Are these comments normal for "just friends"?

I have a guy friend who I’ve known for a while. We hang out one on one sometimes and talk every single day. Trying to figure out if his behavior is normal friendship behavior or something more.
The main thing confusing me is that recently I made a completely innocent casual comment and out of nowhere he responded privately saying he wanted to perform a very explicit sexual act on me. No buildup, no context, just completely unprompted in response to something totally innocent I said.
This isn’t the first time either. He regularly makes sexual comments about my body and size, sends me sexual content privately, and makes suggestive jokes in our friend group that are directed at me but always have plausible deniability.
He’s also very protective of me, pays for everything when we hang out one on one, and everyone in our circle kind of assumes I belong to him.
He’s never actually made a direct move though. When someone publicly asked if something was going on between us he denied it.
Is responding to an innocent comment with something explicitly sexual something friends do casually? Am I reading too much into this?
