Excerpt from the newish book "John and Paul" Ian Leslie:
Lennon and Pang’s Santa Monica beachside home had become something of a frat house for dissolute rock stars and their hangers-on. Ringo Starr and Keith Moon had moved in. They partied by the pool, slept all morning, rose, and passed around the drugs.
When McCartney arrived, John was still in bed. Harry Nilsson offered Paul a snort of something. “What is it?” asked Paul. “Elephant tranquilizer,” said Nilsson. “Is it fun?” asked Paul. Nilsson reflected. “No.” Paul declined
There was a piano in the house, and if there is a piano near Paul, he must play it. He played Beatles songs, with Starr and Moon singing along. Eventually John turned up. Meeting in the courtyard, John and Paul were unsure of how to be with each other, until John, perhaps quoting Arthur Janov, said, “Touching is good!” and they hugged. The two chatted lightly for a while before Paul indicated that he wanted a private word. In another room, he delivered Yoko’s message. It’s a remarkable episode, a real-life “She Loves You.”
This book has lots of vignettes like this.. really well put together.
I know the guy was struggling and they were all unfaithful at various times but this is hard to take (read about in multiple sources starting with "John and Paul") ..
Maybe Im too much of a prude but this to me crosses a line from free love to public humiliation.. still love his music
"[In] 1972, ... Lennon and Ono were guests at a party where the former Beatles singer got drunk while watching the presidential election results between Richard Nixon and George McGovern at anti-war activist Jerry Rubin’s Greenwich Village apartment.
As it became clear that Nixon would win by a landslide, the mood grew grim, writes Mintz. And as his drinking got heavier, Lennon ended up having “loud, raucous sex,” with another woman at the party.
“Throughout it all,” Mintz writes in We All Shine On, “Yoko sat on the sofa, in stunned, mortified silence, as other guests began awkwardly getting up to leave — until they realized that their coats were in the bedroom where John was having sex.”
Looking back, "He was placing [his wife] in the most embarrassing position that you could ever place a woman in — having a romp in the hay in another room with thin walls while your wife was attending a small party and could hear everything," ....“Yoko is a very stoic woman, but it would have severe consequences.”
Hey if if you host a birthday party at Dave & Busters do Dads usually assume that they will be covered too?
Had some Dads who wanted to stay & seemed to expect we'd be covering their play
edit: we did get cards but just for 2 Dads who wanted to play themselves, they didnt demand or get pushy, it was more like "any chance ..." anyhow we figured we probably should cover to be good hosts then later I started to wonder
In their defense maybe they thought it was all included or something and we were trying to get rid of extra cards
Had some Dads who seemed to presume we would be paying for their pac man or whatever other return to childhood they were seeking
Is that an expected part of kid birthday party etiquette
American movies make it seem like a major point of motels is for people to conduct illicit affairs or do other things like drug deals, or take drugs or see prostitutes
Is there some truth to this -- do motels serve as this kind of safe space for illicit or illegal activity?
They look wholesome from the outside ...
