Google clobbering maps by removing existing walkways from map view/routing

Was there an announcement from Google that they'd be culling perfectly fine walkways from Maps?

I find this highly annoying; asked on the Google Maps Community pages about a "why" where my post was deleted as inappropriate.

On the other hand it Maps would happily send people on bikes on walkways, some including steep steps. Is there a way to contact their curation team?

Opening apple maps in google maps

I am really frustrated, i am probably missing something...
I use android but often get pins/links from Iphone users from apple maps. ( i work in wildlife rescue and trapping and get location information for compromised animals)
They always open in a browser...maps.apple.com/place?.... But this issue is i cant get it to "start" the navigation process. there is no "start" button it just shows the pin, the address in a box and an "x" to close it.
how do i get these to open or transfer to google maps?

what am i missing?

Google Maps says “Looks like you’re offline” but internet is working fine.

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a strange issue with Google Maps. It keeps showing “Looks like you’re offline” on the contribute section, but my WiFi and mobile data are both working perfectly fine.

I can browse other apps and websites without any problem, so internet doesn’t seem to be the issue.

Has anyone faced this before? Any fix or idea what could be causing it?

Thanks in advance.

Only seeing Blue Lines when route planning instead of typical traffic colors

I'm curious about typical traffic patterns for an upcoming drive. I entered the start and end destinations with the Traffic Layer toggled on. When it's set to Leave Now, I see the current traffic pattern colors on the route options. After I changed the depart time to a future day/time, I see the times adjust based on the depart time, but I don't see any typical traffic colors along the route options anymore.

I've noticed this for a little while and I'm curious whether this is a bug they're working on or if Google has removed this visual feature. Or perhaps I have some setting turned off I don't know about.

Can entire towns be removed from Google Streetview?

The small mountain village of Colver in Pennsylvania has been removed. It was definitely there before, as I remember exploring it a few years ago in Maps/Earth

Google Maps offline car mode : Can't reach the internet

Google Maps offline map can be downloaded.

However, using Google Maps offline in Drive or car mode get the "Can't reach the internet" message and "current location not available".

Both OsmAnd and Maps.me apps work in offline mode as expected.

I had tried using first with internet access for a few minutes, then disabled internet access.

I had tried different Google Maps versions, all had the same "Can't reach the internet" issues.

Google Maps version is 26.12.05.884026066 now.

Android version is 16.

How to turn off first person interface?

Making the map tilted, turning the map constanly how tf do I turn this off? bad under the best of circumstances insanely bad when direction is inaccurate.

I don't suppose there's nothing I can do about the fact that street names are a scarce resource in google maps.

A simple drop-in replacement for the deprecated google.maps.drawing library

Recently, I realized that Google is officially pulling the google.maps.drawing library from the Google Maps JavaScript API. While their recommended replacement is TerraDraw, I really liked the simplicity of the old drawing library - so I decided to build my own replacement.

I put together a polyfill that works almost exactly like the original. If you have a Google Maps project that is going to break next month because of this deprecation, you can drop this library in for a quick fix instead of spending hours on a major code rewrite.

Google is deleting your “owned” Location History even after moving it to your phone

TL;DR: I caught it because my newer Timeline export was smaller than my older one. When I compared the raw files, Google had removed the detailed GPS history and left only summaries. They didn’t give you your data—they offloaded it, cut it down, and kept control of what remains.

Google’s been tracking my location since like 2013. But last year, when they forced that migration and moved everything onto my phone they it became mine in my head. It’s literally on my device now.

I noticed the older Timeline export was bigger than one that was a couple months newer… even though they were only a few months apart, the newer one covered more time, and both exports were made from the data stored on my phone after the migration. That made zero sense to me unless something was missing.

And that’s exactly how I caught it. I wasn’t even looking for anything shady—I just noticed the file sizes didn’t add up. The newer file should’ve been bigger, instead it was smaller. So I pulled both JSON files and had ai compare them directly.

This isn’t compression. It’s not formatting. They are straight up removing data. Literally erasing or pasts. They didn’t “give us our data” like they claimed. They offloaded it.

That’s what this really was. They were sitting on years of location history for millions of people, and instead of continuing to store it, they pushed it onto our phones. They framed it like a privacy upgrade, but really they just freed up a massive amount of space on their own servers and handed the storage to us.

What really pisses me off is that they hacked it up first. Neither export has the amount of data as you would have gotten from Takeout, but the first export still had real GPS paths—actual coordinates, step-by-step movement, like a true record of where you were. The new one? That detail is gutted. The timelinePath sections that used to be full are empty or stripped down. What’s left is basically a summary. “You went here.” “You were at this place.” So they kept the label… and deleted the proof.

When Timeline first came out, the whole point was that it was your record. Your travels. You could go back and actually see where you walked, how you got somewhere, what your day looked like. That’s what people were sold on.

Now they’ve turned it into something else. They don’t care about you remembering anything. They care about what they can use—patterns, locations, habits. The parts that they feed into whatever systems they run to make money offa us. So they kept what helps them, and quietly deleted what mattered to you. They did it without saying a word. No warning. No choice. Just ran it in the background like it’s still their data to manage.

Even though it’s sitting on your phone.

This whole “it’s on your device now” thing is bullshit. It makes it sound like you’re in control, but you’re not. They still decide what stays, what goes, and when it changes. So what are you actually holding? Not your full history. Just the version that helps them monetize you. You’re not even the owner—you’re just storage. You’re hosting their processed "optimized" (yeah right...) data. They save space, reduce liability, still use what they need… and you’re the one supplying the hardware.

For free, when I pay Google for storage space.

So yeah… they didn’t give you anything. They moved their problem onto you, stripped your data down to what benefits them, and never told you they were doing it.

My Maps vs Google Maps - Adding Icons

I purchased a My Maps map from a travel expert, which has great suggestions and an effective icon system. It's my understanding that I can't use this map with cell service when I am in Italy. For this reason, I created my own Google map of favorite places in (example) Florence, adding some of hers on. I can't seem to figure out how to mark (example) shopping one icon and restaurants another. Is there a way to do this? I did it ONCE, and now I can't figure out how I did it! Tried googling it with no success.

Google maps direction and location malfunction while on trip.

Idk why this happens but at times google maps direction and gps location malfunctions during my trip. Today I rode the bus in the wrong direction because of this.
This is not due to gps problems because the problem tends to go away when I cancel the trip, so something in google maps trip planing software is causing the issue.

Why you do this maps? Clear straight path and you are unnecessarily giving longer route

So seen this multiple times in google? Anybody know why it does this . Clear straight path is visible but maps want to make it difficult. Idk why

All edits are rejected

So, recently whenever I edit any business on google maps all my edits without exception get rejected immediately without consideration, although I have been editing for years now from the same account and i reached level 10.

Most of my edits used to get through right away or at least stay pending for a couple of days max. But now all is rejected. Was I banned or something? Is it the new AI I heard about?
