Illustrations and artists similar to this?

Have been trying to find the artist that did this illustration I found on Pinterest! 1. Looking for that + similar artists that have the same vintage style? 2. Also looking for pens that these artists might have used 👐🏼

Tracing Do's and Don'ts - Yes, it's mostly ok.

In my short time in this sub I have seen an insane amount of posts regarding tracing. In an attempt to curb this question, I'm compiling a list of common questions.

  1. Is it ok to trace 3D models?

Yes, this is industry standard in a lot of fields. Animation and comics/manga specifically. Clip Studio Paint specifically has poseable 3D models for this reason. If you can use Blender, making your own models to trace is fine. One caviat though: you still need basic understanding of anatomy, muscle mass, fat distribution, and facial feature variety. It is a blank slate and it's only a way to save time.

  1. Is it ok to trace others' work for practice?

Yes. So long as you are not posting it and taking credit for the source image. Tracing has many benefits for training muscle memory and observational skills. It is especially helpful if you draw basic construction shapes and then draw the rest in yourself. If you do plan to post, you NEED to ask the artist's permission if possible. Respect them if they decline. You do not need to post everything you make.

  1. Is tracing cheating?

No, absolutely not. The only thing you might "cheat" is the time it takes for you to do things without tracing. But let's be honest, drawing can be frustrating sometimes. No one is going to lance you for making the hard part less strenuous.

As long as you aren't tracing others' art for profit, you're probably fine.

Final thought: If you are perpetually telling artists to "stop tracing", you aren't being helpful. Some people have incredible ability to observe and mimic styles without tracing. False accusations can harm people. Same with accusations of AI. Let's be kinder.

What technique is used to achieve this softness?

What technique is used to achieve this softness?

This is an image by Shpo. (FYI: He mostly draws NSFW.)

I very much like how soft it looks, it feels very welcoming, and also looks incredibly uniform; it doesn’t appear segregated into segments.

I’d like to try and learn to do this myself. However, I can’t find any tutorials. As a matter of fact, I can’t find anyone but Shpo who draws like this. But I’d prefer to engage in with some SFW work.

Backlighting fog is breaking my brain—does this make sense?

I’m working on a wedding commission in a surrealist / impressionist style and I’m stuck on the fog at the bottom.

The lighting setup is:

Fireworks are going off behind the couple, rising vertically (Btw fireworks are warm tones (yellow/orange/pink) behind them)

So the fog should be backlit and softly glowing, with some of that warm color diffusing through it

Right now I can’t tell if:

the fog actually reads as fog or just paint texture

the lighting direction makes sense with the backlighting

the warm tones (from the fireworks) feel natural or too harsh

I think I might be overworking the fog but not sure how to simplify it.

I’m aiming for something dreamy, soft, and romantic, not dramatic.

Would really appreciate critique—especially on:

•	how to make fog feel more luminous

•	how to show backlighting in a subtle way

•	anything that looks “off” composition or lighting-wise

Thanks so much ♥️

Image 1 — Any advice would be appreciated. I like making the lighting more dramatic than in the reference, but maybe it doesn’t always feel natural?

Need a little help with this drawing I’m working on!

Need a little help with this drawing I’m working on!

Alrighty, exactly as the title says, I need help. I’ve been working on this for a while and it’s genuinely getting annoying now. First things first, I’m struggling with the anatomy of this figure; something looks really off about it but idk what it is or how to fix it. Second of all, I need help with where to place the facial features on the face itself, as I haven’t drawn in a 3/4 perspective for ages (like, it’s been weeks on end since I last did that, and I think I’m going crazy 😭. So yeah, if anyone could help with either of these problems, it would be greatly appreciated!

This is my 3rd attempt and I still cant get it to breathe or feel alive. I'm using a standard pencil but my first concern is the proportions and stuff

I'm struggling drawing light and shadows. How do i make it look less flat?

(I use a translator, so please excuse me for my mistakes in the text.)

I tried using tutorials, but I still don't understand how to draw light and shadows correctly...

Criticism of other things is also welcome.

Both characters are supposed to be guys, I'm not sure how clear that is...

Self-taught artist. I love painting and drawing faces and am always trying to improve. I'm not very confident in the appeal or sale-ability of my art as I have never tried selling it. Do you think my art is good enough to buy and what price would you be willing to pay for it? Or do I need to improve more before thinking about selling? All advice and critique welcome 😊

Tried to recreate a reference—what can I improve?

Hey, I’m looking for some advice on my art.

I’m still a beginner and trying to improve my anime-style drawings.

I used the second image as a reference and tried to recreate the character, but I feel like something looks off and I’m not sure what exactly.

I think I struggle a bit with proportions, shading, and making the drawing look more “clean” or polished.

I attached my drawing and the reference—any feedback on what I could improve (especially anatomy, lighting, or overall style) would really help!

Is this Improvement?

I decided I should probably try again and improve my art instead of avoiding it. I took all the critique i was given and attempted to salvage the drawing.

Is there anything else I can do to improve the drawing?

I need some help/advice…

I’ve been staring at this for maybe about two hours now and I’m unsure if my colors or anatomy are correct. 😭

I want it to stand out in a way with the use of colors but I feel like there’s something wrong and I can’t figure it out, any ideas or suggestions? Criticism is also welcome
