American here, drove through Scotland a couple years ago with my Brit wife visiting distilleries. We stopped in some nowhere town on the way to Abelour for lunch. The restaurant owner who looks like he hadn’t seen a costumer in weeks invited us to a town gathering that evening called a “kay-lee”. I graciously accept.
When we walked into the British Legion that night you could hear a ping drop. I could tell they didn’t get many visitors. The night ended up being a blast, the whole town was there. There was a little boy who MC’ed the whole thing that played the accordion and told the lewdest jokes. Everyone ended up being super friendly and loved Americans. I sense my English wife didn’t get the same reception..
The whole town got drunk together, it was like a Scottish hoedown. Someone also mentioned that they have these during the Highland Games which we just missed, bummer.. The local teen boys and girls who started the night on opposite sides finished the evening mingling, it was all very sweet. On the way out some cheeky kids gave us the wrong directions and then laughed at us as we drove by them minutes later after figuring it out.
It was a great night, these were good people that needed to protected at all cost. This was my Bourdain moment, I think back fondly to the nice people when I remember Scotland.
Got called a greedy devil for asking for the second egg.
Had this and an ebi(shrimp) burger. Both had less sauce than I’m used to, maybe a Japan thing?
The white clam pizza at Frank Pepe’s in New Haven might be the best pizza I’ve ever had. Washed it all down with a birch beer.
NH has some incredible pizza.. Pepe’s, Modern and Sally’s..
As a long time ice cream enjoyer, I think the Eureka lemon and Marion berry (not pictured here) might be the best ice cream I’ve ever had. It also doesn’t hurt that all their stuff all have 4 ingredients, milked, eggs, fruit etc..
Keens over Lugers any day of the week, it’s not close. The mutton chop is slept on.
Tomato ramen from Ganso Tomato Ramen Sanmi in Ramen Stadium, Fukuoka.
Interesting rich tomato taste, topped with extra cheese. Definitely a new unique one.. interesting Asian take on Italian flavors.
If Jollybee spaghetti went to Japanese culinary school, it would taste like this..
Reverse seared, salt/pepper over charcoal with some mesquite. Drippings from the resting plate.
