[Nintendo Game Boy] D-Pad down pauses, Right jumps, left Is B

Got this Game Boy today and Immediately noticed problems with the d pad.

I tried cleaning it.

my guess Is a bad connection on the contacts

I tried opening it but screws were not cooperating.

I'd like to get some expert opinions what the issue could be before I go any further with repairs
