings in the 1960s.

Along the ride, I visited the Mothman statue, heard an eyewitness account of the Silver Bridge collapse, and uncovered tales of strange underground howls that still haunt the area.

The combination of folklore, urban exploration, and bike adventure made this ride unforgettable. I had heard stories of the bridge collapse and mothman, but never that it was common knowledge that all the locals would watch UFOs in the evening. Also, when I was talking to the lady in town, it was the first time I had ever heard mentioned of thousands of people howling under the ground.

Has anyone else explored Point Pleasant or seen anything unusual in the area?

Forgotten industrial ruins: Leetonia Beehive Coke Ovens, Ohio

Deep in Columbiana County lies one of the largest remaining collections of beehive coke ovens in America, remnants of the once-booming coal town of Leetonia.

I rode my bike through overgrown trails surrounding these massive industrial ruins, discovering history, decay, and a hauntingly beautiful landscape lost to time.

Has anyone else explored abandoned industrial sites like this in Ohio or elsewhere?
