How do some low quality hotels get such high ratings?

I was in Spain for a few days last week and I wasn't staying in salou but I was there for the theme park for some days and I had spare time so I took a walk around some of the streets. I saw a lot of hotels that were 4 star and I walked into the lobbies out of curiosity and they were more like 2/3 star. Obviously | didn't see the rooms but from everything I could see they were not 4 star quality.

Same thing when I was in Portugal last year, even some 5 star hotels would be like 3 star in any other place. Do these hotels pay extra for the rating or something, I don't understand how these places can be listed as 4 star hotels. I have stayed in actual 5 and 4 star hotels and the difference in a hotel in London compared to a '5 star hotel' that I saw in Portugal is significant.

Why don’t homeless people want to go to prison?

I always think that if I were homeless and at rock bottom I would just do something that would send me to prison and there I can get food, shelter, and clothing. Of course maybe if you are only slightly homeless this isn’t a good idea, but if you have nothing to lose then why isn’t this a popular option

AITA for not accepting the alternative vacation my friend offered after he bailed on the one we had planned?

My friend [18M] and I [20M] booked a vacation a few months ago to go to Europe and sometime after paying the deposit he told me he couldn’t afford it, even though it was his idea and he also works full time so I’m not sure how he somehow couldn’t budget, but we cancelled it anyway. He sent me long messages saying how sorry he was and how bad he felt that I wasn’t going anymore because of him and I kept telling him it was fine, because I genuinely didn’t really give a shit and was kind of relieved because I was slightly dreading it. Our situations are quite different in that my parents were paying for mine whereas he was paying his out of pocket from working full time.

I heard nothing from him for about 2 or 3 months and I didn’t contact him so I assumed he was over it and would drop it. But then I received a text from him out of nowhere saying that he still feels bad but he saw another hotel and looked at flights and could get time off work to go and he said that even this time that he could pay for mine as well as his and then I pay him back if I couldn’t afford it. So out of nowhere he has all this money that he somehow couldn’t accumulate earlier in the year.

My parents were willing to pay for me to go but I said no for multiple reasons, one being it was significantly cheaper than the one we were meant to go on, which is never a good sign because the cheaper accommodation is, the worse quality it is. I was already going on 3 other trips so it’s not like I was missing out on going anywhere, I didn’t particularly want to go with him anyway, and I just wanted him to stop bringing it up because if I don’t care he shouldn’t. I told him that it was a nice offer but no. He was annoyed because I was willing to go with him before but not now and he spent time looking for an alternative just for me to say no and now we aren’t going anywhere at all.

My parents felt it was a dick move for him to offer this to me and expect me to say yes and go with him after he bailed on one that we booked such a short time ago, and I agree with them because it makes it seem like he just didn’t like the price of the original one that we agreed, so he canceled and is now offering me a worse alternative.

Trip Report [PortAventura World] & [Ferrari Land]

On the first day we went to the park, we didn’t think to check how busy it was before purchasing unlimited express passes, and to our surprise the park was pretty dead and most wait times were not long, so the passes were kind of wasted, and I only rode most of the rides once so I didn’t really make use of unlimited. I did ride shambhala about 5 times within 30 minutes though so I at least used it for that.

After that waste, the next day we decided to instead buy passes for rides individually because it’s better value than paying for rides I won’t go on. Uncharted had a 1hr 15m wait which you couldn’t pay me to do because the ride lasts about 2 minutes, so we paid for the passes which is the most expensive (€24 each) in the park for some reason despite it not being the best ride. I then went on Hurakan Condor which is my second favourite and it was €19, the queue was around 40 minutes which again, I don’t want to wait that long for a ride that only lasts one minute. Then I went on shambhala which only had a 20m wait so I queued for that and then did it once again with a pass. The park was a lot busier compared to the day before.

I went to Ferrari land on this day as well, and went on Red force twice. First time was a short wait because I was near the first in line on opening and second time I used an express pass, which is a crazy price (€26) for a one minute ride. I had an opportunity to ride first row and for some reason passed and went to the second which I now regret after reading the front is a better experience. I couldn’t go on it more than twice though because I didn’t want a headache for the rest of the day.

I wasn’t intending to go to the park for another day but I decided to just a couple of hours before closing. I went straight to shambhala and the wait was 40 minutes which my mother said wouldn’t be bad so for some reason I joined the queue… which I very much regretted and by the time I got on I was deflated from waiting so long and didn’t even enjoy it much, and after we just left the park because I don’t think it’s worth waiting for anything that long for something which lasts such a short time.

Ratings

Shambhala - 9/10
Only queued for it once and went on it around 8 times. Pretty good coaster I like the feeling of lifting out of your seat.

Uncharted - 7/10
Pretty cool especially how it’s dark but the wait times are insane, I never saw it below one hour and the ride is super short. Out of everything this is the one I would especially not queue any longer than 10m for (which never happens because I have never seen it shorter than 40m)

Red force - 6/10
I like the acceleration at the start but other than that it’s not the most exciting thing. The drop in my opinion isn’t really scary enough, it’s a pretty short drop and there is not much to the coaster.

Water rides are meh, not bad but I only went on each once.

Furious Baco, Stampida, El Diablo - 1/10
Didn’t queue for any of these (thank god), super rough not really enjoyable at all, went on them once each and that was enough. Queue for Furious Baco was 1hr 45 at one point, which is insane especially for a very short ride that isn’t even enjoyable.

Dragon khan - 0/10
Didn’t go on it at all because I remember from the last times how rough it was

In summary, the only rides I went on more than once are Red Force (x2), Shambhala (x8), and Hurakan Condor (x2). The most enjoyable for me by far are Shambhala and HC and everything else I don’t particularly care for. I don’t know how anyone can visit without a pass of any kind because you will spend 90% of your day queuing for rides that aren’t even worth the wait and the experience won’t be very enjoyable. Any wait longer than 20min for me ruins the experience of the ride because you come out feeling stupid for waiting so long for something super short.

This was my 5th time visiting the park (from Canada) and probably my last because other than a few rides it’s pretty underwhelming for me at this point. I think it’s a lot better experience for kids

I have the profile curation thing on, but for the subs that I have selected to show some of the posts are hidden. For example I have the AirPods subreddit shown and some posts are there but this one and a few others aren’t. Same for other subs like r/10s, some posts show and others not. The posts aren’t removed or anything so I’m not sure why. On mobile and web I haven’t checked old Reddit

I was watching wu vs Allen earlier and I have never watched snooker before but I was following the live thread also , but I missed the end of it so I googled it to see who won and they are drawing 7-7 but it said the match is not over yet. Why do they play over multiple days instead of one

I like to walk a trail and and I saw a woman approaching with 2 dogs who were both running wild, and I assumed she would put a leash on them when she saw me but no. One of them ran right in front of me as I was walking and nearly tripped me up, and the other who was a decent size fully jumped up on me and gave me mudded paw prints on my pants. She was calling them but of course it didn’t listen and even as I was getting further away it was still running to me and running around me.

I understand that people like to let their dogs run around on a trail and I don’t have an issue with that, but if you have no control over your dog maybe put on a leash at least when you see people coming and don’t let it jump up on people.
