Hiya! My name is Bryn, I use they/them pronouns, and this is the main plot of the story I'm currently writing called 'Runaways' :)

This is a dystopian novel where the protagonist, 18-year-old Brontë Beaumont, grew up in a facility/training school that takes abandoned children when they’re very young (around 1 - 4) and starts them off early in life with knowledge on how to attack and kill.

With her best friend, 18-year-old Gianna Tilden. Brontë just wants to become a writer or poet who is known for making beautiful literature rather than killing for a living. With her male friend, Barrett Álvarez and Gianna, she escapes her past life and goes to the forbidden lands which are called Deadreach, which are islands in the center of the four continents, north, east, south, and west. Together, they attempt to find real Regime Echelons and people who can help by contacting people with a dingy old radio over the course of months and plan to find peace and balance and to stop the rot.

But, being an Regime Echelon, doesn’t really help her case. Regime Echelons are bloodlines that were mutated by increased global warming to have supernatural abilities, and she just so happened to be born as one. Not only that, but Regime Echelon are a really targeted bloodline that are widely known for being ‘dangerous’ and are killed for merely existing, however no one even knows what an Regime Echelon does, they are just powerful in an unknown way.

The facility allegedly does training on real Regime Echelon’s, but about 98% of students aren’t Regime Echelon, but the facility hides this because they want to be viewed as powerful because they supposedly have a lot. Brontë eventually discovers Barrett caught one of the Deadreach guards without telling her or Gianna, and they discover from this that Barrett was disguising himself as a student and was actually very involved with the facility and is much older than Gianna and Brontë and he wanted to exploit Brontë for her power (and likely groom her), but was pissed when Gianna came along and had been slowly poisoning both Brontë and Gianna – Brontë with a specific poison that made her dizzy and more reliant on Barrett and Gianna with a poison that slowly killed her by eating away at her body.

However, Gianna realizes what’s happening after her once quite muscular figure becomes very bony and skinny, and she traces the source back to the food Barrett had been feeding them as he claimed he would find safe edible plants to eat – but after studying the plants he put in the food, she came to the conclusion he was poisoning them, and quickly told Brontë, and they managed to contain him using – (well, I haven't exactly figured it out yet, but I will soon!).

One night, Brontë finds the Deadreach guard Barrett took hostage and is horrified by how many injuries are on the man’s body and how badly Barrett must have tortured him. Brontë attempts to comfort and heal the man, but doesn’t realize the man is Phoenix Montague, who is the only Regime Echelon to have ever unlocked his power (Sensory hijacking which controls what others see, hear, or feel, making illusions indistinguishable from reality), which was very dangerous which is where the stereotype of Regime Echelon’s being extremely dangerous came from, and for this, Phoenix became very popular among armies fighting against the rot global warming is causing that causes continents to slowly fall apart (the only remaining continents are Europe, Africa, North America and Oceania.)

The continents then drifted into different sections of North, East, South and West. Europe became South, Africa became North, North America became West and Oceania became East. However, after an accidental massacre, Phoenix was considered far too dangerous to be around normal men, and was assigned a very lonely job as a guard at the Deadreach, without realizing he was actually being tested since he was the only guard at the Deadreach because it’s overcome by the rot, which means Phoenix is immune to the rot, which means all Regime Echelon are immune. Which means Barrett is also unfortunately a Regime Echelon, but Gianna isn’t, and the supposed poison she was being fed was actually her slowly dying from the rot.

Barrett was only poisoning Brontë, not her, because he knew if she stayed oblivious to the real source poisoning her. That was Barrett’s plan all along. Also, Regime Echelon’s have little physical details on them that aren’t normal that is the only way to distinguish them from normal humans.

All the fake Regime Echelon’s in the facility had fake details added to them as babies that they didn’t know, and the very few that were real Regime Echelon were seemingly indistinguishable from the fake ones, and even the fake ones didn’t know if they were real or not. A lot of the time, the details on real ones aren’t that noticeable unless you look hard enough. Phoenix’s is that he has white hair (which is very noticeable and is why he was easily notified to be an Regime Echelon). Regime Echelon’s also can not harm other Regime Echelon’s, which is why Phoenix could not fight back against Barrett’s torture.

Barrett’s detail is that he has an extra row of teeth behind his normal ones (they’re much sharper), Brontë’s is that the veins on her arms glow. Gianna’s fake one was that she had a special type of vitiligo on her back that formed a symbol of an Regime Echelon, but as the rot’s poison slowly took over her body, the ‘symbol’ was ink that was inserted in her skin as a baby that now the poison has been affecting her skin as well, it has disappeared which is how they know she isn’t a real Regime Echelon.

With the help of Phoenix after Brontë releases him on the promise he’ll help heal Gianna and join their act of finding people to help stop the rot in a peaceful way rather than what the army is doing (which is straight up just destroying more land than helping). Phoenix agrees, and they leave Barrett at the Deadreach to hopefully die a slow and painful death – and with enough convincing from Phoenix – escape to South (Europe) where they go in hiding.

But, Phoenix isn’t as innocent as he seems, and he betrays Gianna and Brontë once they finally get to safety (Gianna was originally much stronger than Brontë, but now that they have been on the island for at least 4 months, she’s pretty much skin and bones and can barely even stand up straight without Brontë’s help), and since Gianna is so weak, he uses her as a hostage and threatens to kill her by hijacking her senses and overwhelming her weak body so much and causing so much hysteria she dies on the spot very painfully.

Terrified of losing her last real friend, Brontë agrees. Phoenix wasn’t just some random kid who turned out to be a Regime Echelon, he was bred to be that way by forcing male and female Regime Echelon’s to have sex in hopes they would create a child with the power of two, and that's why Phoenix’s power is so dangerous, because both his parents were Regime Echelon rather than just one which is how it always is because finding another Regime Echelon is very rare.

Phoenix easily surpassed full grown soldiers even in adolescence, and because of this, he became the favorite of Denzel Gray, who just so happens to be the top ranking general in South and also one of the founders of the facility (the facility was in West, which is North America so he would often make trips to West, leaving young Phoenix behind for months at a time without warning), that Gianna and Brontë were raised in (he originally had a daughter named Raelynn who he really hoped would take his role as general and prayed she would be an Regime Echelon and even though she clearly wasn’t and had very weak bones and was actually and mute with bad hearing, he still pushed her to be the best and during a duel, she was killed and Denzel was heart-broken and basically used Phoenix as a replacement for her).

Phoenix convinced them to escape to South because he wanted a quicker way to get them to Denzel, since now, Denzel sees hope in Brontë and wants to treat her like the daughter he lost since she is a real Regime Echelon (Denzel’s love for Phoenix was more the love of his power, but never really fulfilled what Raelynn had since Denzel really wanted a daughter).

The story (presumably the first book since I kind of hope I’ll be able to write a second which I’ve already begun planning for) ends with Brontë sitting next to Gianna’s hospital bed and watches her barely surviving body breathe while Phoenix watches from a distance with unknown jealousy, thinking over Brontë’s future and how he can make sure she never discovers her power and hopefully dies before she ever can.

Brontë also has a brother named Cian Beaumont who is 26 and was older than Brontë when they were first taken in and since he was too old to be faked as an Regime Echelon, the facility made him a teacher, but he and Brontë were still very close but grew apart over time as Brontë started getting expected to kill people and she didn’t want to (Brontë was originally the one who needed to fight Raelynn, but she refuses, and Brontë regrets refusing so much because if she hadn’t, Raelynn might have still been alive.)

I would love some critiques and suggestions but would also love some name ideas because I'm totally stuck lol -_-
