What does it take to be the top?

I had it confirmed to me recently by someone at Google that levels have no effect on weight for gbp reviews, (something I disagree with tbh. I digress )

My question is, I get several of these you're in the top 10% for, shopping venues, restaurants, etc.

What does it take to get top 5 for example. I did some fag packet maths and maps gets billions of review interaction per month, so being in the top 10% is nothing special, you're in a club of millions!

Thoughts? Anyone else get these?

Cheers

So I went onto NotebookLM. Took a lot of documentation from Googles Dev docs (I'm a G dev) and from Ask Maps documentation. From there I got it to create me some explainer videos, a deepdive podcast, slides. Took those, exported them all into Google Vids, and within a few clicks I got it exported to YouTube.

I personally think this kind of workflow is going to be huge moving forward. I hope you enjoy the video. Don't think too much about the edit but it has got some really useful info in there.

Cheers.. B

Quick work-in-progress demo of a dashboard I’m building with Tambo and Generative UI.

The problem I’m trying to solve is pretty simple:

Most dashboards are confusing when you first open them.

You log in, see a load of charts, menus and buttons, and think:

“Right… what am I supposed to do now?”

I’m including myself in that, by the way.

The interesting bit with Generative UI is that it starts from something people already understand now: chat.

Ask a question.

Get the right view.

See the next action.

Still early. Still connecting the dots.

But this feels like a much better direction than expecting people to learn another complicated dashboard from scratch.

I’ve been noticing these curated lists inside Google Maps in Thailand over the past few weeks. Things like “Local Gems” and similar themed collections.

To be clear, these are not lists created by individual users. They appear to be generated or published by Google Maps itself.

When they appear, I save them and keep an eye on the places included. A few things stand out:

The lists seem to update regularly

I can’t find a clear source explaining how they are generated

Some of the venue choices feel a bit unusual

In one list, every place seemed to have at least one review mentioning “atmosphere”

I haven’t seen many new ones appear recently, but some existing lists still seem to change

My current hunch is that they may be generated algorithmically from review keywords, place attributes, saves, engagement signals, or other Maps activity.

Has anyone else noticed these Google Maps-generated lists?

I’m mainly curious whether this is happening in other countries too, and whether anyone has worked out what signals might be causing certain places to appear.

Cheers

The lists seem to update regularly, but I can’t find a clear source explaining how they’re generated

The venue selection feels a little baffling in places

There are some repeated patterns. For example, in one list every place had a review mentioning the word “atmosphere”

I haven’t seen any new ones surface recently, but some existing ones still seem to change

My current hunch is that these are being generated algorithmically, probably from a mix of review keywords, entity attributes, user engagement signals, and maybe local behavioural data.

I’m curious whether anyone else has looked into these.

A few questions:

Has anyone seen similar Google Maps-generated lists in other countries?

Do they seem to be review/theme driven?

Has anyone found documentation or a clear pattern behind what gets included?

Could this be part of Google testing more AI-led discovery surfaces in Maps?

Would be useful to compare notes with anyone else tracking this.

Hello also!
