What do you think of my default style? Any advice on how to make it more appealing?

Hi! Exactly as i said in the title. This is my default style, the proportions i fall into when im not thinking about character design or different styles i want to emulate. What do you guys think of it? Is it generally appealing? How would you guys describe it? Im really not sure what my default looks like to other people at all and i really want some advice on if its decent or if i should adjust how i default in proportions more. These are really quick doodles i did just for this post. Thanks!

What am i supposed to do with my hair? Is it wavy or just horribly messy?

Hi! As said in the title. My hair gets wavy when its wet from the shower, and it holds a LOT of water to the point that i have to spend over a minute ringing it out before i can towel dry. It is constantly tangling in small sections no matter how much i brush, and i suspect my hair isnt entirely straight. This is the longest ive had my hair since i was eight years old, and i really dont know what to do with it. Im not raised in the type of family or community that puts a lot of effort into hair care or styling. But i feel like my hair is really doing NOTHING for me in terms of looks. When i have my hair short, it gets very fluffy. I do not use products in it beyond shampoo and conditioner (unscented bc of skin situations), and i towel dry.

Jude Elias Carter wants one thing: to erase the crushing debt that is slowly destroying his life.

But in (blank) City in 24XX, where every movement is tracked and every identity is owned by the system, escape is nearly impossible. Jude has already tried everything to stay afloat—smuggling, theft, and jobs on the illegal networks that scrape the bottom of society—but none of it has been enough. When a debt collectors attempts to recover assets escalates and threatens the life of his ailing little sister, Jude is forced into a final option he never wanted: the one job in the underground that is either a myth or a death sentence.

Corin is a name whispered through the lowest layers of (blank) City’s underground economy. They’re sometimes spoken of as a savior, sometimes as a monster, and sometimes as proof the system itself has cracks. No one agrees if Corin is real, but everyone agrees on one thing: a bounty exists for their death, and it is large enough to erase any debt and buy a clean escape from the system entirely.

It should be the perfect job to save Jude and his sister. The only problem is that Corin cannot be killed.

As Jude struggles through a series of failed assassination attempts that go unpunished and increasingly defy logic, he becomes more entangled in Corin’s existence, and the reality of their suffering immortality. When Jude finally draws the attention of the entity responsible for enforcing Corin’s eternal life, he is forced into an impossible choice: secure the safest possible future for himself and his sister by walking away, or risk everything to stand against a dark, possessive force that refuses to let Corin die.

(Untitled) is a 100,000-word romantic sci-fi fantasy about immortality, grief, and survival under total surveillance. It will appeal to fans of the intense queer relationships in Dark Rise, the class division and systemic tension of Arcane, and the dark, transactional magical systems of Ninth House.

This is still in the first draft so some aspects are left unnamed for now! I tend to do my query writing early on in revisions bc it helps me narrow down what the true point of the story is. Please let me know what is or isnt unclear here! Thanks

Would love some kind critique on my art skills and where im currently at. I recently got into art university with a scholarship, but i still feel like my art is really lacking something when it comes to appeal and design sense, if you get what i mean? Im never satisfied with my style and always feel like something is missing that makes people truly ‘like’ it. Im worried that ive developed some horrible bad habit that im just missing that looks off to other people. Ive shown some finished works (some more polished than others), and some slides with sketches near the end. Thanks!

THE IMAGES IN THIS POST ARE NOT MY OWN AND IM NOT CLAIMING TO HAVE MADE THEM! They are simply examples of the type of artwork I’m asking about. I am not using or claiming these as mine.

My question is as in the title. How do people even begin to plan these types of compositions, where there are many different elements overlapping and interacting with each other, often with a lot of other design elements like text or titles or frame borders?

Im not an inexperienced artist, so the matter of this isn’t ‘learning how to draw these things’. It’s the compositions themselves, and the creativity design behind them.

I can sketch these elements, and i can think of how i want to represent story in my own art. But at a certain point i just don’t know what to add into the piece to make it more ornate and decorative like this. Like okay there’s one character here in one pose, and the character there in another pose, and they look good next to each other and i can convey emotion with colour. But how do i decide design elements that work well with the characters and the story and everything else already going on? How do people use all this amazing texture and barely there patterns to add so much life to things? How would you even go about planning an illustration like this?

Everything i try always ends up far too simple for what I’m going for, or ends up feeling completely messy and like it’s unreadable because nothing works together as well as these types of pieces do.

Sorry there’s not more examples of what i mean. I don’t want to just share a bunch of other peoples art so I’m trying to limit it the best i can.

The main reason I’m asking is because I’m getting into book cover design, and my personal favourite kinds of book covers are the ones in design styles similar to this, but i simply cant figure out how to emulate this in a way that looks good and as intentional as I’m trying to be.

Sorry if this makes little sense. Thank you!

Im very happy with my phainon, he’s the best ive ever built a character, but i know theres a lot of progress for me to make on him. Once im done with my eva team, where should i focus on improving him? I know team wise its cerydra, but i lost 5050 on her last banner and wasnt able to guarantee her in time, so ill have to grab her next time around. Other than pulling more units for him, where should i focus my improvement? Should i just be trying to focus more crit damage and try to get his crit rate down a bit more? (He was previously over capped on crit rate a lot more with rmc. Im switching emc to eva team so sparkle is taking that spot, which is making his overcapp a lot less bad, and giving him more crit damage of course).

Any advice would be appreciated! I dont really build super well towards the meta but i wanna do my best for my beloved phai. Ty!

Im not looking for general advice on stakes or how to structure a heist- I’m looking for detailed thought on what you personally think makes one feel good to you!

When you read or watch a heist, or even just think about them, whats the one thing you think would really make the story hit for you? Is it something with the characters, the planning phase, or the focus (mark) of the heist itself? In a fantasy setting, do you enjoy it when magic plays a role in a heist? Or do you prefer a more classic skill set?

Is there anything commonly written in a heist story that, when you see it, makes you want to put it down and stop right away?

Specific thoughts! Im not going to directly take anyones ideas, i already have my project fleshed out. I just want to see if theres anything i might be missing or should avoid that I’m not thinking about!

NA server, 1.2 account (peep the festering desire. Reached dragon spine with less than an hour left in that event). The only limited event character with cons is kazuha, who’s C2.

I’m not sure if the rules specifying ‘mentioning’ things also means i have to write everything in the caption, not just show screenshots. But i think it would take me a bit to list everything out, so im going to assume this is fine for now! Just wanna see roughly how much i could get for this since i cant play genshin anymore.

Made a post just a bit ago about wanting to learn more about cover design related to character art and was suggested to do a bunch of practice covers to build a possible portfolio. This is the design without text, because i know my typography will be horrifically lacking until i learn that aspect better, but this was designed with text placement in mind. Looking for feedback specifically on design elements and how well this would work as a front cover in general! Of course, this is practice by using alice in wonderland. All constructive feedback welcome! Thank you

Comfortable doing suggestive, nsfw, slightly gory/cute horror types of art as well!

Please dm with character references and up to chat to discuss ideas!

Busts (chest and up) are 35$, full bodies 70$, full bodies with background 90$. All commissions will be in the more rendered style unless otherwise requested!

Hi! New to the sub, so if I’m missing any important context to add, sorry!

Im an artist (digital, specifically focused in character art but decent with other elements). Im going to school for animation based on my portfolio work soon. Ive done other commission work in the past, and am looking into growing specifically into the cover design space.

I am wondering, what do you guys think is the best way to grow such a portfolio and get practice?

While i know I’m a skilled artist, i have a lot of work to do in growing as a general designer, and i would not feel right charging anyone for work when i know my first many designs would be sub par.

Would it be a good idea to start with free art gifted to existing authors, both indie and otherwise? Or even creating alternate covers based on existing books with the type of designs i would want to make? Where would be the best place to start showing this work as examples for possible interested authors to see? I don’t have the spare income to set up a full website at the moment, so I’m wondering if anyone has any thoughts on that!

On top of that, are there any resources cover artists use to decide their prices depending on the work itself, their experience, and the requirements of authors? Is there knowledge of industry standards for this type of work that i should keep in mind?

Thank you!

Of course, the artwork in the image is all created by me, drawn by hand in digital software (clip studio paint) spoiling just bc kind of nervous about my art showing up in full on a bunch of peoples feeds lol

THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE I AM NOT LOOKING FOR MEDICAL ADVICE. I AM DIAGNOSED IN MY PROBLEM AND AM TREATING IT BUT I WANT TO DISCUSS WRITING STUFF TO SEE IF ANY OTHER WRITERS RELATE!

hi ya’ll. I have the unfortunate situation of being both a writer and an artist, and within the last couple years i developed muscle injuries in both arms as well as some other arm problems. Due to my living situation, i cannot do the thing where you speak and the program picks up your words for you. I wear a brace on my dominant arm at all time and most of the time that helps limit the pain, but im just wondering if there are any other writers who are struggling with similar things, and how they feel it affects their life?

Essentially my hand and fingers go numb when over used, all the way up my arm, and i get deep blue bruises on the backs of my hands between the tendons. Unfortunately not much i can do to fix it.

Are there any other writers here who are struggling with similar injuries? Have you found ways to keep writing despite the problem? Hand writing is out of the question (my hands are too weak most days to write even a few words legibly), but i can usually type for a few hours a day. Drawing is actually a lot less straining than writing is, maybe bc my hands have just built up use for that too much.

Does it affect your mental state about your writing, if youre in a similar situation? If you found out you may have to quit writing completely due to something like this, would you try to keep writing? Are there any methods other than audio transcribing that people use to help deal with this? (For context i have four roommates in a very nosy house with no real privacy. And in a few months im moving to where i will be sharing essentially a dorm room, so no real privacy for that there either.)

Thanks!

MODS PLEASE DONT DELETE THIS POST THIS IS WRITING SPECIFIC PLEASE

Im going to be careful in my wording on this post because i know some people on this thread can get prickly.

Im going to preface that i’m not a ‘new’ writer, but also not an expert. My writing is very flawed, and im just asking for a discussion on this. I genuinely (not lying) wrote 600,000 words last year in drafts and personal projects unrelated to my goals for traditional publishing.

I know a huge part of the answer to this will be ‘draft first, edit later’, but I’ve tried solving this problem this way many times. But its a habit so engrained in me that its just annoying me at this point, and i need some thoughts on if there’s a way for me to fix it.

The problem? Filler language.

‘He saw that’, ‘he felt this’ ‘just’ etc etc etc. not just that, but i tend to over explain every single description i write. Im constantly couching my own language to make sure readers understand.

Its not just a writing problem. I DO THIS WHEN I SPEAK. i talk this way, and type this way in messages with friends, and its HORRIBLE in my writing. I genuinely think part of this is an autism thing, but i know it causes major problems in my writing. But finishing a draft and seeing that every single line needs to be changed because of this kind of language makes me INSANE!!! I need to think of methods to help myself work this out of my system. Simply ‘writing more’ doesn’t fix it, and neither does just getting more feedback. I know I’m doing it! I just don’t see how bad it is in the moment, because everything feels ‘necessary’ as i write it.

It’s probably in every sentence in this post and i cant even see it as I’m writing! If i had to edit this post to be able to post it without it being noticed i would rather just throw it in the trash.

Does anyone else have this problem so intensely? And any ideas how to slowly fade this filtering out of my thought process? Genuinely willing to try any insane, stupid idea.

Thanks!

Looking for FEEDBACK. not for someone to bash on my premise, thanks. Posted this last night mostly just got bashing comments, so i took it down thinking maybe there would be some actually helpful people during the daytime.

This is a romance book in a world with a heavy focus on dragons. No the romance is not between four legged snouted dragons! Its between people! No i am not ‘whats wrong with literature’ by posting this, thanks.

This is the FIRST DRAFT of a possible prologue from the perspective of the male love interest. Every term that doesn’t exist in our language is the name of a dragon character, any other fantasy terms are going to be in common phrasing for help with readability because i know thats a problem for a lot of fantasy readers.

I have access to other feedback, I’m just saving my ‘proper’ ‘objective’ beta readers for much further along in my revisions. Im fine with all stylistic feedback and advice. Thank you for any actual feedback on my writing!

(Missed some things in editing to share, updated version in the replied)
